RISE is strengthening its expertise in biotechnology and process engineering

22 October 2025, 13:38

RISE in Örnsköldsvik is continuing to grow and is now strengthening the team with new expertise. Srija Balachandran joined RISE Processum AB as a research and development engineer within the Innovation systems group in early October.

Srija holds a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from India and a Master's in Chemical Engineering for Energy and the Environment from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden. She is set to complete her PhD in Bioscience Engineering at Ghent University in Belgium shortly.

Combining technical excellence with a strong focus on sustainability, Srija's role involves working with process simulations of separation and purification technologies using Aspen Plus, as well as conducting techno-economic and life cycle analyses within the biorefinery domain.

“RISE focus on biorefinery development and sustainable growth aligns perfectly with my interests and professional background. I look forward to contributing to the development of sustainable and economically viable processes for the bioeconomy of the future,” says Srija.

She is already involved in several projects, including SPLENDOR, DELICIOUS and OLinWASTE, as well as initiatives related to alternative growing media for the forestry sector.

“We are very pleased to welcome Srija to the team. Her expertise in process simulations and system analysis will enhance our ability to develop sustainable solutions for future biorefineries. Her international experience and interdisciplinary background will be valuable assets for the whole cluster,” says Johan Börjesson, Head of the Innovation Systems Group at RISE Processum AB.
