Logistics and smart transport for resilient supply chains

Submitted by MariaM-admin on

Global supply chains are subject to constant disruptions that spread through transport networks. These delays incur costs, a lack of transparency hinders decision-making and traditional logistics systems are struggling to cope with the transition to fossil-free transport. In cities, construction transport causes emissions and traffic congestion. To manage uncertainty, optimise resources and make quick decisions based on real-time data, companies and transport operators need smarter solutions.

RISE develops methods and solutions that make logistics and transport more efficient, sustainable, and robust. Digital tools that promote transparency and facilitate data sharing provide transport operators with real-time insights and advance notice of disruptions in multimodal supply chains. RISE supports ports and transport operators in making strategic and operational decisions through traffic forecasting, process analysis and digital twins to improve planning. Demonstration platforms collect and analyse data from various transport system sources to evaluate digital innovations and concepts. RISE tests and certifies transport packaging for dangerous goods in accordance with international regulations, while also developing more efficient transport solutions for cities that reduce the number of vehicles and emissions. Research into just-in-demand logistics and additive manufacturing demonstrates how production can be relocated closer to customers. Meanwhile, the development of logistics systems for carbon dioxide capture supports the process industry's transition to a lower-carbon economy.

LÖST: Lessons from Maritime Total Defence Exercises DSM 2025

LÖST
Cover of the report Lessons from Maritime Total Defence Exercises (LÖST).

How well does the shipping sector function during heightened preparedness? The LÖST project analysed lessons learned from Total Defence Exercise DSM 2025, where industry, government and military stakeholders tested critical transport functions.

The LÖST project documented and analysed the practical sub-exercises conducted as part of Total Defence Exercise DSM 2025. Through onboard and simulator observations, interviews and surveys, the project identified key lessons from the planning, execution and evaluation of the exercise.

The study found that the exercise strengthened cooperation between civilian and military stakeholders and improved understanding of roles, responsibilities and decision-making processes during heightened preparedness. The findings also highlight the importance of realistic scenarios, effective time management and structured debriefing in developing operational capability.

The project identified opportunities for improving future exercises, including greater realism, increased uncertainty within exercise scenarios, and a stronger focus on operational training for masters and bridge teams. The lessons learned can support the continued development of the shipping sector's total defence capabilities and provide guidance for other sectors planning similar preparedness exercises.

The project was carried out by RISE in collaboration with the University of Gothenburg and funded by Lighthouse.

Reuse of prefabricated concrete elements, logistics and business model

Reuse of prefabricated concrete elements

Prefabricated concrete elements, such as HDF boards, slab foundations, columns and sandwich walls, are common materials for frame structures in Sweden. Reuse of concrete frames is considered to have great potential, but is a major challenge in the market.

The project aims to develop a circular management of prefabricated concrete elements by creating a digital infrastructure for collecting data on reused elements from demolition projects. This includes linking demolition permit registers with business systems via digital product passports with IFC standards.

The project will also implement reuse inventory and quality assurance at retailers, and develop and validate various circular business models. Logistics solutions for transport, warehousing and resale will be validated, and reuse will be included in EPDs to create added value.

The project addresses challenges such as quality assurance, logistics and business models, and aims to establish circular flows in the construction industry. By focusing on the reuse of concrete elements, the project aims to reduce climate impact and create an integrated ecosystem for the built environment. The results will be disseminated through seminars, digital channels and publications, and the project is expected to contribute to increased access to quality-assured recycled concrete elements, reduced climate impact and changed business models.
