Analysis of Specific surface area, Pore size and Pore size distribution by BET. Quality level GMP or exploratory.

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Specific surface by BET Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

RISE offers analyses according to GMP or exploratory of Specific surface area using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method to gain information about a material's reactivity. Also measurements of Pore size and Pore size distribution. Analysis on solid samples such as powders, tablets, porous materials and catalysts.

Purpose/Benefit:

The specific surface area of a solid provides information about the reactive properties of the material. The dissolution rate of a drug is often correlated to the specific surface area, and the same applies to performance of, for example, batteries and catalysts.                                                   By measuring Specific surface area, information is obtained regarding the quality and functionality of the material.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The sample is prepared for analysis by degassing under vacuum at an elevated temperature or in a stream of inert gas, such as nitrogen.

During the analysis, inert gas molecules with a known area, such as nitrogen, are introduced to the sample. This is done in several rounds in a certain amount and to a certain pressure. The surface area of the sample is then determined by measuring exactly how many gas molecules are needed to adsorb directly onto the surface of the sample and first covering it in a so-called monolayer, and then in multilayers.

The specific surface area is then calculated based on the mass of the sample.

Using BET, RISE can analyse:

  • Specific surface, Pore size and Pore size distribution
  • according to GMP quality level or exploratory
  • on solids such as powders, tablets, porous materials, catalysts

Stability studies of product or substance performed according to GMP or exploratory

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Stability studies Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

RISE offers stability studies for quality evaluation of a product or substance during storage.
Samples are held at 25°C/60%RH, 40°C/75%RH, 5°C or -18°C in validated climate cabinets/fridge-freezers with continuous monitoring, temperature and humidity log.
Studies performed GMP according to ICH Guidelines on drug substance/product, or exploratory.

Purpose/Benefit:

Stability studies are performed on chemical substances and on products such as pharmaceuticals, food, beverages and cosmetics to map the quality of the material over time. Factors that may affect quality include temperature, humidity and light. The result of the studies can be used to determine shelf-life, re-test date or recommended storage conditions.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Representative samples of the material, with a specified quality by reference to parameters such as appearance, content, chemical purity, pH, are placed in specific environments over a selected period of time. The quality of the material is monitored during the period by sampling at certain times, the samples are analysed according to the specified quality parameters and results are compared with the original values.

RISE conducts both regulatory GMP studies according to ICH guidelines (ICH Q1A), or exploratory studies for research and development purposes.   Both short-term studies (weeks) and long-term studies (several years) are possible.

RISE can offer the following environments for stability studies:

  • 25°C±2°C / 60%±5% RH, standard
  • 40°C±2°C / 75%±5% RH, accelerated
  • 5°C±3°C, fridge
  • -20°C±5°C, freezer

Climate cabinets have controlled temperature and humidity, fridge/freezers controlled temperature. They are qualified according to GMP requirements and placed in a room only accessible to authorized personnel. Humidity and temperature are electronically logged and stored in cloud storage in a web-based system. In the event of temperature or humidity outside specified interval, the system alerts responsible personnel via e-mail or text message around the clock.

RISE can also perform several types of analyses according to GMP on sampled material, e.g. assay and purity (LC, GC, NMR), appearance, water content (KF), pH. Samples can also be sent to external laboratories.

We can also develop and validate stability-indicating analysis methods, including forced degradation where the substance/product is exposed to heat, light, acid, base and oxidizing agent to induce formation of eventual degradation products.

Micro X‑ray fluorescence (µXRF): chemical analysis and elemental spatial distribution

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Micro X-Ray Fluorescence Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Micro X-Ray Fluorescence is an important tool for the characterisation of solid organic or inorganic materials: it gives crucial information, such as composition and element distribution.

Purpose/Benefit:

Micro X-Ray Fluorescence (µXRF) is the perfect tool for sample characterisation: the X-ray beam, focused to a spot of 20 µm in diameter, gives information about composition or elemental distribution.

The technology is of interest for many research areas, such as materials science (metals, cement and concrete, semiconductors, …), environmental science (sediment and soil, recycled materials, contamination analysis, …), electronics (printed circuit boards, chips.), surface treatments, geology and archaeology.

The chemical composition can be measured on a specific point of interest or over a wider area or lines. The composition of homogeneous material (in form of e.g. powders) can be measured quickly.

Elemental distribution analysis provides valuable insights into the spatial variation of elements of a sample. It allows, for example, to understand how a material’s composition changes in response to its environment. For instance, μ‑XRF mapping can visualise the distribution of substances across a concrete cross‑section, allowing us to track how these substances migrate over time. Such information is crucial for uncovering the underlying mechanisms that contribute to the degradation of concrete.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

At RISE, we use the M4 Tornado from Bruker for high-resolution elemental analysis. The instrument accommodates large samples, accepting dimensions up to 150 × 200 mm, a maximum height of 120 mm, and a weight of up to 5 kg.

For elemental mapping, a flat and well-levelled surface provides the most accurate and reliable results. RISE can assist with the necessary sample preparation to ensure optimal data quality. Point analyses can be performed on a wide range of sample types, including solids, powders, soils, and irregularly shaped objects.

During analysis, samples are scanned under a light vacuum of 20 mBar. This reduced-pressure environment enhances the detection of lighter elements. However, elements with an atomic mass lower than sodium—such as carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen—remain undetectable by the M4 Tornado.

If a sample cannot withstand vacuum conditions, it is possible to perform the measurement in ambient air. In such cases, the analysis is still feasible, but the sensitivity and precision of the results will be reduced.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The client will receive a detailed report containing:

  • the sample’s handling,
  • the data treatment
  • the results
  • explanation of what the results mean

UN, Manual of Tests and Criteria, section 33.4.6 Test N.4: Test method for self-heating substances

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Dangerous goods testing Test N.4 Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Testing according to "UN Reccomendations on the transport of dangerous goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, section 33.4.6 Test N.4: Test method for self-heating substances" evaluates a materials tendency to self-heat. The data is used for determination of safe transportation on road.

Purpose/Benefit:

Dangerous goods are items or substances that can imply a risk for health, safety, property, or the environment. Some items, which may not be harmful by itself, may become a risk when combined with other substances.

Most regulations concerning dangerous goods, such as national regulations, the IMDG Code, IATA etc. are based on the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods Model Regulations. The guidance document is developed by the United Nations to uniform national and international regulations.

Dangerous goods are divided into nine different classes, grouped by their physical and chemical properties. Through testing a packaging group is assigned, in accordance with the degree of danger they present.

CLASS       SUBSTANCE
1.          Explosive substances and articles
2.          Gases
3.          Flammable liquids
4.1        Flammable solids
4.2        Substances liable to spontaneous combustion
4.3        Substances which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases
5.1        Oxidizing substances
5.2        Organic peroxides
6.1        Toxic substances
6.2        Infectious substances
7.          Radioactive materials
8.          Corrosive substances
9.          Miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles

Testing is performed according to UN manual of Tests and Criteria - Sektion 33.4.6 - Test N.4:Test method for self-heating substances and the the generated data can be used to classify dangerous goods and to use as a basis for risk analysis and research.

When testing according to Test N.4, the material may be classified as "Not a self-heating substance", "Self-heating substance - Packing group II/Cat. 1" or "Self-heating substance - Packing group III/Cat. 2". In some cases, the material may be classified as "Not a self-heating substance" if it is transported in smaller quantities, even though the test indicates self-heating.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

In Test N.4, the material to be examined is placed inside a wire mesh basket, which is located inside an oven at a fixed elevated temperature. The temperature is then measured in the oven and at the centre of the sample over time.

An initial test is carried out in a metal wire basket with sides of 100 mm (1 dm²) and with an oven temperature of 140°C. This test shows whether the material is self-heating or not. If no self-heating occurs, the test is concluded and the material is reported as "Not a self-heating substance." If self-heating occures, an additional 1-3 tests are needed to determine the final packing group for the material. the occurrence of self-heating (temperature increase in the centre of the material > 60 °C above oven temperature) is examined at a specified oven temperature and test volume.

The definition of self-heating in Test No. 4 is that the temperature increase at the center of the material is 60°C or more above the oven temperature within 24 hours at a given oven temperature and test volume.

BET – measurement of the specific surface area of solid materials

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): BET Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

BET / gas adsorption is a powerful analytical technique for determining the specific surface area of solid, porous materials.

Purpose/Benefit:

The measurement of the specific surface area of solid or porous materials gives important information on their physical structure. The area of a material’s surface determine how that solid will interact with its environment. Many properties, such as dissolution rates, retention of moisture, and reactivity, are often correlated to a material’s surface area.

We at RISE use the BET Theory (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller theory) to measure the specific surface area. BET is one of the most widely used techniques in material characterisation.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Before performing the measurement, contaminants already adsorbed by the material (water and carbon dioxide, for example) must be removed from the solid surface. During this pretreatment, the solid is typically heated under vacuum to remove any initially adsorbed contaminants (the temperature is adapted to the material to avoid any alterations of the material). If the material is too sensitive to vacuum a flow of inert gas can be used instead.

To determine the surface area, the solid is first cooled under vacuum to cryogenic temperature using liquid nitrogen. This is because most gases and solids interact weakly at usual temperatures. The temperature of the solid sample is kept constant while an adsorbing gas is dosed to the solid in controlled increments. After each dose, the pressure is allowed to equilibrate, and the quantity of gas adsorbed is determined. The quantity of gas adsorbed is plotted as a function of pressure.  From this plot, the quantity of gas required to form a monolayer over the external surface of the solid is determined. The surface area can be calculated from the quantity of gas required to form a monolayer, using the BET theory.

To ensure the validity of the results, we analyse in parallel a reference material with a known specific surface area.

We use a Nova 800 from Anton Paar.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The client will receive a detailed report containing:
