Photometry and radiometry

RISE is Sweden's NMI (National Metrology Institute) and is, according to the Swedish constitution, responsible for the fundamental measurement quantities in the International System of Units, SI.

The National Laboratory for Photometry and Radiometry is a leading expertise in optical measurements. We perform calibrations, measurements, examinations and research in the optical wavelength range, i.e. ultraviolet, visible and infrared.

Optical measurements means the techniques used to measure optical radiant power. The measurement of absolute radiant flux is called radiometry and involves the whole optical wavelength range. It uses units such as Watt and Joule. Photometry is the measurement of light with regards to how humans experience it. This is done by scaling the radiometric measurements by the sensitivity of the human eye. Photometry uses the photometric units, lumen, candela och lux.

Our expertise includes:

  • Light sources
  • Instruments for measuring light
  • Optical properties of materials and surfaces
  • Lighting
  • Light environment
  • Experience of light

We also contribute to research projects, both to develop the metrological knowledge base and also in projects where optical measurements are a vital part of problem solving.

Calibration of pyranometer at The National Laboratory

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Calibration of pyranometer at The National Laboratory Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The National Laboratory for Photometry and Radiometry offers calibration of pyranometers.

Purpose/Benefit:

The national laboratories are responsible for maintaining the national reference standards for each measurement quantity and  spreading metrological competens and traceability to industry and society at large. The national reference standards are the highest level of traceability in Sweden.

A calibration performed at a national laboratory fullfils all typical traceability and accreditation requirements that commonly exist in industry and society at large.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The calibration is performed indoors against a Hg(Xe)-lamp in comparison with a reference pyranometer. The method requires that the device under test and the reference match each other in make and model as closely as possible which puts some restraints on which types of pyranometers the method can be applied to. For example, photo diode pyranometers cannot be calibrated with this method. The calibration is performed at 500 W/m2. The calibration can be performed year round.

A calibration can also be performed directly against the sun as a source in compariton with a reference pyrheliometer. This method does not have the same restrictions on matching models. It does require a sunny and cloudless day during a time of year when the sun is high enough in the sky.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The calibration results are reported in a digital calibration certificate in Swedish or English which states that the calibration was performed at a national laboratory.

The National Laboratory for Volume and F
Flow

RISE is Sweden's NMI (National Metrology Institute) and is, according to the Swedish constitution, responsible for the fundamental measurement quantities in the International System of Units, SI.

The National Laboratory for Volume and Flow has expertise in flow measurement technology, which means measurement of fluid flows and determination of volume in different vessels such as tanks, volume vessels, glass flasks and pipettes. At the National Laboratory, we can handle flows from 26,000 liters per minute down to 5 nanoliters per minute* (equivalent to 1 liter in 500 years, 1 drop in 7 days, 0.00000000025 m3/h). Extremely low flows have, for example, applications in the development and calibration of medical equipment.

Correct measurements and knowledge of possible deviations and appropriate calibration intervals reduce the risk of incorrect measurements and we can help contribute to direct savings for the industry and society.

Technological development is supported by participating in research and development projects related to volume and flow measurement technology. As part of RISE, we can be an independent party that can coordinate cooperation between different companies and actors in projects and tests.

The National Laboratory for Volume and Flow at RISE has the country's widest and most accurate resources for measurements and calibrations in the area. We are constantly working to develop and bring forth measurement methods to meet the industry's and society's demands for traceability with the measurement uncertainty required by different applications. This is done both within national and international research projects, and often in collaboration with other organizations and stakeholders.

We are also able to assist with metrological expertise either in investigations of different types of demands regarding measurement, questions concerning the quality of measurements or education in equipment, measurement and measurement uncertainty analysis.

The National Laboratory for Temperature

The National Laboratory for Temperature
Temperature

RISE is Sweden's NMI (National Metrology Institute) and, according to the Swedish constitution, is responsible for the central measurement quantities in the International System of Units, SI.

The National Laboratory for Temperature has the country's widest and most accurate resources for measurements and calibrations within the temperature range. We work continuously to develop and bring out measurement methods in order to meet the industry's need for traceability with the measurement uncertainty that different applications require. This is done both within national and international research projects, often in collaboration with other organizations and stakeholders.

Due to practical difficulties in realizing the thermodynamic temperature scale, a more practically useful scale, the international temperature scale (ITS-90) has been established internationally, which, with a series of specified fixed points, available reference thermometers and calculation methods as accurate as possible that adhere to the thermodynamic scale. All temperature measurements and calibrations are thus normally made against ITS-90.

We have the opportunity to assist with metrology expertise in the temperature range, whether it concerns investigations on different types of measurement needs, issues relating to the quality of measurements or educational needs in measurement and measurement uncertainty analysis.
