Testing of microclimate properties using The Sweating Indentor

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Testing of microclimate properties Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Using the equipment The Sweating Indentor, properties related to microclimate can be measured, which is essential for a product’s perceived comfort.

Purpose/Benefit:

For products with close-to-body use, such as clothes, furniture, and mattresses, their microclimate properties are important for them to be perceived as comfortable. Such properties are called “thermophysiological properties” within the comfort area, and are crucial for a product to be perceived as “moderately warm” and not cause discomfort due to sweating. By performing measurements with the sweating impression body, numerical values can be assigned to these material properties, which can be of great help in comparing different products and in product development.

Products for which this measurement method is suitable include: Beds, mattresses, seat cushions, and wound dressings.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The Sweating Indentor is heated to body temperature and contains water which can be released through a perforated surface in the form of water vapor at a rate that roughly corresponds to the moisture release from a human body at rest. The impression body can thus be considered to simulate a human body (which emits heat and moisture). By pressing the impression body against the test object, with a temperature and humidity sensor placed in the contact zone, the resulting temperature and relative humidity can be determined

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

A test assignment results in measurement values for the microclimate that was measured, i.e., the temperature and relative humidity that the test body gave rise to. The test result is documented in a technical report.

Colour fastness- Tests for colour fastness to perspiration SS-EN ISO 105-E04

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Tests for colour fastness to perspiration SS-EN ISO 105-E04 Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

It is important that dyed textiles maintain their intended colour and do not bleed onto other fabrics and materials through staining. When we sweat, fabrics that come into contact with the skin can be affected, and if the colour does not adhere as it should, it can cause unwanted staining.

Purpose/Benefit:

One of the most common sources of consumer complaints is when dyed textiles change and vary too much from the purchased product and become unacceptable to the user. A piece of fabric can have good colour fastness in one state but worse in another. It can therefore be important to test a textile’s colour fastness when exposed to sweat. A good example is a light-coloured bra that is discoloured by a coloured shirt that has become moist from sweat.

Poor colour fastness can be due to pretreatment, choice of dye, dyeing process, aftertreatment, and use.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The fabric is moistened with sweat liquid and placed under pressure at 37°C for 4 hours together with staining-fabric of the chosen fiber type. Colour change and staining are assessed in a light box under standardized light against a gray scale.

High time to prepare for Digital Product Passports

Digital Product Passport

Almost everything sold in the EU could soon need a so-called digital product passport. This will place new demands on manufacturers and importers in terms of sustainability data. But the new requirements could also lead to entirely new business models.

In July 2024, the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) came into effect. Its purpose is to make sustainable products the norm in the EU's single market and reduce the environmental impact of products throughout their lifecycle.

"One part of ESPR is the so-called digital product passport, or DPP," says Hanna Lindén, acting business and innovation area manager for material transition at RISE. "The digital passports will follow the products and make it possible to easily and quickly get all the sustainability data about the product, from raw material to finished product. It will be on a 'need to know' basis, so not everyone will have access to all the data, but different groups will have access to the data they need. For example, authorities will be able to carry out checks more easily, customers will be able to make informed choices and it will be easier to repair a product".

Collected data enables new business models

Furthermore, the idea is that all this collected data can lead to new, circular business models.

"If you have all the data in one place, it becomes much easier to plan for upgrades, reuse or recycling, for example. In addition, structured data has value in itself. It can form the basis of future business and is expected to reduce environmental impact, as access to information makes environmental impacts visible and can help manufacturers and customers make sustainable choices."

The digital product passport means that products and/or batches will need to have some form of data carrier that accompanies them throughout their lifetime. But how this will work and what it will contain can vary between different product categories.

"Different categories have different conditions and challenges, so there will probably be different requirements for textiles and car tyres, for example."

Getting all the information needed for the product passports will require cooperation

High time for Swedish companies to start preparing

In other words, it is not yet clear how the digital product passports will be designed in detail and what they will cover, but there is no doubt that they are coming.

"Feasibility studies are currently underway for textiles and footwear, as well as iron and steel. These are expected to be completed in late 2025, followed by an estimated implementation period of around 18 months."

Since many categories of products sold in the EU internal market will be covered, it is time for Swedish companies to start preparing.

"Even if you are only a subcontractor, and do not sell to the end consumer, you are part of a value chain and are responsible for producing the necessary data. Unfortunately, many companies are not aware of this and have not started to prepare."

But what can you do if it is not yet clear what the final passports will look like? Quite a lot, explains Hanna Lindén:

"First of all, you need to understand what the upcoming legislation means and how it will affect your business."

Secondly, companies need to start looking at the different supply chains they are part of and what their relationships look like.

"Getting all the information you need for the product passports will require collaboration, and companies can start thinking now about whether they have the relationships in place for the increased collaboration that will be required."

Thirdly, it is time to take stock of the information available about the products and consider how it needs to be expanded and structured. In other words, there is a lot to do, and Hanna Lindén's best advice is to get help.

"I come across certain major companies that possess the resources internally. However, for companies that find the task overwhelming and are uncertain about where to start, seeking assistance from us at RISE is a viable option. We keep a close eye on developments and can let you know what is happening."

Expertise needed for practical work

RISE also has much of the specialist expertise needed to carry out the practical work.

"For example, we have technical expertise in everything from databases to QR codes, as well as business knowledge. Digital product passports can create circular business models, but this requires knowledge of life cycle analysis, reuse, business development and so on. Used correctly, this can be an exciting transition."

Making the textile industry more transparent and sustainable

circulated textile

A revolutionary legislation for a textile industry that needs to become more sustainable. That's how Lisa Schwarz Bour, Director of Environment and Sustainable Chemistry at RISE, describes the ESPR - Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulations. An important novelty is the requirement for a digital product passport, in which companies must disclose the materials a product contains and how it can be repaired and recycled. From 2027, all companies within the EU are obligated to comply with ESPR.

Significant changes are expected in the textile industry in the coming years. Powerful measures are being taken to increase textile recycling. From 2025, it is prohibited within the EU to discard or send unsold clothes, shoes, and textiles for incineration. According to the EU Commission, the average EU citizen currently throws away 11 kilograms of textiles each year.

The ESPR, Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, is a framework aimed at adapting products for climate neutrality and a circular economy, as well as making sustainable products the norm within the EU. The legislative proposal was published in March 2022. Currently, work is underway to prioritize product categories for the part of the law that includes digital product passports, which require companies to share information related to environment and sustainability.

"ESPR affects both the textile industry and consumers."

"The ESPR is a revolutionary legislation. It is very comprehensive and affects every part of the textile industry. It also intends to help consumers make more sustainable choices," says Lisa Schwarz Bour.

She sees several advantages with the new law, such as the introduction of a common system for increased traceability.

"Textile materials are often very complex. In order to achieve a high value on a recycled raw material, we need to know more than we do today about the original material. To effectively recycle a material, one may need access to information on how it has been constructed or what type of dyeing has been used, for example."

In order to achieve a high value on a recycled raw material, we need to know more than we do today about the original material.

Important to learn more about the ESPR

So what should a Swedish company do if it wants to prepare for - and also influence - the new legislation? A good start is to learn more about the contents of the legislation. All the information is publicly available.

You can also contact RISE if you have questions and want to know more.

The EU Commission has so-called stakeholder consultations that are open and where companies themselves can provide input.

Lisa Schwarz Bour:

"To prepare, companies can begin by discussing the contents of the legislation, and how it may affect them and future products, with their subcontractors and customers."

Focus on digital product passports

RISE is actively working with the ESPR, and especially with the digital product passports. In order to influence the product-specific requirements, RISE participates as an associated partner in the EU-funded project CIRPASS, which helps designing the passports. RISE is primarily interested in the level of detail in the information that is to be shared.

In March 2022, the EU adopted a textile strategy that requires the textile industry to become more socially and environmentally sustainable.

"The ESPR covers parts of the strategy, which expresses a strong desire within the EU to move from fast fashion to more long-lasting materials and products that prioritize sustainability and consumer needs," says Lisa Schwarz Bour."

Sustainable materials: a major research area

In parallel with the ESPR, RISE is actively working on developing sustainable and long-lasting materials. Within the textile field, tests and chemical analyses of textile materials, fiber development, as well as chemical and mechanical recycling, are underway. RISE is also examining sustainability aspects related to process and product, through methods such as life cycle analysis.

"In addition to that, we support companies in related matters. Through the Chemicals Group at RISE, one can receive assistance in communicating relevant chemical requirements to subcontractors and in addressing questions and demands from consumers or the media," says Lisa Schwarz Bour.

Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR)

A legislative proposal from the EU Commission aimed at making products more sustainable. It covers all types of products on the market except for food, animal feed, and pharmaceuticals. The legislative proposal is expected to lead to new product designs as well as changes in manufacturing processes and business models. The law is expected to be adopted in 2024, and digital product passports will be implemented in 2026. From 2027, all affected companies are obligated to provide this type of product information.
