Test bed for edge technology and 5G leads the development

A press release about edge and 5G is released today.

The collaboration between the research institute RISE and Luleå University of Technology has for the first time made it possible to carry out edge experiments in a real 5G network.

- Edge is the future. It is a key technology that will be the next big arena for digital innovation. Soon there will be an edge node in every street corner, says Tor Björn Minde from RISE.

The new generation mobile network 5G is being rolled out across the country. At the same time, edge technology is being developed for a variety of areas. Edge enables powerful data processing locally close to users. With the help of edge, the lower delay in 5G communication can be used for applications. In practice, this means better and the opportunity for faster decisions and that calculations are moved closer to the users from cloud data centers that can be far away.

- The combination of edge in 5G networks will be of great importance for the future of Swedish industry. In our test bed, we can now develop and test applications that were not previously possible. These include delay-sensitive real-time services, technology that will change industries such as transport, vehicles and tourism, says Tor Björn Minde from RISE.

Tor Björn Minde is unit manager at RISE and responsible for the test bed. He is on the top 30 list of leading global thought leaders in the field. According to Tor Björn, the possibility of edge calculations that the test bed provides is a very big advance.

The test bed environment is built by RISE, is supplier neutral and uses open source code, which makes developers free to develop themselves without being locked into a supplier. The goal is to strengthen the national capacity for innovation by making edge calculations available for additional 5G test beds and digital innovation laboratories across the country.

- With the test bed, we can give Swedish ICT companies a unique advantage. We currently have three projects using 5G running on the test bed and would like to welcome more developers who want to test new innovative concepts and services in a real environment, says Emil Svanberg from RISE, project manager for the test bed within edge.
