In-situ Scanning electron microscope
In‑situ SEM enables real-time studies of microstructural changes under controlled reactive enviroments. The technique is unique and makes it possible to follow, for exaple, the combustion and ash formation och a carbon-based materal, or the sintering of a lime-based material.
At RISE in Piteå, there is a Apreo 2S Hi-Vac SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) from Thermo Fisher. To optimize the analysis of different types of samples, the instrument is equipped with several detectors:
- ETD – Everhart-Thornley Detector.
- T1, T2 och T3 - In-lens trinity detectors.
- CBS/ABS – BSE-detector
- STEM – Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy
- EDS – Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy for elemental analysis
In addition to these detectors, the instrument is equipped with:
- µHeater - Enables studies of a sample during heating up to 1200 °C, with extremely fast heating rates up to 10 000 °C/s
- µReactor – In addition to the heat function, a sample can simultaneously be studied in a specific gas atmosphere, such as nitrogen, oxegen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide etc.
