Greenhouses can be heated by waste heat from data centres

ICE Datacenter at RISE has been researching for several years how to use waste heat from data centres to heat greenhouses - now this technology will be used in a large data centre to be built in Östersund.
- RISE is working with EcoDatacenter on several projects, such as frequency services for the electricity grid and recycling and reuse of IT hardware. Their solution with data centre heat to a greenhouse for local green plants is completely in line with the development we are driving in ICE data centres. We hope we have inspired them," says Tor Björn Minde, RISE.
It is when data centres take in electricity to make data calculations and the electricity is converted, that excess heat is generated. One researcher on the reuse of energy from data centres is Mattias Vesterlund at ICE Datacenter in Luleå.
"Connecting data centres and greenhouses for heating is a good application. There is enormous potential in such an endeavour; we have seen that the heat generated in Norrbotten and Västerbotten alone would be enough for almost sixty times Sweden's need for vegetables. We at RISE are world leaders in our research," says Mattias.
