Heavy rains and heat waves are extraordinary events that are expected to become more common as the climate changes. Particularly vulnerable is the built environment with very hard surfaces and heat-reflecting buildings. Climate adaptation measures are costly, but by creating multifunctional facilities that generate many benefits, great values can be added to the urban environment.

In a number of case studies in Stockholm and Västerås, various existing methods are tested to evaluate and prioritize measures. An evaluation is made to provide concrete recommendations on how solutions can interact for the best multifunctional benefit and cost efficiency. This enables socio-economically motivated priorities so that cities can to a greater extent achieve resilience in the urban development process. In order to bridge deadlocks and increase transparency, decision support models are developed for, among other things, cross-sectoral collaboration, cost distribution and citizen involvement.

Pre-study of test bed for stormwater facilities

Test bed for stormwater facilities

A test bed for stormwater facilities enables evaluation of facilities at standardized conditions carried out by an independent third party, which creates security as uncertainties regarding the performance of facilities can be controlled and dismissed. This pre-study investigates how and where such a test bed can be constructed and located

A test bed where technology suppliers can have their facilities evaluated under standardized conditions by an independent third party creates security for customers and end users. When the standard* reaches a broad acceptance by users, requirements can be set on the performance of the facilities. This is because independent tests according to standards enable the comparison of facilities, which in turn will contribute to a sustainable society and reduced pollutions. The test bed will also help suppliers evaluate and test, and if necessary optimize, their products.

The project is divided into the following three parts:

  1. Investigate options for possible placement of a test bed. Advantages and disadvantages of different placements as well as fixed and mobile solutions are investigated.
  2. Investigate how the test bed should be constructed to achieve a set up according to the proposed standard for prefabricated compact stormwater facilities. This part deals with issues concerning the water that is led into facilities that are tested, water that comes out of facilities that are tested, sampling, addition of pollutants to the water that is tested and how the test bed can be adapted to also test graywater facilities.
  3. Gather experience from existing and/or previous test beds within VA technology through interviews to collect knowledge/avoid similar mistakes.

* In 2019, RISE produced a draft for a standard and work is in progress within RISE to produce a basis for a Swedish national standard (SNS).

Preparedness for extreme heatwaves in the future

Sun on a clear blue sky

Extreme heatwaves may become more frequent in the future, even in Sweden. It will involve huge challenges to local authorities and the responsibility they have to protect those who are most vulnerable, such as children and the elderly. RISE is helping municipalities increase their preparedness and reduce the effects of heatwaves.

Long periods when temperatures are above 30 C. Droughts, fires and health risks to many people in society. Those were the characteristics of summer 2018 in Sweden and throughout most of Europe. It also involved many challenges for municipalities in charge of running daycare centres, health clinics and homes for the elderly, for example.

“If more heatwaves come our way, like what we experienced during summer 2018, we’ll be in trouble. It’s particularly dangerous for children and the elderly, who are more vulnerable to extreme temperatures,” says Özüm Durgun.

“This is a problem that Sweden hasn’t really had to think about much. But, with climate change, we will probably experience and need to cope with more frequent heatwaves in the future. We need to increase awareness of the issue and municipalities must raise their level of preparedness,” says Maria Håkansson.

Both are researchers at RISE, working to increase society’s preparedness for extreme heatwaves. The goal is to describe the current trends and suggest methods and strategies that municipalities can use to prepare for, and employ during, heatwaves.

Schools and nursing homes most vulnerable

Focus is on the entities that are most vulnerable, such as schools, daycare centres, health clinics and retirement homes. RISE has collaborated with the municipalities of Lerum and Trelleborg, and conducted both analyses and interviews.

“This is a complex issue to manage. Many parts of the city administration need to be involved and coordinated. There are so many ways that we can adapt, too, such as creating more shade on playgrounds and changing schedules so that children play outside during cooler parts of the day. Food deliveries need to be managed safely during heatwaves as well. Furthermore, nursing homes need to be equipped for keeping the indoor climate comfortable,” says Maria Håkansson.

In order to get an overview of all the areas of a municipality that are impacted during extreme temperatures, special maps were created using satellite data and national meteorological information. By comparing periods when we have had heatwaves to years with average temperatures, researchers can identify trends and locations that are most vulnerable.

“We’re trying to identify the hot spots, i.e. the hottest locations in the municipalities. For example, are temperatures highest at the city centre, or are they high everywhere? We know, for example, that temperatures are impacted by the density of construction. Furthermore, blue and green help cool things down, i.e. forests, parks and water,” says  Özüm Durgun, in charge of analysing the maps and surveys.

In the end, all of us are affected by climate change

Experience from prior heatwaves is important

Employees working in various roles within both Lerum and Trelleborg municipalities were interviewed, both decisions-makers and people working with planning and administration, to identify which strategies and means of preparedness exist so that we can benefit from the experience of prior heatwaves. Both of the municipalities have been involved in the project and its development from the start, working in collaboration with researchers to discuss, analyse and share the results.

The project which ended in 2021 provided methods, solutions and strategies for decision support such that municipalities can be better prepared to cope with future heatwaves. Hopefully, it can also help them become more efficient and lower their costs, e.g. by lowering their dependence on resource-intensive cooling equipment. Although this study is focused on Trelleborg and Lerum, it is hoped that the knowledge gained from it can be applied on a broader spectrum.

Who will benefit from this project?

“We hope that all municipalities in Sweden can benefit. Other important target groups are the Public Health Agency of Sweden and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency. Property owners, constructions companies, the emergency services are others, as well as urban planners. Of course, all of it trickles down to individuals as well, because in the end, all of us are affected by climate change,” says Maria Håkansson.

Environmental impacts of agrifood and seafood -how to get it right

Environmental impact of food

RISE combines high competence within agriculture, fisheries, food and life cycle assessment, to support sustainable development

At RISE we have unique knowledge about the entire food system, combined with advanced LCA-competence. This gives us the opportunity to develop both production and products meeting high environmental standards. By generating a systematic understanding we can support companies, public bodies and organizations prioritize measures towards sustainability.

Environmental sustainability is very complex and there are numerous conflicts between goals. Several environmental impacts are relevant for food systems, and the variety between production systems are huge. Plant production, animal production, fisheries, aquaculture and horticulture all have unique challenges and possibilities. The emerging bioeconomy requires a re-formulation and new understanding of the concept “environmental sustainability, on a higher systems level. We need to manage and quantify impacts from circular and cascading material flows from different systems (e.g. energy, agriculture, biomaterials). To operationalize environmental improvement simplifications are needed, which in turns needs to be done without losing relevant information.

The combination of production- and LCA competence gives opportunities to develop useful knowledge on relevant, concrete and applicable measures in all types production systems.

One example is mapping of environmental footprint of supply chains and identification of improvement measures for production systems, products, and product portfolios.

Analyses of biorefineries and their products as well as impacts on surrounding systems is an important part to shape the future food production. Our methods and tools are tailored for different production systems to handle specific aspects.

Aggregating results from detailed studies into indicators is one way of making knowledge useful for decision making at different levels.

At RISE we facilitate food system’s actors possibilities to contribute to a sustainable society in an efficient and concrete ways. We also brings solid background for communication on sustainability.

Urban Stormwater Management

Stormwater
pond1

Growing Cities and a changing climate require improved stormwater management in Swedish cities in order to meet future challenges and create more attractive and liveable urban environments.

Due to progressing urbanization and densification of our cities in combination with climate change an efficient stormwater management is needed. Many cities do not have the ability to cope with increased amounts of stormwater in existing infrastructure that are expected to come in the future. Already today, the number of floods affecting Swedish cities is increasing, resulting in large socio-economic costs. Furthermore, stormwater can transport pollutants generated in our cities. Therefore, stormwater that is not detained and treated locally poses risks of transporting large amounts of pollutants to nearby recipients and in turn will damage the aquatic environment and degrade our water resources.

RISE collaborates with municipalities, authorities, industry organizations and academia to meet these challenges and plans for a sustainable and stormwater management. RISE also supports companies in their development and implementation of effective solutions for treatment, monitoring and safe transport of stormwater. Within RISE we have a broad expertise in stormwater modelling, decision support at various stages, construction of test and demo systems, sensors and standardization and certification for a variety of stormwater solutions.
