Sustainable data processing - How to make your data operations green

During the Dataweek, June 1st, BDVA organised a session on Green data processing. The speakers and panelists were Chris Adams, The Green Web Foundation, Nick Morris, Carbon 3IT and Max Schulze, Founder at Sustainable Digital Infrastructure Alliance. The session was led by Tor Björn Minde, Director RISE ICE Datacenter. See the video from the session below.
Data Week is the spring gathering of the European Big Data and Data Driven AI research and innovation communities. In Data Week, the participants share knowledge and results, discuss topics of common interest, find synergies, build new collaborations and identify new challenges and recommendations. Data Week also links the communities and their results to the European policies and market needs and brings European initiatives and activities closer to local communities.
The session content:
The growth of data processing due to the digital transformation of society results in a growing use of energy and load on the environment. The data need to be stored and processed in datacenters. The number of servers is increasing and so do the power demand to operate them. The software for the applications is based on more or less efficient code, programming languages and compilers. The performance of servers differs with some being more energy efficient. The datacenter envelope consists of power distribution and thermal management (cooling) to power servers and remove heat produced in operation. It is an overhead energy cost of 10-20% or more to the energy used by the servers running the data processing. The residual heat is mostly wasted and the efficiency of the cooling depends on technique chosen. All these areas need to be carefully optimized to minimize the environmental impact from the ground to the cloud. The session addressed what and how that can be done to improve energy efficiency for software, IT-servers, cooling, heat re-use.
