The basis for a meter being the same length in Stockholm as in Tokyo, and for efficient world trade, research and industry, is traceability through international comparisons and national standards. Without assured traceability, companies risk producing faulty products, incurring increased costs and losing the confidence of their customers. National measurement laboratories represent the top level of the metrological chain, carrying out measurements with the lowest possible uncertainty, which enables the calibration of all measuring instruments throughout the traceability pyramid. As Sweden's National Metrology Institute, RISE operates 14 national measurement laboratories covering 32 physical quantities, and represents Sweden in international metrology contexts through EURAMET and the Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA).

RISE's national measurement laboratories offer advanced calibrations with the lowest possible measurement uncertainties for those requiring the highest level of metrology. We maintain national standards such as the national kilogram, the UTC(SP) timescale and fixed-point cells for temperature, and we can calibrate your reference instruments directly against these. Through long-term research and development, we create new measurement methods and standards that are adapted to future technology and industrial needs. We also carry out international comparison measurements to ensure that Swedish calibration certificates are recognised globally, facilitating your exports and international collaborations.

Establishing traceability from the Kibble balance

Spårbarhet från Kibblevågen
Preliminary simulation of gravity self-attraction in the Kibble laboratory

In 2019, the kilogram was redefined with Planck’s constant replacing the physical prototype in Paris. The new realization uses a Kibble balance, linking electrical and mechanical quantities through a precisely balanced force. To achieve the highest possible accuracy, a very precise understanding of the gravity in the lab most be acquired.

In 2019, the kilogram was redefined from the international prototype in Paris to Planck’s constant. In practice, the kilogram is realized according to the new definition using a Kibble balance, in which a magnetic force is balanced against the gravitational force arising from the test mass. The national metrology institutes for mass and for electrical quantities are collaborating with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL, United Kingdom) to develop a next‑generation Kibble balance to realize the kilogram. Since the principle relies on force equilibrium, it is necessary to know the gravitational acceleration very precisely in order to determine the mass.

This project aims to establish traceability from the force realization provided by the Kibble balance currently being developed by NPL and RISE. The focus is on the mathematical modelling required for this traceability and on how measurement uncertainty propagates through these models. This includes precise modelling of gravity in the Kibble laboratory for the conversion from force to mass, as well as the development of a new comparison scheme to establish traceability from the mass in the Kibble balance to the other mass standards used by the national metrology institute for mass in its calibration activities.

Our national laboratories

Submitted by MariaM-admin on

With its deep expertise in metrology, RISE maintains national standards and develops measurement methods for the industry of the future. Our expertise covers 32 physical quantities and ensures that Swedish measurements are world class.

The National Laboratory for Chemical Metrology

National Laboratory Chemical Metrology
The National Laboratory for Chemical Metrology

RISE is the National Metrology Institute of Sweden and is responsible, through its National Laboratories, for the fundamental measurement quantities in the International System of Units SI.

At the national laboratory for chemical metrology, we work with measurement quality and quality assurance in the chemical area. We develop sampling and measurement methods and guidelines for measurements from Eurachem, among others. Collaboration with other laboratories, interest organisations and authorities around the world is important to promote the development of a structured metrology system in the field of chemistry, both nationally and internationally.

International comparison measurements

We are constantly developing measurement methods that respond to industry and society's needs for quality-assured measurements. We conduct experimental activities around reference measurements, for example determination of elements, characterisation of ultrapure water and in energy gases. We collaborate with other leading institutes worldwide in various research projects and regularly participate in international comparison measurements to ensure the quality of our measurements.

We offer:

  • Quality assured measurements in energy gases.
  • Training of laboratory personnel through courses in measurement uncertainty, method validation and quality control.
  • Development of methods for elemental analysis, including specification of constituent elements.
  • Calibration of conductivity instruments for ultrapure water and liquids with high salinity.

A free measurement database provides better structure, control and quality.

Calibration of pyrometer

All calibration customers at RISE now have access to a comprehensive register of measuring devices. As well as the devices calibrated by RISE, customers can add their own devices, calibration records and manuals.

The new measurement device register from RISE is a great tool for all calibration customers, offering an effective way to manage data on calibrations and self-checks. The new feature is that you can now also record calibrations and measurements performed elsewhere or internally.

"This system has many advantages. It is comprehensive, easy to understand and user-friendly. What's more, it's completely free for our customers,' says Mats Olsson, Research and Business Development Manager for the Control and Calibration Department at RISE.

Registers provide a good overview.

The measuring device register can be used to store all of the company's calibration certificates and associated documents for measuring devices, as well as evaluations. Customers can also confirm here that the measuring device meets the requirements for their measuring system. The register provides a clear overview of which instruments have been calibrated and when the next calibration is due.

"In addition to a notification in the system itself, you will now also receive an email telling you when it is time to calibrate. You can also book a new calibration appointment with a single click at the same time," says Petra Lantz, Head of the Control and Calibration Department at RISE.

An efficient system for collecting data.

Another advantage of the new measuring device register is that it efficiently collects all the data required for quality audits in one place.

“Overall, this provides our customers with better structure, control and quality in their measurement results, which ultimately contributes to safer and more reliable production,” says Petra Lantz.
