Community actors in Sweden have gathered to take a joint stand against the vibrational injury. Vibration injuries involve great personal suffering and significant costs for society and companies when the victims have to be relocated or on sick leave.

The project was based on the work and results achieved within the UDI projects Zero Vibration Injuries steps 1-3 during the period 2014 - 2020, see below under Related. The purpose was to further develop the solutions and results from the previous projects to drive the work further towards the vision "Zero vibration injury". In this project, we continued to work on moving from prototype production of machines to business operations of commercial players, which is required for the machines to be available to end users.

The goal was to scale up to system solutions for vibration reduction for machine groups and create conditions for business operations so that low-vibration machines reach the market.

The work was conducted in real industrial environments with participating parties representing the automotive, construction, stone and dental sectors. Both machine users, as well as machine rental companies and machine manufacturers were involved in the project.

Sun for everyone – solar from a gender and service design perspective

Sun for everyone
Woman with solar panels on her home

The solar industry is growing, but so far it is mainly men with an interest and knowledge in technology who buy solar panels. Why is this the case and how can more customer groups be involved? We use norm-critical analysis and service design to understand how norms connected to gender, technology, and market affect the solar industry today.

The UN SDG 5 is about gender equality, stating that "Gender equality is achieved when women, men, girls and boys have equal rights, conditions and opportunities, and the power to shape their own lives and contribute to the development of society. It is a matter of equitable distribution of power, influence and resources in society." (UN, 2015). One sub-goal is to use technology to empower women. Goal 7 points to the need for sustainable energy for all.

Despite a strong development of the solar industry in Sweden – which is of course positive in the pursuit of a renewable energy system – the solar industry (as well as the energy industry in general) is still heavily male-dominated in both development and installation, as well as among customers (IEA, 2020).

In this project, we look at how to increase the long-term social sustainability of solar energy and broaden the solar power deployment in Sweden by increasing the proportion of female house owners who invest in solar power. More customer groups need to be included in the long term to reach the goal of 100% renewable electricity production in Sweden by 2040 and to make more people feel involved in the energy transition that is now underway. This applies to many different groups in society, but in our project we have chosen to focus on women who live in private houses without solar power installed today. Our starting point is: what would solar products and services look like if they were designed based on the needs and desires of female homeowners?

We use methods from service design and norm creative innovation to identify current norms around technology, gender and market, and to identify opportunities for the solar industry to better reach out to and support women solar customers. To find out what the solar industry looks like today and what norms the industry consciously or unconsciously adheres to, we conduct interviews with companies and organizations in the solar industry and related industries. In spring 2021, we interviewed a total of 10 female and male participants, representing the full range from one-man businesses to global corporations.

The project also uses focus groups with women from our target group to find out their needs and thoughts on solar power. The results of both interviews and focus groups form the basis for further development of so-called customer journeys that show both weak points and opportunities in the "journey" from interest to installed solar panels.

The results of the project will include customer journeys with design concepts for products and/or services that put the target group in focus. We will also develop a digital material that can be easily disseminated within the solar industry. The project is primarily aimed at the various actors in the solar industry, with the aim of increasing the industry's ability to reach out to women solar customers. As in previous, similar projects (we are inspired for example by the YCC concept car by Volvo Cars), starting from the needs and requirements of a specific target group can result in innovative solutions that in practice not only benefit the specific target group but also a broader group of people.

Co-funders in the project are Trä- och Möbelföretagen (TMF), Solcellskollen, WSP, Derome Hus, IBC SOLAR, and Innovatum. In addition to these actors, four additional companies have contributed with their time by participating in an interview and workshop for the project.

Digital activity catalog for Västra Götalandsregionen

Digital aktivity catalog

People spend to little time on phyical activity despite the fact that society has knowledge about the health risks and increased costs it entails. Research shows a positive relationship between regular physical activity and major health benefits. More physical activity positively affects brain functions such as memory and concentration, protects against depression and dementia. Furthermore, the risk of many of our most common diseases such as high blood pressure, angina, heart attack, stroke, type 2 diabetes, obesity, colon and breast cancer but also falls and fractures is reduced. We must also not forget how important it is to counteract long periods of sedentary life, as it is in itself a risk factor for ill health even among people who are otherwise physically active. But despite the fact that many of us have this knowledge, it is challenging to get more people physically active today. There can be many obstacles to this such as, low level of knowledge, poorer socio-economic conditions, lower level of education and income, language barriers, low motivation and strong behavioral patterns that need to change, among other things.

The main goal of this project is to produce a regionally web-based activity catalog that is user-friendly and accessible, with the aim of making it easier for the residents of Västra Götaland to find activities based on the individual's interest with input from various actors; public, private, non-profit and on their own. The catalog must be easy accessible and attractive to everyone, with a special focus on children and young people, foreign background, various disabilities and people who are otherwise unaccustomed to searching on the internet. Additional target groups to consider are; people who in their profession work with peoples lifestyles and guide their patients / clients / students / participants / visitors on to different kinds of physical activity, and also the organizations that are responsible for all the activities in the region.

Furthermore, the project investigates how this digital catalog can have measurable effects in the longer term in terms of increased activity and better health for the residents of the Västra Götaland region in all 49 municipalities. One of the assumptions is that the catalog alone is not enough if you want to reach those who have the worst conditions today to increase their level of physical activity. To succeed, the catalog needs to be supplemented. There are a number of ongoing services in the Västra Götaland region that it can be linked to already today, eg health coaches, healthcare, occupational therapists, school health, health pilots, lifestyle clinics, among others. By ensuring the use of the catalog in many different contexts, there can also be good chances that it will be spread among the inhabitants.

Energy communities are considered as enabler and essential element of a sustainable and efficient energy system. To study the possibilities of local energy communities from an European context, the CLUE project was created and financed by the EU program ERA-Net Smart Energy Systems. Together with 24 partners from 4 European countries, RISE works to analyze and study local electricity systems and communities based on various aspects.

The Swedish cell of the project focuses on how the transmission capacity limits to Malmö can be mitigated with the help of demand-side flexibility. Together with the city of Malmö, E.ON, Lund University, Parkering Malmö, Vasakronan and Serneke, studies and demonstrations are carried out to investigate which flexibility potentials exist and how they can be realised. The interaction between DSO, electricity producers, property owners and service providers is of great importance here.

RISE's role in the project is to estimate the flexibility potentials at aggregate levels, and analyze different instruments that can be used to realize these potentials such as flexibility markets or dynamic tariffs. In addition, RISE leads a work package in the international project that focuses on the upscaling and replication of the various solutions that have been developed and demonstrated in Austria, Sweden, Germany and Scotland.

Norm-creative Crisis Preparedness

Norm-creative Crisis Preparedness

“Norm-creative Crisis Preparedness” is a research project aiming to explore and co-design communication strategies and methods for supporting crisis preparedness and responses before and during times of crisis. The focus is on marginalized groups and disabilities not included in the normative assumptions of general crisis communication.

RISE is project coordinator
Active
Digitalisation
Västra Götaland Region
2 year project

Division: Division Digital Systems and Societal Transformation

During times of crisis daily needs may become challenges, social functions and infrastructures can cease to operate, and everyday relations and communications are likely to be disrupted. This makes responding to a crisis challenging.

Before the Covid-19 outbreak, a study by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) reported that almost half of the Swedish population have not made any preparations to cope with crisis situations such as e.g. long-term power failures (MSB, 2015). Previous research shows that crisis preparedness and estimation of ability to respond varies greatly across genders, but also that crisis situations both challenge and strengthen normative gender roles (MSB1204, MSB834).

Against this backdrop, a pilot project was initiated in the autumn of 2019. The aim was to develop methods for promoting dialogue between municipalities, civil society organisations and citizens about their information needs and access in a crisis situation, in this case a power failure. The project resulted in a collaborative scenario-based method that was co-designed with a civil society organisation, a municipality and citizens, aiming to:

  • promote a dialogue between municipalities, civil society organisations and citizens about information needs and access during power outage,
  • increase awareness of where further dialogue is needed and where capabilities in terms of accessing and using information already exist,
  • map citizens’ local, and social networks, and key information access nodes.

The pilot project was conducted before the Covid-19 outbreak. Now, instead of preparing for a potential crisis situation, people need to learn how to live in a crisis and respond to it. To adapt to this new reality, the project will hereafter focus on exploring and developing methods for supporting crisis preparedness and responses before and during pandemics. This changes the point of departure for this project, and the setting of the collaborative scenario-based method that was developed for another type of crisis situation.

The method will thus be re-designed and adapted to this new situation. The expected result of the project is a method that creates conditions for people to get a personal, hands-on experience of what it might mean to be in a crisis. The outcome from using the method is an increased understanding of people’s crisis preparedness and a crisis plan based on the people’s individual needs, everyday lived experiences and life situations.

From a public authority’s point, besides having access to a crisis communication tool encouraging and guiding people in developing a crisis plan, the objective is to gain an increased understanding of people’s subjective estimation of their crisis preparedness. Through the method certain patterns in terms of inequalities between gender, disabled and not disabled people, socio-economic classes, ages or ethnic backgrounds might become evident and highlighted.

Project manager Ingela Ernestam, responsible for Health and Care at Alfred Nobel Science Park, will together with Mona Jonsson, e-health strategist and Håkan Cavenius, researcher, at RISE conduct a feasibility study to identify the need for a service that ensures high quality tests in the project VisaTestNytta.

- First, we will carry out an updated analysis of the surrounding world to establish what tools and methods are available nationally today to evaluate tests. Then we intend to make a needs analysis of actors who carry out tests of welfare technology, says Ingela Ernestam.

She believes that it is important to take into account several parameters in order to evaluate the benefits of welfare technology - that not everything can be measured from an economic perspective. For example, there may be technical devices that do not save money for a municipality, but which create other values such as staff and residents becoming less stressed.

Many organizations

The aim of the feasibility study is to present a needs- and market research and proposals for a service to ensure qualitative tests of welfare technology for national actors who may be interested in owning, managing and developing such a service. If there is interest, the goal is then to develop a service with several benefits together with the organization:

  • To ensure that all conditions are in place to conduct tests of welfare technology
  • To provide tools and methods for conducting high quality tests
  • To provide research-based tools and methods for evaluating the tests - both qualitatively and quantitatively
  • Reporting system that with the help of visualization delivers a clear result and recommendation on whether the organization should proceed after the test, for example by introducing some type of welfare technology within a municipality

The VisaTestNytta project runs until the end of June 2021 and is financed with half a million kronor from the innovation authority Vinnova. In addition to Alfred Nobel Science Park and RISE, a reference group with participants from Örebro University and Örebro Municipality is participating.
