TechSweden visit sustainability RISe ICE Data center

TechSverige with members have visited ICE Datacenter

30 November 2023, 09:18

Written by Frida Faxborn, TechSverige, translated and republished here.

In the two days, a delegation consisting of TechSverige's member companies Atea Sweden, Advania Sweden, Sweco, Sharp Business Systems Sweden, Inrego and CGI was fed full of exciting information and knowledge about the latest in Swedish data center development, where Sweden is at the top of the world! 🙌🏻

In Luleå, on RISE Research Institutes of Sweden's approx. 1,000 m2 area, research is underway on, among other things, different cooling methods and how hardware can be designed to reduce energy consumption for cooling. There are great advantages to locating data centers in Norrland, where the weather can be used for cooling together with Swedish fossil-free energy - instead of in countries with mainly energy from coal power.

In Boden at Boden Business Park, we got to see how the municipality is actively working with social transformation with the circularity and sustainability perspective constantly present in urban planning. Projects are underway there to see how waste heat from data centers combined with AI from a range of different information sources in a closed greenhouse can be used for maximum effect and cultivation results. It may not sound so difficult, but there is an awful lot to take into account (including the fact that plants sleep and want to wake up in the best possible way). 🍅🥒🥭 Soon the waste heat will also be used for breeding insects that can become protein for fish farms in the municipality. 🌱🐟

Data centers are an absolutely fundamental part of our social infrastructure and must be handled and understood by politicians and decision-makers in just that way❗️However, knowledge of its importance, both for our welfare society, for access to community services and services and our sustainable development with reduced climate impact is still low . Without data centers as tools for data management, large parts of the world come to a standstill. You and I expect it to work.

The days have led to lots of new knowledge and discussions where both the geeks and generalists in the group took home a lot to both spread further and think about based on their own business.

Many thanks to everyone involved in Luleå and Boden, but not least to Isabelle Kemlin who was responsible for planning and implementation and to Mattias Vesterlund and Jonas Gustafsson who took the time to receive us! 🙏🏻 Now you on hashtag #Rise, and we as a nation, need to get better at bragging about all this fantastic research being conducted for the development of data centers and thus our common sustainable future! 👍🏻🤩🙌🏻
