High-level virtual visit to RISE Wedistrict demonstrator

The Wedistrict demonstrator, that is described in the video, shows a combination of a liquid cooled datacenter and fuel cells for improved heat recovery.
We welcome you all to this high-level virtual visit of the Luleå demonstrator as part of the Wedistrict project (https://wedistrict.eu). The proof-of-concept demonstrator has been decommissioned as of the end of June 2023, but we have collected vast amounts of data in operating the demonstrator. Although parts of the setup were running as early as April 2022, the heat recovery to the facility was not finalized and monitored until early January 2023.
The two containers were connected grid parallel, but the idea is that the fuel cells produce electricity from biogas and this powers an immersion tank with 22kW peak of open compute servers that are fully submerged in a dielectric coolant and the heat from the lower container pre-heats the air to the fuel cells where the fuel cells are also connected to the building heating network.
Our data collection system has full datasets for all monitoring points from 11th January 2023 to the 16th June 2023 inclusive.
During this period the demonstrator consumed 72 MWh of biogas (thanks Polargas) and from this the fuel cells generated 39.2 MWh of electricity making the fuel cell system 54.4% electrically efficient (well done to the fuel cell supplier Solydera). The IT (no fans present) consumed 41.9 MWh of electrical energy with the data center container (with a small heat pump, a dry cooler, 3 pumps, a fire suppression, lighting, but no UPS) consumed 0.84 MWh giving an interim Power Usage Effectiveness (iPUE, not PUE and definitely not the ISO PUE - you know why!), but as per the ISO 30134-2 an iPUE of 1.02 - just in case your were wondering.
We are now analyzing the full thermal data and will update you on this very soon.
