Biotech initiative creates the art of the future
21 March 2024, 14:52
How can we accelerate the development of new bio-based innovations and find new value chains? In August, RISE in Örnsköldsvik, together with Innovationsbolaget and Cass Materials AB, is organizing the Creative Biotech Workshop. A completely new initiative that will bring together science, art and creativity and is led by entrepreneur and creative researcher Gary Cass.
The world is facing a major transition when it comes to replacing fossil raw materials with bio-based ones. Örnsköldsvik continues to grow as a node for both research and development of bio-based alternatives. With a joint effort, the purpose of this workshop is to introduce artists to the world of biotechnology with the aim of creating new artistic works that will create a dialog and a critical awareness of biotechnology. The Creative Biotech Workshop is four days long and is aimed at artists and creators both locally, nationally and from other Nordic countries.
New partnerships to turn good ideas into reality
“Creative encounters are an important aspect of innovation. This is an exciting way for us to open up new avenues and find new ideas for how we can work with biotechnology in cultural and creative industries. We hope that this can provide a new view of the possibilities of research and open up new collaborations both locally and internationally and how we can work together," says Helena Näsström, innovation manager at RISE in Örnsköldsvik.
Gary Cass leads the workshop and has extensive experience of working with innovations in bio-based materials, including recycled textiles from the fashion industry. Cass has worked with various actors in the Örnsköldsvik region since 2018 and is moving his entire business from Australia to Örnsköldsvik in 2022 to develop bio-based innovations.
