RISE hosted one of the sessions of the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW25).

RISE Research Institutes of Sweden hosted one of the most well-attended sessions on Day 2 of the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW).
In the panel we had Robert Nuij from the European Commission, Vincent Jacamon from the International Energy Agency (IEA), Niamh Gallagher from Amazon Web Services (AWS), Anastasia Tsougka from ECOS and Emma Hellström from WWF Sweden Youth. From RISE Tor Björn Minde was in the panel and Isabelle Kemlin was the moderator.
The discussion focused on the energy impact of AI and how to manage it responsibly. Key points included:
• AI-related server infrastructure will increase its energy use, and could account for 4% of global electricity use by 2030
• Monitoring energy use through the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) is essential, but must also support European competitiveness
• The increase in energy to accelerators (read GPUs) post a challenge to the technology development and need attention
• The European tech industry has an opportunity to step up, if supported by the Commission.
• AI Gigafactories will play an important role for future competitiveness
