Biocompost innovation is leading the way in the sustainable use of biofertilisers

11 June 2025, 14:05

Based in Västernorrland, Biocompost is leading the way towards the sustainable use of biofertilisers thanks to its innovative technology and expertise. Using their biocompost drums, organic waste is transformed into compost, a process that reduces climate impact while creating a versatile product. They are a welcome addition to the Processum Biorefinery Cluster.

With a clear focus on environmental benefits and technical efficiency, Biocompost has established itself as a pioneer in the biological treatment of organic waste. Using a closed system of compost drums, food and garden waste, along with other biological materials, are converted into nutrient-rich compost and biofertiliser, which can then be returned to the soil. As society improves its waste sorting practices, we are moving towards a circular system in which materials that were previously considered waste can be refined into valuable soil improvers. With its in-house expertise and flexible product system, Biocompost is poised to revolutionise the organic waste recycling market.

A closed process that is good for the environment, people and soil

Biocompost's processes are designed to be good for the environment and efficient. Organic material is treated in closed, controlled systems (biocompost drums) which reduce the environmental impact at every stage. Today, Biocompost is working on projects to replace peat, find alternatives to synthetic fertilisers, and reduce the spread of invasive species. But the technology can be used in many other ways too.

The closed treatment makes the waste hygienic, getting rid of pathogens and unwanted substances. At the same time, emissions – including smells and greenhouse gases – can be effectively captured and controlled. This method also helps to keep the material's nutrients and structure, making it good for using again in farming. The result is a clean, safe product that farmers and landowners really want.

Specialised solutions for optimised composting

Biocompost’s expertise extends well beyond the production facility. The company provides advice to municipalities, farmers, and businesses on how to handle organic waste more smartly and sustainably. Through training, analysis, and customized solutions, value is created all the way from waste collection to soil improvement. Biocompost doesn’t just address today’s needs—they’re looking ahead.

"We want to be involved in the whole process. We know how to mix and match materials to suit each customer's needs and create the perfect composting recipe. Our composting know-how is our top priority, with our products coming a close second. By investing in research, digital traceability, and integrating with biogas production, we're constantly developing sustainable systems that can be scaled up both nationally and internationally,” says Thomas Storsjö at Biocompost.

A major environmental challenge is reducing methane emissions from the storage of biological waste. By shortening storage time and quickly stabilising material in compost drums, these emissions can be significantly reduced. Together with Mid Sweden University, Biocompost is currently participating in a project to reduce methane emissions from both biological waste and old fiberbanks—sediment from former pulp industry operations. Biocompost grows through collaboration – now part of the Processum biorefinery cluster

Biocompost has recently taken the next step in its development by joining Processum’s innovation cluster for bio-based solutions. This cluster brings together companies, research organisations and public bodies to co-create sustainable materials, processes and business models.

“Welcoming Biocompost into our cluster strengthens the entire bio-based solutions value chain — from waste collection to nutrient return to the soil. Their expertise is a valuable asset for the other participants, and they themselves will gain new opportunities to grow, innovate and shape the future,” says Johan Börjesson, Head of Innovation Systems at RISE.
