Simulation and Verification of Wireless Technologies

SIVERT 2
Automatic driving wireless connection

Wireless technologies in vehicles are becoming increasingly important for safety, traffic efficiency, and entertainment features. In SIVERT 2, the goal is to develop validation methods - simulations and testing methods for complete vehicles - for 5G mobile communication and for direct communication between vehicles and infrastructure.

Division: Division Safety and Transport

Wireless technology in vehicles, often located in a telematics and connectivity unit (Telematics Control Unit (TCU)) that uses integrated or external antennas, is becoming increasingly important for safety, traffic efficiency, and entertainment features. The standards of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) have been developed, now defined as 5G. At the same time, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) or vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) technologies, which use different standards, have continued to gain market attention. Therefore, there is a need to investigate the applicability of the simulation and verification methods developed within SIVERT, even for these emerging technologies that may be part of future TCUs.

Division: Division Safety and Transport

Modern vehicles are highly complex with sensors, actuators, control units, high-end user interfaces, communication interfaces, and support systems. The sensors precept internal states, such as speed, as well as information from the surrounding environment (e.g., radar). Electronic Control Units (ECUs) process data from the sensors, make decisions, and sends information to actuators, enabling drive functionality and other functions. Besides functionality to transport the vehicle in a safe and energy-efficient way, a modern vehicle also contains several other systems for, e.g., user experience, product update, or maintenance. Autonomous Driving (AD) vehicles are the next, already ongoing step in vehicle automation which will provide means to reduce environmental impact, increase traffic efficiency, safety, and user experience, but boosts the requirements on validations in labs as well as in the field.

"The things we do now might become useful in 30, 40 or 100 years"

Frequency comb

The research at the national laboratories at RISE must meet the needs for accurate metrology that society will have in the future. But it's not just about being able to measure more accurately. Making the technology accessible is at least as important.

Martin Zelan has a long perspective. In his own research in laser and atomic physics, and in his role of coordinating and developing the research that takes place at the national laboratories at RISE, it is crucial to look ahead and develop the technology that society will need in the future, even if we do not see those needs right now.

“Metrological research might benefit society in 30, 40 or perhaps 100 years. When the laser was developed in the 60s, there were few areas of use, but since then the technology has proven to be useful in a vast number of different fields. Fast mobile communication and positioning systems such as GPS would not have been possible without the curiosity-driven research in atomic physics that led to the "atomic second" in the 60s”, says Martin Zelan.

Looking back, we can see that the need for accuracy has always increased, and there is no reason to think that will change in the future

Accurate references

To measure something with a certain accuracy, there needs to be references that are even more accurate with which to compare. Developing these references is a large part of the research that takes place at the national laboratories and in international metrological research.

“An example where a lot of research is being done is in advanced atomic clocks. It is already possible to measure the second much more accurately than is possible with the atomic clocks that are used to produce our time scales today”, says Martin Zelan and continues:
“At the same time, it is difficult to see a direct application for that accuracy. We need to be humble in the face of the fact that we cannot predict all future needs and possible areas of use. But looking back, we can see that the need for accuracy has always increased, and there is no reason to think that will change in the future”.

He points out that the research at the national laboratories also has a strong focus on applications.

“It is very important that we work closely with the industry and stay relevant to the needs that exist today. Metrology is incredibly important for business, research, and trade, and we need to solve the measuring problems of today”, says Martin Zelan.

Cheaper and easier to use

Better measuring methods and more accurate measurements are important parts of metrology. But measuring with the highest accuracy is complicated and requires well-equipped laboratories with competent staff.

“One of the most important issues for the future is to make metrology more accessible by making it cheaper and easier to use. We need to develop solutions with high accuracy that can be used in the industry and help make Swedish businesses even more competitive. This is at least as important as measuring more accurately”, says Martin Zelan.

The development of SI a prerequisite

A prerequisite for making metrology more accessible is the development of the international system of units (SI). Since 2019, all SI units are defined based on defining constants and not on physical objects. The kilogram is no longer defined as the International Prototype Kilogram (IPK) in Paris, but instead as an equation containing the defining Planck's constant. In theory, this means that anyone with a good laboratory can "create" a kilogram to make comparisons with the utmost accuracy.

“Previously, to achieve the best possible accuracy, one had to compare with the IPK on site in Paris, which is not very accessible. The redefinition creates the conditions for better and more accessible metrology, and there are many initiatives around the world that aim to develop solutions that can be used directly in companies and businesses”, says Martin Zelan.

International collaborations

For a small National Metrology Institute like RISE, international collaborations are important to keep up with the developments in international metrology.

“We participate in many EU funded projects with our European colleagues, which is crucial for us to keep up both in technology and in terms of competence. Although we are far ahead in certain areas, we cannot compete with the big National Metrology Institutes in all fields. But one of the good things about international metrology is that results and technology are always shared, so their work also benefits us”, says Martin Zelan.

National Metrology Institute and National Laboratories

As the National Metrology Institute of Sweden RISE maintains metrological traceability through the National Laboratories for different physical quantities. Chains of calibrations, national standards and international comparisons makes certain that a kilogram is a kilogram and a meter a meter everywhere.

Detektion av förbjudna varor i post- och paketflöden

iFLOWS
Team at RISE for iFLOWS project

Analyses of microbial presence and activity on building materials

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Microbial analysis of building materials Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Moisture puts buildings at risk for mould damages, with negative consequences to both economy and health. Mould is not acceptable in a building if there is a risk of it affecting the indoor environment. When mould is indicated, or the end users experience problems in the indoor environment, microbial analyses are often used as an investigative aid.

Purpose/Benefit:

The purpose of this service is to determine the presence and extent of microbial growth, commonly called mould, on material surfaces. The service is mainly used for analyses of microbial growth on building materials from buildings. Other materials can also be analysed, such as textiles and packaging materials.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Analyses are performed according to SP-MET 3881, a well-documented method with proven efficacy which is used by several institutions nationally in Sweden. A quantitative analysis of the material is performed under light microscopy. The analysed microorganisms are fungi and a type of bacteria, actinomycetes. The extent of growth is evaluated and classified as ample, moderate, sparse, or no extent.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Analysis results are given in tabular form in a written report, along with guidelines for interpretation of results. The analyses provide the status of the sample provided, not the construction as a whole. Any suggested corrective measured for the building can not be based solely on these analysis results. Please bear in mind also that even if there is a documented connection between moisture, mould and health problems in the indoor environment, there is not currently any single microbial analysis which can determine potential ill health effects.

Delivery time:

Normal delivery time for analysis results is 5-10 standard working days. Faster results can per special agreement be provided within 1-3 standard working days.

Analysis of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances in food contact materials (FCM)

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Analysis of PFAS in food contact materials Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) is a class of chemicals found in, among other things, food contact materials, and they have garnered increasing attention as they are ubuiquitous, persistent and could have adverse effects on human health and the environment.

Purpose/Benefit:

Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) is a class of industrial chemicals which includes more than 4000 different compounds.  PFAS are widely used in food contact materials (FCMs) due to their water-repellent and non-stick properties. PFAS are highly persistent and bioaccumulated. Exposure to PFAS may lead to adverse effects on human health.

Currently there are no European harmonized restrictions for the use of PFAS in FCMs. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has made a new risk assessment related to the exposure of PFAS with focus on four compounds, namely perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS).

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Our laboratory of Product Safety offers testing solution for PFAS at trace level based on LC-MS/MS methods. We can help you to identify and quantify PFAS in final FCM products, semi-finished products, and raw materials. In addition to the four PFAS mentioned above, we have also the possibility to analyze other PFAS that are commonly regulated. The option to analyze particular PFAS can be added upon request from our customers. Please contact our analytical specialist for more detailed information.

Accelerated corrosion tests with corrosive gas are used to simulate in-use conditions in a laboratory.

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Accelerated Corrosion tests with corrosive gas Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Corrosion tests with corrosive gases are used when the corrosive atmosphere not solely is constituted of moisture and salts but also inorganic aggressive gases. The ambient environment is usually not only constituted of inorganic gases but also moisture and salts. In these cases, RISE may use both corrosive gas and salt mist.

Purpose/Benefit:

Accelerated corrosion testing with aggressive inorganic gases are utilized to simulate in-use conditions. A good estimation regarding the lifetime of products and technical systems is gained if a strong acceleration of the in-use conditions is used and the correct degradation mechanisms are proven.

To secure that the proper simulation of in-use conditions is used in the corrosion test, a verification of the degradation accuracy must be conducted. RISE use comparators, in this case metal coupons, to decide on type of test and corrosive level of the corrosion test to satisfy the needs of our customers.

These tests may be used both for comparable test, i.e., developing a new surface coating as well as estimate the life-time of new products.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The tests are performed in climatic chambers using well defined parameters such as; temperature (T) / Relative Humidity (RH) / gas concentrations etc. In order to secure the correctness of the levels of the present parameters all instruments are calibrated.

In our tests copper coupons are included to measure that the strength of the tests have been at the right level, i.e. corrosive gases, T and RH. Even for the corrosion standards copper coupons is the criterion for a well-performed test.

We perform chemical/physical analysis after the conclusion of the corrosion tests according to the customer’s needs. Surface analysis and thoroughly inspections of the tested objects are included in the commission established between the customer and RISE prior to start of the test. Test objects can also be biased with current or voltage during the test exposure, however, the effect of this bias should not affect testing conditions, i.e. affect temperature and relative humidity. This would mean that the standard in question is used incorrectly.

The following standard accredited test methods are used at our laboratory:

  • ISO 21207
  • IEC 60068-2-60, method 1-4
  • IEC 60068-2-42, 43
  • ISO 10062

In addition to common available tests on the market, other tests including the following corrosive gases could be performed at RISE, such as SO2, NO2, H2S, Cl2 and NH3.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The results are delivered in a RISE report, eventually added data could be added according to the customer’s desire.

Delivery time:

The test are started at once, provided no other booking occupies the starting date. RISE is aiming to deliver the test report within 1 week after the test´s closure.
