The project is contributing to the biobased economy

A sustainable future entails a fundamental shift from how goods for basic needs are sourced and produced today. This project aims to create new value chains for industrial raw materials derived from side streams of food production.  As a result, innovative chemical products can be produced using ingredients that are biobased, locally sourced, non-seasonal, and contribute to minimal land-use.

The project starts with sampling from side-streams generated by different process batches in mycoprotein food production.

Results from sample analysis will aim focus on the largest potential. A scalable extraction process will be developed while analysing relevant extract properties. Based on positive results from these stages, conceptual products will be developed and applied on textile materials. Evaluation by standard testing of material properties will generate feedback for process improvements. At the end feasibility and sustainability assessments will be performed.

The importance of the project

It is important to replace fossil plastics and persistent polymers that are used in the textile industry today. This project focusses on this goal by researching biobased, biodegradable, and circular alternatives. Moreover, it is important to invest in national supply chains to produce innovative products. This allows for reduced environmental impact and benefits local businesses.

Expected Results

The project offers increased collaboration opportunities between medium-sized enterprises and aims to create local and future-proof supply chains that will be unique in Sweden. The project will provide underpinning for scaling up extraction processes that yield biomolecules derived from new types of side-streams generated by state-of-the-art food production by fungi. Once purified, these will meet an existing demand in industry for use in biobased products that are innovative replacements for polluting, fossil-based plastics and polymers extensively used today.

However, global textile consumption has also resulted in negative environmental and societal effects. The production of textiles requires large amounts of water, energy, and chemicals. Additionally, increased consumption leading to increased waste management contributes to climate change.

To address these challenges, there has been an increased focus on sustainability within the textile industry. Many companies are working to reduce their environmental impact by using more sustainable materials, reducing water and energy consumption, and improving waste management and recycling. Initiatives such as circular economy have also begun to gain traction to reduce overconsumption and promote more sustainable textile consumption.

RISE, together with Circulose (previously Renewcell), Domsjö Fabriker, and Mid Sweden University, has a project focusing on textile fiber recycling. It consists of four parts:

  1. Characterization of textile waste pulp for viscose processing.
  2. Accessibility of recycled cotton fibers.
  3. Impact of synthetic fibers in the viscose process.
  4. Blending of recycled textile waste and wood pulp.

The global fashion industry generates more than 92 million tonnes of textile waste every year and contributes 8–10% of global CO₂ emissions. Within the European Union, textile waste amounted to 6.94 million tonnes in 2022, making textile consumption the fifth largest contributor to environmental and climate pressures. CIRCLEWEAR aims to help mitigate these impacts by enabling affordable, scalable, and efficient clothing repairs through a digital platform.

The project is led by RISE in partnership with the product design studio Boid AB and the repair service start‑up Circle Wear AB. CIRCLEWEAR has conducted scientific research on clothing repair behaviour and the repair business ecosystem, and has developed a scalable digital repair platform for Circle Wear AB. The platform, developed by Boid AB with insights from RISE research, is a web‑based service where consumers—particularly those needing jeans repairs—can describe their repair needs, upload images, find local menders, request cost estimates, choose pick‑up and delivery options, and track the entire process. See the platform here, and watch the demonstration clip here.

In addition, CIRCLEWEAR has produced and submitted two scientific articles to peer‑reviewed international journals. The first article examines repair business ecosystems and the potential of a digital platform to connect consumers, menders, and logistics actors. Using qualitative and quantitative analyses, the study shows that although certain technical and cultural barriers remain, the foundational actors and infrastructure needed for a viable repair ecosystem are already in place.

The second article is based on a choice experiment involving more than 3,000 respondents from Denmark, Poland, and Sweden. The experiment investigated consumer preferences for various features of digital‑platform‑enabled repair services, including pick‑up and delivery, repair time, payment timing, and cost. The results show strong potential demand for platform‑enabled repair services and reveal that consumers across all three countries strongly prefer shorter repair times. Moreover, the study identifies three distinct segments in each country:

  • a majority value‑oriented segment that seeks good service features at a reasonable cost,
  • a highly price‑sensitive segment, and
  • a small group of indifferent bystanders with no strong preferences.
