An Italian outlook – Data Center Nation Italy – 31 of May 2023

Milan, the centre of fashion and art in Italy, has starting to become a centre for data centres. The Data Center Nation Italy 2022 in Milan was the biggest data centre conference in Italy ever, and the 2023 DCN conference were almost twice as big with over 1300 participants.
As the energy crisis hits Europe with lack of energy, but also space, the data centre developers are starting to look outside FLAP (Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris) for their developments. And since Italy is the 8th greats economies in the world, it is seen as a great location. The Italian Trade Agency are welcoming these types of investments as they see the data centre industry taking a bigger role in the Italian economy in the future.
According to all speakers at the conference, RISE included, sustainability is the main focus in the coming years. All hyperscalers have serios plans of becoming carbon neutral in a relatively short time span. One challenge is of course securing green prime power, but also decarbonising the back-up systems. Both fuel cells, micro grid and re use of access heat was mentioned as possible keys to the puzzle of decarbonising the data centre industry.
RISE was invited by Deerns to talk about the E2P2-project where we are going to build a proof of concept with fuel cells and natural gas as the prime power source for a data centre just outside Milan. Moving from an unstable electric grid with a high carbon footprint to the gas grid with natural gas is the first step towards sustainability. In Italy the carbon footprint from natural gas is lower compared to electricity. The next step in the green transformation is to move to green hydrogen.
