Interaction Seeds integrated art & design with science & innovation by exploring their mutual challenges and connections. These four domains are united by the fact that they address similar contemporary challenges, but each has its own unique approaches and aims of its practices.

The interaction seeds project explored how these domains can collaborate but also discusses the challenges and risks of integrating them in the same process. Art & design, specifically, can challenge standard assumptions of how to do science and innovation, while scientific knowledge and innovations can also drive artistic and designerly practices forward.

The project gathered inspiring and replicable examples of the merger of art & design with science & innovation from all over Europe in a repository made freely available online. 20 adapted "seeds" from this repository was implemented in 5 different local ecosystems located in France, Spain, Greece and Sweden.

RISE implemented 5 seeds in Sweden that address the following domains:

  • Cleaning up our digital waste
  • Exploring challenges of cultural institutions in urban spaces
  • Co-creating future soundscapes in cities
  • The design of sufficiency
  • Systems contributing to elderly well-being

Aims and objectives

The project aimed to support industry in understanding and defining their long-term digital infrastructure needs. The project’s objectives therefore were to define a guiding framework and service based on real industry use cases to develop requirements for corresponding digital infrastructure.

Results and outcomes

The STRIDE project explored how Swedish industry can prepare for a new generation of digital and AI-driven solutions by developing a structured, human-centered way to define the digital infrastructure required for future applications. Today, manufacturers face growing challenges related to IT–OT integration, cybersecurity, regulatory demands, and the rapid expansion of AI technologies. STRIDE addressed these challenges through a unique combination of user-focused methods, hands-on testing, and analysis of emerging AI and cybersecurity risks.

A New Method for Digital Infrastructure Planning

A central result of STRIDE is the Guidance Service, a practical methodology that helps companies identify, refine, and validate the infrastructure they need for new digital solutions. The method is lightweight, repeatable, and incorporates real stakeholder needs rather than technology assumptions. It guides organisations from early exploration to clear, investment-ready requirements and can already be applied across different industrial contexts.

State-of-the-Art Insights: AI, Security and Compliance

The project also delivers an accessible overview of current risks to and from AI, relevant cybersecurity frameworks, and implications of the EU AI Act. These insights help companies navigate the fast-evolving landscape of AI governance, threat modelling, and compliance planning, and provide the foundation for RISE's AI risk classification approach for industrial applications.

Proof-of-Concept in Industrial Quality Inspection

To validate the method in practice, STRIDE carried out a Proof-of-Concept with real production data. Defect samples from laminate manufacturing were scanned using Mitsubishi Electric’s line-scan imaging technology and used to train an AI model. The PoC showed that both the imaging hardware and the AI model can detect defects with promising accuracy. This gives partners the confidence to move toward a future pilot and clarifies technical requirements for real-time industrial deployment.

Industry Impact and Future Opportunities

STRIDE has helped project partners understand what digital infrastructure they need, which technologies are ready for procurement, and where further development is required. The results also support Sweden’s ambitions for sustainable and innovative industry, aligning with Agenda 2030 goals on decent work, industry and infrastructure, and responsible production.

Future work may focus on scaling the methodology to new use cases, enabling reusability of AI models across industrial sites, and incorporating AI-assisted tools to analyse stakeholder insights more efficiently.

New medicines need capital - and the right development partner

Drug development

Drug development is at the heart of society. But developing a commercial product is a long, expensive and complex process – and smaller companies can easily get stuck along the way.
"With a long-term development partner, you are more likely to secure everything from funding to expertise and equipment," says Anna Minidis, who works with life sciences at RISE.

In the pharmaceutical sector, it takes an average of 12 years to develop a commercial product. For completely new areas of medicine, it can take even longer, up to 30 years. Only one in 5,000 new substances is eventually approved for sale by regulatory authorities such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in the EU.

So you need persistence, capital and knowledge if you want your innovation to succeed.

Opportunities for public funding

As a result, there are large amounts of funding available, both nationally in Sweden through Vinnova and through various EU funding instruments, which can often cover up to half of the development costs.

Leif Lyckebäck, Business Developer at RISE, has in his role at RISE helped hundreds of innovation-driven small businesses in different industries to find funding for their development and scale-up work. He believes that there is a lot of public funding available for innovation among small and medium-sized enterprises. But you have to navigate the wide range of grants and subsidies, understand the eligibility criteria and what activities you can apply for.

"There is a lot of public support available for innovative SMEs to promote public health. However, you need to understand at what stage of development you should apply. In addition to funding specifically targeted at drug development and life sciences, there is also a lot of funding to stimulate development based on really deep research and in specifically identified 'impact areas', which can sometimes be relevant to drug development companies. Examples include advanced digitalisation, sustainable manufacturing or civil and military innovation. There is simply a lot of funding to apply for, but at the same time it is difficult for an individual innovator who is not an expert to navigate when, for example, they need to find project funding for their next stage of development."

External innovation support a key factor

Anna Minidis believes that a key factor for success as a small company, compared to large companies, is finding external innovation support.

"Companies are often started by researchers, for example a group of doctors with specific expertise in their field. To go from idea to finished drug and market a product, they need to attract and assemble a team with the expertise needed for efficient, high-quality development along the entire value chain. For example, medical, pharmacological, chemical, formulation, process development, scale-up, analytical, toxicological, quality and regulatory expertise."

Companies can access lab equipment, method development and prototyping, obtain quality data and compile quality documentation.

The development partner accompanies the company all the way

Acting as a link between the research and industrial phases, RISE often acts as a full development partner for smaller companies throughout the entire development journey. It helps the innovator to find the right funding, expertise and guidance at all key stages of development. It also ensures technical expertise and the ability to take the project from the research environment to applied development and scale-up, with the aim of developing industrially and regulatory sustainable methods.

"Companies can gain access to laboratory equipment, method development and prototyping, quality data and quality documentation. We can also play an advisory role and help innovators with a plan and see what development steps the drug needs, adapted to the stage of development it is at," says Anna Minidis.

Just as important as access to funding is ensuring that you own the rights to your innovation. This is critical to the success of a small business.

"RISE has a patent department that can help develop a strategy for securing the intellectual property rights associated with development work. In addition, RISE has a number of other services designed to support innovative small and medium-sized enterprises in various industries – for example, technology readiness assessment, life cycle analysis and various types of certification," says Leif Lyckebäck.

RISE finds funding and acts as a development partner throughout the development journey

RISE helps small and medium sized companies find funding and provides unique capacity in the form of expertise, laboratories and test and demonstration environments. In this way, companies can reduce their time to market and lower their risk. Ultimately, the aim is to create competitive companies for an international market.

Over the past few years, RISE has met with more than 250 small companies as part of the programme. This has generated more than SEK 250 million in funding for about 80 of the companies, and led to more than 100 major expert initiatives and projects in a test and demonstration environment.

Ireland quality assures innovation leaders with help from RISE

Cliffs of Moher

Ireland's official standards body learned that there was a specialized team in Sweden certifying innovation managers – and decided to use that expertise to take the next step in its own use of innovation management. Here is the first Irishman to pass through the eye of the needle.

Sean McNulty

Taking new and better solutions from an idea to something that actually creates value for society, businesses and individuals requires teams of people who are open to change. And within that team, the innovation leader plays a particularly important role. These are people with specific knowledge and experience that make them well-positioned to drive change in the contexts in which they operate.

"Bringing about change within an existing organization is challenging. It's actually easier to start something from scratch, which explains why we have so many start-ups and a demand for better services and user experiences," says Sean McNulty, innovation specialist at Irish company Insight Innovation:

"Some people drive change intuitively and don't need an innovation management guide or standard, but many of us do because we have fixed mindsets and have learned to follow set linear processes. Like quality management, where tomorrow we have to repeat what we did yesterday to establish an expected level of quality."

Innovation is very much about stepping into the unknown, identifying the problems that need to be solved first. Those on the journey must first change their mindset, understand the challenges of having an innovative mindset and managing such a process. Certification as an innovation leader demonstrates to others that you have developed expertise in the field and can share your knowledge and experience in developing systematic innovation work, for example according to ISO 56001 Innovation Management System.

"Confidence in the individual's innovation management skills is important to get the rest of the organization and senior decision makers to listen and trust the framework and processes that need to be implemented to achieve the desired outcomes and impact. Whether that is at the societal, commercial, or systems and policy level," says Sean McNulty.

Some people drive change intuitively and don't need an innovation management guide or standard, but many of us do.

First to be certified

Mr. McNulty is a member of an international working group for the development of ISO standards. Among other things, he chaired the NSAI team in Ireland that helped develop ISO 56001, the world's first requirements standard for innovation management.

He is also the first Irishman to be certified as an innovation manager. RISE project manager Magnus Karlsson, who played the same leading role as Sean McNulty in the development of ISO 56001 in Sweden, suggested the possibility of certification through RISE. Sean McNulty then opted to complete the process with written and oral exams remotely. Now others driving innovation in Ireland can do the same.

The National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI), where Sean McNulty chairs the Innovation Committee, is Ireland's official standardization body. In 2024, the NSAI partnered with RISE to certify innovation leaders in Ireland. Stina Wibom, certification engineer and head of personal certification at RISE, saw no obstacles to bringing Swedish expertise across the North and Irish Seas.

"There are eight of us working on this, and we are based in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Lund and Borås, so it makes no difference if there are one or two national borders between us and the person going through the certification process. Both the written and oral exams are digital and the material submitted is in English, even for our Swedish customers," she explains.

Case shows how knowledge is used

In addition to a written knowledge test, the certification process consists of an assignment in which the candidate must describe a case that demonstrates how the knowledge of innovation management is put into practice. The case is also presented orally in a video meeting.

"I chose to share a situation where I was helping others identify, validate, and implement a new solution, rather than a case from years ago where I was the one implementing the solution. It was more honest to reflect where I am now in my career," says Sean McNulty, who as an innovation specialist helps teams every day to identify problems worth solving, develop new solutions, products and services – and get them implemented."

The fact that NSAI, with the help of Swedish certification engineers, is now able to certify individuals like Sean McNulty illustrates the mission of innovation leaders on an international level, for the benefit of business and society at large.

Certified Innovation Leader

In collaboration with the professional association Innovation Leaders, RISE has developed a certification for innovation leaders who lead and organize innovation initiatives in their work. The certification is valid for five years, provided that an annual report is submitted to RISE.

What is Remanufacturing?

Remanufacturing is a process where a used product is disassembled and its components are restored to the same or higher performance level than a new product. In some cases, the product is reassembled in its original form, but remanufactured components can also be used in other products.

How does remanufacturing differ from repair and renovation?

Remanufacturing is a more comprehensive and systematic process than repair and renovation. In remanufacturing, the product is completely disassembled and all components are inspected and replaced if necessary. Repairs typically involve smaller interventions to address specific issues, while remanufacturing restores the product's or component's functionality.

What’s the difference between remanufacturing and recycling?

Remanufacturing involves restoring a used product to the same or higher standard than the original, while recycling means breaking the product down and reusing the material to create new products. Remanufacturing preserves more of the original product’s value and performance.

What are the benefits of remanufacturing?

Remanufacturing can reduce material waste, lower costs for new raw materials, cut down on CO2 emissions and create a more sustainable supply chain. It also allows the reuse of existing equipment parts rather than purchasing new ones, reducing dependence on rare materials.

Can all products be remanufactured?

Not all products are suitable for remanufacturing. For a product to be remanufactured, its components need to be durable and there must be an efficient process to restore them to a high standard. Products oe components with a long lifespan and technical specifications that can be restored are typically the best candidates.

What is needed to implement remanufacturing in my business?

Successfully implementing remanufacturing requires a detailed understanding of the product's lifecycle, access to the right resources, and a well-thought-out process. RISE provides tailored solutions to help businesses map out remanufacturing opportunities, identify the best products to remanufacture, and implement the necessary processes.

What role does the EU play in promoting remanufacturing?

The EU has implemented regulations and initiatives to promote a circular economy, including support for remanufacturing and sustainable production methods. Through legislation on sustainable products and requirements for increased reuse and recycling, more businesses are expected to transition to circular business models, where remanufacturing plays a key role.

One of the major challenges in a transition to a sustainable society, especially in a rapidly growing region like North of Sweden, is to transform places into sustainable, enriching, democratic and meaningful places for everyone. Places and environments that we can all be proud of for generations to come. Culture and creativity play a major role to succeed in this transformation.

The cultural and creative industries play an important role in succeeding in this societal transformation. The industries with approximately 130,000 companies (=1/10 of Sweden's companies) and 190,000 professional practitioners are one of Sweden's important industries. The value that is created often reaches international markets quickly through exports and with digital business models and channels.

Specific to the industries is that they are 90% micro and small companies where the business model often consists of collaborating with others in, for example, film, fashion, music, games, design, performing arts and cultural heritage, but also with other industries in, for example, product - and site development. Collaborations and networks that create innovative power, cohesion and resilience.

Creative North aims to strengthen entrepreneurship, cooperation and innovation and create new business opportunities for companies in the cultural and creative industries. We do this by creating:

  • Meeting places
  • Business and innovation support
  • Coaching and expertise
  • Design workshops and place development.
  • Communication and visibility
  • S-P-O-K Sustainable production and consumption
