Peter Judge, the executive editor at DatacenterDynamics, writes that we have all the proof we need that liquid cooling has arrived. He is willing to place a small bet that sometime next year or the year after DCD Academy will invite to a course in data center plumbing.
He writes that we have long heard that air cooling can no longer meet all the cooling demands of today and tomorrow, but now the evidence is there. He then says that anyone in any doubt should check a joint presentation from this week's DCD>Connect by Jon Summers and Tor Björn Minde of RISE. It's a half-hour physics workout that demonstrates that the thermal resistance of air cooling is too high to cool the GPU systems needed for AI systems like GPT-4.

The presentation at DCD has brought a lot of attention. It was recorded and the slides have travelled on seven seas.
We presented that we have entered a new era of AI, and the training and usage of generative AI requires large data centers and edge nodes, and clearly has significant associated energy costs. We have done the calculations.
Change is ahead with computational requirements demanding new efficient and complex GPU/accelerator hardware with ever increasing heat fluxes. Thermal management requirements will challenge the fluid medium of thin air and enforce data centers to employ liquid cooling close to the microelectronics.
So how will all of this pan out?
Through project examples we addressed the questions and challenges that arise from the new era that is now upon us. The future heat fluxes that are expected were described. Immersed cooling, direct-to-chip or any derivative of liquid cooling where compared. We also talked about how large the impact will be will be on energy costs and the industry's drive for sustainability. It was presented how these developments act as a strong technical driver for change in data center design.
