The growth of data processing due to the digital transformation of society results in a growing use of energy and load on the environment. The data need to be stored and processed in datacenters. The number of servers is increasing and so do the power demand to operate them. The software for the applications is based on more or less efficient code, programming languages and compilers. The performance of servers differs with some being more energy efficient.
The datacenter envelope consists of power distribution and thermal management (cooling) to power servers and remove heat produced in operation. It is an overhead energy cost of 10-20% or more to the energy used by the servers running the data processing. The residual heat is mostly wasted and the efficiency of the cooling depends on technique chosen. All these areas need to be carefully optimized to minimize the environmental impact from the ground to the cloud.
The session will address what and how can that be done to improve energy efficiency for software, IT-servers, cooling, heat re-use.
