Unique data center experiments - insects as chicken food

02 October 2020, 09:14

The local press Norrmedia with the newspapers NSD and Kuriren wrote an article about us to tell more about what is hidden behind the RISE ICE data center. The article was largely about ICE and specifically about our worm culture in the heat box test bed.

The project is about growing mealworms in a heat box, which in the long run will become chicken food. The heat comes from the data center and it can become one economical and environmentally friendly way to recover heat in subarctic climates.

Chickens eat wheat, oats and then they get protein from soy concentrate. These insects will be the replacement for imported protein because Sweden's soy concentrate comes largely from Brazil, where you must be able to guarantee that you have not devoured the Amazon to grow. The question is also whether soy is enough for everyone who wants to raise animals?

The idea of the project is to benefit the climate by using heat from the cooling of the servers in the process instead of, for example, having a diesel generator. It can also be economically profitable in the industrial symbiosis when these different industries work together.
