Gothenburg Green City Zone leads the way towards zero-emissions transports

Gothenburg Green City Zone
Gothenburg Green City Zone

Currently in development, Gothenburg Green City Zone is a world first: an initiative by a number of major stakeholders including Volvo Cars to build a climate-neutral transportation system in a large geographical area of Gothenburg. New technology will be tested to allow this part of Gothenburg to have 100% emission-free transport modes by 2030

The initiative was taken jointly by the City of Gothenburg (through Business Region Göteborg), Volvo Cars, and RISE Research Institutes of Sweden. Interest and involvement in Gothenburg Green City Zone has been great, with Chalmers University of Technology, the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg, the Swedish Exhibition and Congress Centre, the City of Mölndal and Johanneberg Science Park on board so far. And there will be many more of us – Gothenburg Green City Zone is an inclusive venture that welcomes everyone who wants to take part, in whatever way, in creating sustainable solutions for the Gothenburg region, and in spreading them to the wider world.

The purpose with this initiative is to create new ways of collaborating in order to develop transport solutions that can contribute to a climate neutral transport zone. The final target is a climate neutral transport system in the city by 2030.

The number of residents, workplaces, tourists and visitors in Gothenburg is set to increase dramatically the coming 10 years. This fact makes it a challenge to create an efficient, climate neutral transport system that works for all.

The new solutions will be developed by engaging partners in the city municipality, industry, research institutes, Universities and not the least, citizens. The final goal is a climate-neutral transport system that improves the health and well-being of all citizens -a Green city zone.

Analysis on changes, interaction Human - Technology - Organization

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Analysis of changes, interaction Human - Technology - Organization Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

In industry and in other operations, progress is rapid and changes are constantly ongoing. In a workplace, human, technology and organization interact. This interaction creates the work environment and needs to be taken into account in the event of changes.

Purpose/Benefit:

In order to handle change processes from a holistic perspective where humans, technology and organization (HTO) are included, a systematic approach to analysis, evaluation, solution and actions is required. What can be seen as beneficial from an efficiency or operational perspective can become inefficient and unprofitable in the long term if employees risk their health. Often, risks arise in the interaction between humans, technology and organization. By broadening the perspective on change, one avoids getting caught up in only a single cause or solution to the consequences, risks and problems that may arise.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

According to the regulations on “Systematic work environment work” (AFS 2001: 1), an impact assessment with risk assessment is required for all types of changes in the business that may affect the work environment. We offer an approach in four stages to work from an HTO perspective on planned changes in operations. The approach is based on various research and development projects and experiences. The method includes a description of important work environment factors to take into account at the task and work content level as well as overall working conditions.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

We offer workshops with mapping, analysis and guidance from an HTO perspective in your business. Content and scope are based on your needs.

Follow-up and support for Vinnova's program Universal design

Collaboration support Universal design

RISE has been given the task to follow up on Vinnova's program focused on universal design (a governmental assignment from 2017-2020). The aim of the program has been to ensure that organisational development, environments and services are universally designed, so that they become accessible and useful to all people no matter social affiliation.

Universal Design

Universal design ensures that the development of, for example, activities, environments and services, are designed for human diversity and everyone's participation.

Working with universal design strengthens the conditions for a society that is as accessible as possible for everyone, regardless of functional ability, age, gender, ethnicity or other social affiliation.

Vinnova has financed about 30 projects between 2017-2020 within the program initiative Universal design/Accessibility design, of which 20 are in progress and 13 are completed. To understand in what way the projects have contributed to the purpose of the investment and whether the projects have the potential to contribute to a positive impact at a systematic level, an initial follow-up of the program is needed. Previous experience of norm-changing projects, such as projects concerning cities' ability to innovate and adapt, shows that it is also positive to support collaboration and coordination between projects while they are ongoing.

Purpose and goals

The overall purpose of the assignment is to follow up Vinnova's government assignment on universal design / accessibility design for 2017-2020 and to produce a basis for Vinnova's feedback. The goal of the follow-up is that opportunities, obstacles and challenges are made visible and highlighted regionally and nationally and form the basis for policy changes and implementation. The assignment also intends to support the assignment and its projects in general in terms of collaboration both within the projects and between the projects. The collaboration support shall contribute to utilization, dissemination, exchange of experience and learning, as well as innovation-promoting initiatives.

The follow up thus stands on two legs

1. Provide documentation that describes, synthesizes and summarizes knowledge and lessons learned from the projects within the program.

2. Collaborative support that promotes learning and innovation ability but also enhances opportunities, obstacles and challenges visible in the work with universal design from a larger system perspective.

In conclusion, the follow-up will highlight both obstacles and opportunities for universal design, which will act as support for increased accessibility in cities 'and communities', activities, environments and services. Part of the goal is that knowledge and use of universal design as a strategic tool for socially sustainable community building in Swedish planning practice has increased.

3. Good health and well-being
5. Gender equality

11. Sustainable cities and communities

Transformation Partnership

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Transformation Partnership Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Transformation Partnerships, where RISE curates the synergic work of complex constellations of partners, gathered around a societal challenge, aimed at engaging in Transforming Practices to enable systemic change.

Purpose/Benefit:

Introduction to the Service

Nowadays, we observe a shift in the way the work of most companies and institutions is carried out. This shift is happening, due, for instance, to the digital transformation or the proliferation of AI, where relationships and agendas are becoming more and more interconnected and therefore complex. Actors that could work independently only a few years ago, today feel the need to connect and collaborate. Different agendas have to relate: social, economic, political agendas, as well as the civil society’s agenda; all of them have to also connect to the higher goal of environmental sustainability.

If we think about urban planning, for instance, and the possibility of having sensing and acting cities (so called smart cities), we immediately see how it is now necessary that all actors involved in this system are not working separately, but collaborate to produce transformations where all points of view are taken into account.

We are at the presence of systemic challenges that need to be acted upon with an approach that leads to Systemic Change.

This is a relatively new way of working and all sectors are dedicated to increasing and boosting the innovation and transformation capacities, related to Systemic Change.

At RISE, systemic transformation is in our DNA, being the Swedish multidisciplinary research institute with the governmental mandate of catalyzing collaborations. We have matured methodologies and tools that effectively contribute to increase capacities of Systemic Change through Transformation Partnerships.

Purpose

A transformation partnership is built upon design principles that stimulate new ways of thinking, acting, collaborating, planning and implementing transformations.

It is meant both for the challenges that our partners face within their organisation or in their external activities, in particular in multi-stakeholders situations.

The mentoring supports the opening up of the challenge in a holistic way, by taking into account the broader societal context, and it provides ways to map and collaboratively make sense of it.

Transformation Partnerships offers tools and methods to:

  • navigate complex challenges;
  • define the foundational values that will drive the transformation;
  • support and boost multi-stakeholder collaboration across organisations;
  • go forward with a shared value-based vision and concrete action plans to implement a roadmap for systemic change.

Benefits

In a Transformation Partnership, RISE will coach and support you in a specific transformation process, you will acquire methods and tools that will empower you towards:

  1. Be(coming) Change: learning to have the right mindset towards change, which implies attitudes like staying curious and embracing risk and complexity; being able to unpack end expand on the values that the transformation will empower.
  2. Work Change: making sense of your challenge, understanding each other in the stakeholder constellation that is operating the transformation; exploring the challenge from different perspectives (micro, meso, macro, chrono); creating future scenarios, through exploring experiential proposals; being able to regularly reflect and assess the process and implement the findings in the following iterations.
  3. Realise Change: creating concrete action plans to kickstart change/innovation/new pilot.

Thanks to the iterative and explorative characteristics of the tools used, you will be at ease in  exploring unknown territories, move beyond the standard, and truly touch upon new perspectives that can be used when a durable transformation is necessary.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The tools and methods that are offered through the transformation partnerships, have been developed at RISE, in close collaboration with Eindhoven University of Technology. They are a result of a year long applied research in Transforming Practices and Systemic Change. They capitalise on dozens of applications’ experiences across a broad number of sectors. They are grounded on design research and they promote a prototype-driven approach.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Depending on the partners’ requests and operating context, Transformation Partnerships consist out of a specifically designed set-up of workshops. During these sessions, mentors from RISE curate the process and coach the group of people through it.

The workshops are designed upon request, to fit the purpose and the motivation of your  organisation. Depending on the chosen duration of the collaboration, the process can result in a final report, specifying an action plan; it can have a follow-up to discuss the finding, reflect and assess the process.

A possible longer collaboration with RISE can also be a result of this service.

Digiphysical care contacts increased the security of people in nursing

Digiphysical care - Civic Tech

Division: Division Digital Systems and Societal Transformation

Sweden's health care is facing major challenges. Demographics with an aging population, difficulties with the provision of skills and the conversion to digital systems provide opportunities, but also place great demands on management, routines and collaboration.

People living in nursing homes are usually elderly and multi-ill with great physical or cognitive difficulties to cope with their own housing and need continuous help and support. For these people, physician continuity is an important part of the treatment, which is unfortunately lacking in many rural communities.

With the project, we wanted to create security for citizens who live in nursing homes and their relatives in the Västerbotten Region's area of southern Lapland. This group is severely affected by not having a continuity in doctor contacts, which is because they are forced to use reluctant doctors in the area to deal with the shortage of doctors.

The project seeked to address the challenge and increase the confidence of these citizens in care and care through the combination of digital and physical care services.

Project partners in addition to RISE were Glesbygdsmedicinskt Centrum, Region Västerbotten, Malå municipality, KRY and the Civic Tech platform.

Vinnova's Civic tech program: Digital services for increased trust between citizens and the public sector fund this project.
