Rock mechanical testing

As infrastructure projects grow in size, higher utilization of the rock material is required to keep building costs down while maintaining security. Dimensioning models and calculation, which can be used, for example in planning require detailed knowledge of rock mechanics and the properties of different rock materials.

Purpose

In our rock mechanical laboratory there is equipment for rock mechanical testing which in some parts is unique in the country. This gives the opportunity to be able to carry out tests, for example in connection with the construction of infrastructure projects or for purely research purposes.

We can offer different testing methods. In addition to these, it is possible to do special tests as desired, as there is a wide range of mechanical testing equipment and extensive testing expertise in the various laboratories.

Among other things, we have carried out a large assignment for Svensk Kärnbränslehaltning AB (SKB) concerning advanced rock mechanical testing in connection with the design of the work on site investigations for the storage of spent nuclear fuel. Since then, SKB has asked for new knowledge about the mechanical properties of the rock materials. RISE has subsequently developed certain parts of the test methods to obtain new types and improved results.

Method

We carry out many methods based on ASTM and ISRM standards. Upon request, we can incorporate more methods as we have a wide equipment bank. Our equipment is adapted for rock mechanics testing of high quality. We can perform uniaxial compression tests, triaxial compression tests, indirect tensile tests (brazilian tests), direct tensile tests, point load strength, cerchar abrasivity test, density, porosity, water content, normal load and direct shear tests, unaxial and triaxial fracture behavior etc.

We can solve transport between drilling site and RISE laboratory in Borås.

We can also drill cores from stones for testing.

The work include both accredited and non-accredited testing methods. The scope of accreditation is available upon request – please feel free to contact us for more information.

Deliveries

We deliver report, diagram and pictures before and after testing with white background.
