Hydrogen and liquid cooling the future in data centers

Hydrogen as power source and liquid cooling instead of air cooling. These are two trends that may become increasingly common in the data center area to generate increased efficiency and sustainability. That's what Tor Björn Minde, unit manager for ICE Datacenter at Rise, thinks.

Instead of using the electricity grid as a power source for your data center, hydrogen gas, or another gas, can be an alternative. Hydrogen can be used both as a backup solution and as a primary power source. Currently, it is instead common to use diesel generators as a backup solution in case the electricity grid disappears, but there are certain disadvantages to that, Tor Björn Minde says.
- Hydrogen and biogas are more sustainable solutions than diesel. Gas is not emission-free either, but the climate burden is among the lowest that can be achieved.
The next trend is liquid cooling. At the end of 2022, Meta told us that all the company's data center facilities will be cooled with liquid in 2030. Initially, it will mainly be about AI workloads being cooled in liquid, but in the long term, the plan is for liquid cooling to replace air cooling. This can lead to a transformation in the market.
- Meta's claim can absolutely accelerate development. If there is money in a system, it develops faster, now more companies need to develop solutions to be able to deliver on Meta's level.
