Calibration of sound calibrators

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Calibration of sound calibrators Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

RISE is calibrating all types of sound calibrators

Purpose/Benefit:

The national laboratories are responsible for maintaining the national reference standards for each measurement quantity and spreading metrological competence and traceability to industry and society at large. The national reference standards are the highest level of traceability in Sweden.

A calibration performed at a national laboratory fulfils all typical traceability and accreditation requirements that commonly exist in industry and society at large.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The characteristics of sound calibrators are specified in the international standard IEC 60942. Requirements and tolerances for sound pressure level, frequency, distortion and stability are among other things stated in this standard. The standard gives three classes of accuracy, LS, 1 and 2. Class LS is intended only for laboratory use while class 1 and 2 are intended for field use. These classes match the corresponding class for sound level meters.

RISE calibrates all types of sound calibrators. Parameters which are calibrated are sound pressure level, frequency and distortion. If the instrument is equipped with an accessory barometer, we check this as well at current air pressure

The recommended calibration interval is 1 year for sound calibrators.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The calibration results are reported in a digital calibration certificate in Swedish or English which states that the calibration was performed at a national laboratory.

Information security for safety-critical systems

IT security for safety-critical systems
IT security for safety-critical systems

As computer systems use information to control processes and decisions, integrity and availability of information is essential for proper function.

For computer systems that are safety-critical, such as machine control and automotive embedded systems, that shall comply with functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, functional safety must not be compromised when they become connected to external systems or the Internet. The challenge is to do an adequate trade-off between cost and protection. To obtain such a balance, a comprehensive risk analysis must be performed, followed by risk reduction activities and evaluation. To be fully protected against all types of attack vectors while still meeting availability requirements is often not possible. It is therefore important to choose security technologies that provide an acceptable residual risk, which requires a systematic security and safety approach.

Training

We have long experience of training within the Machinery Directive and functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, ISO 13849 and ISO 26262. We offer training in related computer security standards to provide a sufficient theoretical foundation for when safety-critical systems are to be connected to external systems.

Risk Analysis

We have extensive experience in doing risk analysis for functional safety as well as information security. Thus, we can assist, by using methods such as HARA/TARA, FTA/ATA and FMEA/FMEVA, in the identification of the risks that your system is facing in terms of reliability as well as information security.

Verification of architecture and security mechanisms

When the risk assessment is completed and the system architecture and security mechanisms chosen to manage the risks have been implemented, RISE can assist in the analysis of the architecture to provide an independent opinion on whether adequate security is obtained with the proposed architecture and the proposed security mechanisms. Further, we can help to validate the implemented security mechanisms by means of systematic analysis (e.g. code inspection, evaluation of circuit diagrams and test specifications).

Evaluation of software

Evaluation of software
Evaluation of software

Although safety-critical software is not affected by the environment in the same way as hardware, there is every reason to ensure its quality.

Modern systems for critical applications almost always include software as a part of their critical function.  As opposed to hardware, no new errors are introduced into the software after the system has been commissioned. Instead, errors may be introduced during the development stages.  It is therefore important that the software development process itself is well-proven, and that verification and validation is performed properly.

For safety-critical systems, where a loss of function could lead to catastrophic consequences, the software typically needs to be evaluated by an independent third party.

Evaluation of software includes checking that the software architecture is properly structured and modular, that a coding standard has been employed, and that probability checks have been applied to the input for functions.  In addition, it is common to perform data flow analyses and control flow analyses which can find, for example, inactive code, code which is never accessed, or variables that are written but never read.

Other reviews include more hardware-related aspects such as running regular memory tests and monitoring the program execution.
RISE has many years' experience of evaluation of safety-critical software, and can provide the following services in these fields:

  • Evaluation of software, e.g., in accordance with IEC 61508-03, ISO 13849, ISO 26262-6
  • Evaluation of the safety of software with respect to data flows and program execution
  • Quality control of software in connection with version management, documentation, development process etc.
  • Evaluation of software constructed from models and with automatic code generation, e.g., Matlab, Simulink, TargetLink, Rhapsody and SCADE
  • Evaluation of software in measuring instruments under the Measuring Instruments Directive for weighing instruments, energy meters, taximeters etc.

These methods are by no means exhaustive, but should be seen as a sample of what RISE can offer.

Calibration of electrical field probes/field indicators/field strength meters in the frequency range 10 kHz-18 GHz

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Calibration - Field measurement equipment Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Tracible calibration of electrical field probes/field indicators/ field strength meters in the frequency range 10 kHz-18 GHz

Purpose/Benefit:

To provide tracible calibration of electrical field probes/field indicators/field strength meters in the frequency range 10 kHz-18 GHz.

The calibration will provide a correction factor which can be used to improve the accuracy in the calibrated equipment.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The calibration of electrical field probes/field indicators/field strength meters takes place on one or both of our measurement ranges. For equipment used in the frequency range 10 kHz-50 MHz the calibration is conducted in our TEM cell. If the equipment is to be calibrated in the frequency range 50 MHz-18 GHz this takes place in our fully anechoic chamber "Hertz". The calibration is done according to internal methods, which are based on IEEE 1309-2013. All the calibrations are conducted by placing the equipment in a calculable electrical field and then recording the response of the equipment. The quota between the by the equipment displayed level and the applied field gives a correction factor that is unique for the specific equipment.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Calibration certificate containing the correction factors for the requested frequencies. The certificate is tracible to a NMI.

Archival permanence and durability – Writing, printing and copying on paper (ISO 11798)

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Archival permanence and durability – Recording on paper (ISO 11798) Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Testing the archival permanence and durability of recording (writing, printing and copying) on paper according to ISO 11798 is one of our specialties. All types of recording are covered, such as writing from pens and stamps, copying from copying machines and printing from printers (laser printers, inkjet printers, and multifunction devices).

Purpose/Benefit:

The need for ISO 11798 arises from the strong Swedish Archives Act and the necessity for information preservation for the future. The Swedish National Archives’ technical regulations (RA-FS 2006:4) align with the Archive Law and require archival permanence for documents to be preserved in archives. Accordingly, ISO 11798 has been implemented as specification requirements in these regulations.

RISE (formerly SP) has been testing the permanence and durability of paper since the early 1900s and subsequently also the writing on paper, focusing on properties crucial for the durability of writing. As new writing and printing methods have been introduced to the market, testing methods have been adapted to evaluate new properties.

Documents with writing, printing or copying that meet the standard’s requirements are permanent, provided they are stored in an archival environment and produced in combination with permanent paper (in accordance with ISO 9706 or ISO 11108) as substrate.

Purpose

The purpose of the standard is to ensure that archival documents are readable and durable both now and in the future. The documents should withstand long-term storage, be able to be copied, scanned, and handled without being destroyed, and endure some exposure to light, water, and heat. Additionally, the writing and printing (and the process of printing for laser printers) must not negatively affect the paper’s strength.

Products tested according to ISO 11798 and meeting the requirements can be certified by RISE.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The permanence and durability of recording on paper produced with writing materials—such as ink from pens and stamp pads—or paper documents produced using equipment like copiers, laser printers, and other types of printers is examined according to ISO 11798. ISO 11798 contains both the testing procedure and requirements that needs to be fulfilled.

The recording is evaluated using various methods, including tensile testing, folding endurance, optical density, color change (for color printers), and abrasion.

The standard specifies requirements in the form of:

  • Appearance of the recording
  • Lightfastness
  • Water resistance
  • Transfer of writing to adjacent documents when stacked
  • Abrasion resistance
  • Heat resistance
  • Effect of writing on the mechanical strength of the paper
  • Effect of the printing process on the mechanical strength of the paper (for laser printers)

The standard also specifies the paper to be used for producing recording (ISO 9706 and ISO 11108).

Accreditation

The testing activities for recording on paper maintain high quality through accreditation according to SS-EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

A test report from an accredited laboratory and statement on whether the test results meet the requirements of ISO 11798 or not.

Archive storage media – Archive boxes, file covers and other enclosures for storage of paper documents (ISO 16245)

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Archive storage media – Boxes, file covers and enclosures (ISO 16245) Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Archive boxes (made of cardboard) and file covers (made of paper) are used for archiving and storing documents. These storage materials are included in the National Archives’ regulations on technical requirements and can be tested according to ISO 16245. The requirements cover strength properties, functionality, and material selection.

Purpose/Benefit:

Archive boxes and file covers can be tested according to ISO 16245. The requirements cover strength properties, functionality, and material selection. It is important that archive boxes and file covers are tested according to this standard to ensure the preservation of documents printed on permanent paper and with permanent writing or printing. However, the storage materials cannot compensate for poor storage conditions.

There is also a desire to be able to label archive boxes and other storage materials with self-adhesive labels that do not fall off over time or become illegible. RISE also performs this testing according to RA-FS 2006:4, appendix 3, for self-adhesive labels. Adhesion is a central part of this testing, and two different types of archive boxes (or other types of storage media) are used in the testing

Certification of control units, evaluation of cash registers and payment systems

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Payment systems Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

It is important that payments are registered correctly, reliably and with confidentiality. Payment systems in society continue to evolve. Today we see electronic receipts, payments over the Internet and payments via mobile phone. RISE works with security and reliability in payment systems. Testing is offered for control units and cash registers

Purpose/Benefit:

RISE offers the following services for payment systems:
• Certification of control units in accordance with the Swedish Tax Agency's regulations
• Evaluation of cash registers in accordance with the Swedish Tax Agency's regulations
• Risk Analysis

Companies that sell goods or services for cash payment must, according to the Swedish Tax Agency, have a certified cash register. The purpose is to protect serious entrepreneurs in the cash trade against unfair competition. The cash register must be connected to a certified control unit that reads the transactions in the cash register and creates a control code. RISE can help companies that produce control units with the certificates needed to be able to sell in Sweden. Swedac has accredited RISE as a certification body for cash register control units.

Companies that market cash registers in Sweden must certify that they meet the Swedish Tax Agency's requirements. RISE can evaluate whether a cash register complies with the Swedish Tax Agency's regulations.

All payment systems must be dependable. A risk analysis together with RISE can be used to choose between payment solutions.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

An evaluation of a control unit encompasses both the proper functioning of the control unit as well as information security during development and production. The requirements of the Swedish Tax Agency's regulations (SKVFS 2009:12, SKVFS 2012:5 and SKVFS 2016:1) are evaluated through design review, functional testing, analysis and fault injection. The certification includes tests of functionality, safety, performance, reliability and user environment as well as requirements for manufacturing. In addition, RISE carries out an evaluation (reference testing) at least once a year of control units from the manufacturer's manufacturing environment. We also audit the manufacturer's production environment at least once a year.

The evaluation of a cash register entails functional tests to ascertain that the functions meet the requirements of the Swedish Tax Agency's statute SKVFS 2014:9. The tests do not normally include the task of searching for unauthorized functions, but the purpose is to confirm that existing functions are correctly implemented.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The result of the RISE evaluation is reported in a written report, as well as in a certificate if the requirements of the Swedish Tax Agency's regulations for control units are fulfilled.

Delivery time:

Delivery time depends on whether the equipment is ready at the start of the evaluation, or ifthe evaluation takes place in parallel with parts of the development work.
