The socially sustainable entrepreneur - social sustainability and cons

The socially sustainable entrepreneur
Construction site

In what way can construction companies contribute to social sustainability during the construction phase? This project has focused on the social impacts that the activities of Swedish construction companies have during the construction phase. A decision support tool has been developed aimed at helping such companies assess their impacts.

So far, much work on urban social sustainability in a Swedish context has focused on the planning phase. Less work has been done that focuses on the construction phase. This is especially true in terms of how activities during the construction phase impacts the living conditions for people in the nearby neighborhood. This project has - in cooperation with three Swedish construction companies - studied such social impacts during the construction phase. Previous research and policy documents have also been analysed. A decision support tool aimed at Swedish construction companies was also developed. The tool consists of a hand book and a document with the help of which employees of construction companies will be able to deliberate on and assess the social impacts of their activities.

A virtual test bed, i.e. it is mainly built around the competence of simulation and modeling of materials and structures in fire, and how fires developes and affects the surrounding materials and structures.

Important tools are different softwares för CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and FEM (Finite Element Modeling). Within the test bed, quality assurance is a key factor. Together with our laboratory resources and experience from experiments simulations can be validated and controlled.

Examples of simulations that can be carried out are fire dynamics in underground facilities, loadbearing capacity of structures on fire, optimization of insulation for loadbearing elements, simulation of heat transfer and extinguishing of fires in silos for storage of self ignited wooden pellets.

NormViz – Norm-Creative Visualization in Urban Development

NormViz

Visualizations used in urban development are often based on stereotypical representations of age, gender and ethnicity. At the same time, visualizations can serve as powerful tools to contribute to more accessable and inclusive design solutions. NormViz developed methods and training for norm-creative visualization in urban planning and design.

In this project, researchers and analysts from RISE collaborated with Visual Arena, Skanska and White Arkitekter to explore new ways of visualizing places and design proposals within architecture and urban development projects.

Image: White, Samuel Michaelsson

The project included a range of activities, such as summarising insights from previous research, developing principles for norm-creative design and analysis, and testing the material in a number of real urban development projects in Gothenburg and Mölndal.

The results were compiled into a guide and handbook aimed at practitioners who want to strengthen their ability to work with norm-creative visualization in architecture and urban development.

Large scale fire tests are conducted on commission by Swedish and international customers. The large test hall, size 18 x 22 x 19 meters, is unique in Sweden and one of the largest in Europe. The hall is suitable for a wide variety of different types of large-scale fire tests to study ignitability, fire development, effect of fire extinguishing systems or to make reconstructions of certain fire events.

Advanced technical equipment is measuring heat release rate up to 15 MW, fire development effects and production of smoke and toxic gases. High environmental requirements require advanced smoke and water cleaning systems. Common clients are, among others, the vehicle, ship and building industry, manufacturers of fire extinguishing systems and research stakeholders.

Aim and goal

The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the major enablers of the digital transformation trend Europe currently is facing. It represents the vision that every object and location in the physical world can become part of the Internet. SCOTT bundles the European key players from several industrial domains including building and home / smart infrastructure, automotive, aeronautics, rail, and health to make full potential of cross-domain synergies and to strengthen Europe’s position in the emerging technology field of secure IoT.

Challenge

Physical parts of the IoT such as sensors/actuators and wired communication are generally well developed and established. However, creating trust in wireless solutions and increasing their social acceptance is thus one of the major challenges to bring out the full potential of the IoT.

Solution

SCOTT provides comprehensive cost-efficient solutions of wireless, end-to-end secure, trustworthy connectivity and interoperability using a standardized multi-domain reference architecture, being fully compliant with ISO 29182 – Sensor Network Reference Architecture, which fosters reusability, scalability, and interoperability of SCOTT solutions.

RISE created an innovation initiative based on data-driven services to explore the use of telematics platforms and data for 3rd-parties. Several actors were involved including business innovation, software and platform engineering and analytics and keystone firms/OEM. The resulting cloud service for quantified connected passenger vehicles and integrated third/party authentication services for access management and control for access protection, were developed and tested to support the design of novel data-driven services.

Effect

Tangible results from all use cases will ultimately be shown to a broader public via more than 20 demonstrators all over Europe. Use Cases will be further substantiated by the development and utilization of nearly 50 technical building blocks for security/safety, distributed cloud integration, energy efficiency/autonomy of devices and reference architecture/implementations, which are all necessary to realize the SCOTT use cases and facilitate composability of systems as well as cross-domain sharing of trustable wireless technologies and services.

The research villa is a near-zero energy one-family dwelling where you can test your product in real-life with a real climate and with a definite or varied type of accommodation. Over 100 measurement points detect, at a detail level, how different installation solutions, components or user-behaviors affect performance and function of the system.

The villa is built with special regard to have a well-insulated, tight and moisture-proof building structure, as well as energy-efficient installation technology. It is possible to simulate that a real family lives in the villa using so-called "manikins" and robots that control tap water flow, etc. Currently the plant consists of:

  • A well-insulated and air-tight building
  • Kitchen equipment and two bathrooms with shower
  • Heat pump with borehole
  • Heat recovery air handling unit (FTX)
  • Extraction hood (with possibility of separate supply air duct)
  • Solar cells with inverter
  • Floor heating
  • Radiator system
  • Industrial data acquisition system with sensors
