Can supercomputing be sustainable? - Energy efficiency and material sustainability in HPC

05 June 2024, 14:54

Panel at ISC24, International Super Computing 2024, May 15 with Tor Björn Minde and Jon Summers as moderator and panelist. The other panelists were Dieter Kranzlmüller, Chairman of the Board of Directors Leibniz Rechenzentrum der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Germany, Satoshi Matsuoka Director Riken R-CCS, Japan and Bronis de Supinski, CTO for LCLawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

With the advent of increased need for supercomputing in CPU and GPU infrastructures can we stay on a sustainable development curve? Some predict the energy used in super compute infrastructures will go through the roof. Some argue aginst it and add the benefits for society. We talk about exascale and at the same time net-zero carbon footprint. Is that possible? How do we develop the field in a sustainable way? What is sustainability for a computer systems? Do we need to consider a broader scope of environmental impacts across the life cycle of the infrastructure? What materials go into our systems. For how long do we operate them? Can we attack the energy use on all levels from model and algorithms to cooling and power?
