How will 5G/6G impact the datacenter industry?

08 October 2021, 09:57

Tor Björn Minde held a keynote about 5G/6G impact on the datacenter industry at the Datacenter & Colocation Day 2021 in Würzburg organized by Vogel-IT.

He first described the 5G and 6G developments and the requirements on the networks to be called either of the two generations. It is a dramatic increase in number of connected devices, bandwidth and data volumes but the most dramatic change of exponential type is the lower latency. The round trip delay in the mobile network will be down below 5 ms and lower. It is an exponential change.

This makes it worthwhile putting compute (edge) close to the base station and deep into the mobile network. Then the ping time between the device and the edge will be lower than the ping time between the edge nodes and the central Internet datacenters. It will enable a completely new set of applications not seen or experienced before.

The compute and battery limited devices can be off-loaded to the network edge or local content and compute can be moved closer to the end-user devices. Suddenly new XR, gaming, ML inference or control applications will be possible. Augumented reality applications will be useful and have low response times for enhanced user experience. Demanding compute algorithms that are not possible in devices for example navigation and control applications will then be enabled.

All this will enable a new breed of small datacenters all the way from 5-10 kW size small nodes, to 20-50 kW containers to 200-500 kW buildings. The number of small datacenters will in cities be tenfold. Industry sites and plants will have single access mobile networks with a number of edge nodes for low latency industry applications and it will happen first.
