Fire test according to CEN/TS 1187, test 2

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Fire test according to CEN/TS 1187, test 2 Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

CEN/TS 1187, test 2  - Test method for external fire exposure to roof

Purpose/Benefit:

The test method measures the roofing's ability to prevent flame spread when exposed to a burning wood crib. The product can be classified according to EN 13501-5 after testing. The class is called BROOF(t2). Test reports can be used as a basis for P marking or as part of the technical documentation when a product is CE marked.

To be able to sell a construction product in Europe, the product must be tested, classified and if possible, CE-marked in accordance with the Construction Product Regulation. To meet the technical fire requirements, there are common test methods and a common classification system, EN 13501-1, also called Euroclass. This classification system is used by all EU countries, including Norway and Iceland. In Sweden the Building Regulations, BBR, use the Euroclass system.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The test takes place inside a chamber that represents a sloping roof. The roof covering, in combination with the substrate, is mounted inside the test chamber. The tests is carried out at two different air velocity, 2 and 4 m/s. Three tests are performed at each air velocity. A wooden crib  is used as source of ignition. The test duration is 15 minutes or until the fire is extinguished or the flame has reached the upper part of the test body. During the test, the time from the test body is ignited and the time to the flame and the glow dies out. After the test, the length of damaged material is measured on the roofing and the substrate separately.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

A test report, in Swedish or English, is deliverd with the test results after testing.

EN 1021 - Fire testing of upholstered furniture

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): EN 1021 - Fire testing of upholstered furniture Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

EN 1021-1:2014 – Furniture – Assessment of the ignitability of upholstered furniture – Part 1: Ignition source smouldering cigarette.

EN 1021-2:2014 – Furniture – Assessment of the ignitability of upholstered furniture – Part 2: Ignition source match flame equivalent.

Purpose/Benefit:

The standards are used to assess the ignitability of material combinations, such as covers and fillings used in upholstered seating, when subjected to a smouldering cigarette and a match flame equivalent as ignition source.

These test methods only evaluate the ignitability of upholstery combinations. To evaluate the burning behaviour, the furniture needs to be tested in full scale with larger ignition sources.

For a upholstered furniture, the Product Safety Act applies and one of the safety risks is fire. According to the Swedish Consumer Agency, upholstered furniture sold to an individual consumer on the Swedish market must be able to withstand a glowing cigarette for a fixed time period without igniting the upholstery. The Agency then refers to the requirements according to EN 1021-1. In public environments, such as cinemas, hotels, restaurants etc., upholstered furniture should at least meet the requirements of both EN 1021-1 and EN 1021-2.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The tests are performed in a test cabinet with a calibrated air flow. Combinations of cover fabrics and filling materials used in upholstered furniture are tested. Cover fabrics can also be tested in combination with a standard PU filling. A steel test rig is mounted with the cover and filling so that a 90º angle is formed between the seat and back. The ignition sources are located in the junction between seat and back.

During the cigarette test the test assembly is not allowed to smoulder after one hour from the beginning of the test. The test assembly is also not allowed to smoulder to the extremities of the specimen.

The test assembly is subjected to a gas flame equivalent to a match flame for 15 seconds. No flaming is allowed to continue for more than 120 seconds after removal of the burner tube.

Prior to testing, all outer coverings that have been chemically treated to reduce their ignitability shall be  subjected to a water soaking and drying procedure, described in Annex D.

Investigation, evaluation and field measurements of ventilation function

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Investigation and field measurements of ventilation in buildings. Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

RISE can conduct independent investigations, evaluations and, if necessary, limited field measurements of the ventilation function in different types of buildings. Ventilation function in the form of air flows, air quality and thermal comfort, as well as heat recovery and electrical efficiency.

Purpose/Benefit:

As an independent part assist users and/or property owner in investigating, evaluating and, if necessary, making limited field measurements of the ventilation function in their buildings, usually in connections with them being uncertain or having complaints about the ventilation function. RISE does not carry out adjustments or routine ventilation checks, such as OVK, but refers such assignments to consultants who routinely perform this type of service.

Through RISE's accumulated and long-standing experience in the ventilation area (theoretical/academic as well as from laboratory tests and field assignments) we have a broad and deep knowledge of how ventilation systems work and what can be wrong and cause problems.

Many problems with indoor environment and/or high energy use are due to faults and deficiencies in the function of ventilation. There may be errors in the design as well as during the installation or in the operation and control of the system.

Many times, users or operating staff have not received enough information and knowledge about how the system works and how it should be managed.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The customer's need is identified via telephone and/or e-mail. Then an indication of price and delivery time is first given. If the customer is still interested, we may request additional documentation in the form of drawings, protocols, etc. before we write a formal quote. Since a fixed price is often difficult to give, the work is usually offered on a current hourly rate up to a maximum price.

If the quotation is accepted, a time for ocular inspection and eventual measurements is then determined in consultation with the customer. Often, an ocular examination is enough to give a statement on the function of the ventilation and any suggestions for measures. In some cases, more detailed measurements may need to be performed, either by RISE or by another actor.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Usually, the customer receives a report that describes the background, implementation and results. For shorter projects, simplified reporting can be done via e-mail, possibly with attachments in the form of pictures, tables and/or diagrams.

Delivery time:

Depending on already planned assignments, project start-up time can normally vary between 1 - 4 weeks. Depending on the scope of the project and possible need for measurements, implementation can take anywhere from a few days to several months. In the latter case, of course, not full time.

Factors that affect delivery time are coordination with other actors, e.g. sub-consultants, or that certain measurements require a certain outdoor climate or a certain internal load.

ETA - Preparation/Issuance of European Technical Assessments, and preparation of European Assessment Documents (EAD)

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): ETA – European Technical Assessment Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

RISE is a state-appointed body authorized to issue European Technical Assessments (ETAs). For products where no harmonized technical specification exists or can be fully applied, the ETA route is the way for manufacturers to CE mark their products.

Purpose/Benefit:

CE marking is the key to the entire EU market. With a CE marking, you can:

  • sell your products freely within Europe
  • clearly demonstrate that your product meets common quality and safety requirements
  • strengthen your brand through transparency and reliability

When there's no harmonized standard, an ETA is the best way to get CE marking. The ETA describes the product's features, manufacturing process, and control procedures—everything needed to give the market security and confidence.

As Sweden's Technical Assessment Body (TAB), RISE issues ETAs in all product areas. We also represent Sweden in EOTA, the European organization that develops EADs. This means that you get a partner that both drives the process and influences European guidelines.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Our work process is designed to be smooth and transparent:

  1. Request
  2. Quotation
  3. Preparation of EAD, if missing
  4. Preparation of ETA

Once all product information, manufacturing data, and control plans (FPC) are in place, we can issue an ETA.

Depending on which AVCP system the product is covered by, additional third-party review may be required. As one of Sweden's leading notified bodies, RISE can also assist with these aspects.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Once the above steps have been completed, an ETA is issued. References to ETAs are published on both the RISE website and the EOTA website.

TRIBE 2020

TRIBE 2020

The TRIBE project aspires to achieve positive behavioral change in terms of energy efficiency habits in public spaces. Its main approach is through a mobile game linked to real-time data from five pilot buildings with potentially 12,000 visitors. The game employs an interdisciplinary approach of game design, behavioral theory and energy simulation.

Teknisk utveckling, spelteori och speldesign
Completed
Design Energy
3 år
Division: Division Digital Systems and Societal Transformation

The project is based on a series of components such as energy monitoring, simulation, social studies, game design and integration of all components in a mobile game.

Through cluster analysis of users, three clusters were identified for each of the project's 5 virtualized pilot buildings. These can be used for games to characterize the effectiveness of agent-based behavior in relation to heating, cooling, lighting and the use of electrical appliances. Empirically observed and energy related behavioral patterns range from the least effective to the medium effective and the most effective, as indicated by mean values for different activities (1 = least effective, 5 = most effective).

Although games and digital games can be described as simulations, there are fundamental differences in the general approach of implementing visual games, physics simulations and technical simulations. Within games it is a requirement that feedback takes place in real time with low, perceived latency. Technical simulations, such as energy simulation in building planning, require a level of detail that today is not possible in real time. The TRIBE project advocates an approach inspired by the gaming industry where energy simulation can be segmented in pre-calculated and real-time simulation. This is like how a game "prizes" graphics and "bakes" lighting to limit real-time simulation.

The mobile game has been installed by more than 18,000 users and has received an average rating. The exact effect of increased energy efficiency could not be determined within the project's limitations, but the tools and methods in the project have proved to be reusable and relevant.

The test bed is the only facility in Sweden that has authorized and approved equipment with which to perform fire certification. It is in addition a meeting place for university or industry conducted scientific research lead by professors and post graduates, constituting a major resource for testing and developing new constructions.

In the horizontal furnace you can examine beams, floors, ceilings, baulks, ventilation dampers, filing cabinets and vessel decks. The vertical furnace offers the same examination but covering walls, doors, windows, glass sections, penetration seals, vessel bulkheads and cable functionality.

The testing equipment is utilized by product developers from a wide range of fields where issues regarding fire can arise, not to mention importers looking to certify products. Around 30-40% of the tested products are manufactured outside of Sweden.

World-leading treatment of flue gas and extinguishing water

The fire test furnaces are part of the fire lab in Borås that works sustainably. Flue gas and extinguishing water from the entire lab are handled in a complicated treatment plant. Particles from smoke and toxic parts of extinguishing water are separated and placed in landfills.

Mobile work platforms for our customers

To offer a safe and easy-to-work work environment, there are height-adjustable platforms that belong to our workplaces for mounting vertical products and structures. Our customers, who are always responsible for assembling their test specimen, appreciate our workplaces and believe that the platforms also provide a faster assembly, which reduces their labor costs.

Fire curves and load

Our customers meet different fire requirements depending on which market they operate in. We have developed the furnaces so that they can be controlled according to everything from the lowest temperature curves, for e.g. fire ventilators, to the toughest, for e.g. tunnel products called RWS.

Rigs with hydraulic systems belonging to the furnaces can apply load to structures so that they are evaluated exposed to fire under load. Load-bearing floors and load-bearing walls are evaluated in this way. Our load system for the horizontal furnace is very flexible and each point that is loaded can be controlled separately during the same test.
