The National Laboratory for Mass

The National Laboratory for Mass
National kilogram

RISE is the National Metrology Institute of Sweden and is responsible, through its National Laboratories, for the fundamental measurement quantities in the International System of Units (SI).

At the National Laboratory for Mass, we work to maintain traceability for all weighing carried out in industries such as food, pharmaceutical, and manufacturing. Traceable measurements are essential to ensure that products are reliable and contain the correct amounts of, for example, food and medicine.

The foundation of the traceability chain is the Swedish national kilogram, which, despite the 2019 redefinition of the kilogram, is still used as a highly accurate reference standard. We are conducting research to develop a Kibble balance to realize the kilogram according to the latest definition in the future. We can calibrate weights ranging from 1 mg to 5 tons.

What do we do?

  • Maintain traceability in the field of mass
  • Calibrate weights according to the highest international standards (OIML R111-1, E1), as well as pressure weights and dead weights
  • Provide advice and training in the field of calibration for weighing applications
  • Conduct research and development, both nationally and in international collaboration projects
  • Participate in international comparison measurements to maintain the highest measurement quality
  • Contribute to standardization work

  • Wavelength of fiber optical sources (600 nm - 1550 nm)
  • Wavelength of optical spectrum analysers (600 nm - 1550 nm)

Calibration of power meters are performed in comparison with a reference radiometer. Calibration of wavelength is performed using absorption lines in a gas cell.

We also offer accredited calibration of:

  • Length scale for OTDR
  • Loss deviation for OTDR
  • Pulse characteristics for OTDR

The OTDR calibrations are not performed as part of the national laboratory but have separate accreditations.

We are available for consultation with regard to fiber optic measurements and can also help with validation of equipment or measurement methods.

Calibration radiometers & optical detectors at The National Laboratory

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Calibration radiometers & optical detectors at The National Laboratory Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The National Laboratory for Photometry and Radiometry offers calibration of radiometers, laser power meters and optical detectors.

Purpose/Benefit:

The national laboratories are responsible for maintaining the national reference standards for each measurement quantity and  spreading metrological competens and traceability to industry and society at large. The national reference standards are the highest level of traceability in Sweden.

A calibration performed at a national laboratory fullfils all typical traceability and accreditation requirements that commonly exist in industry and society at large.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Calibration is performed in accordance with existing internations standards and recommendations.

A calibration consists of two parts, spectral responsivity and absolute responsivity.

Spectral responsivity involves the detector being exposed to light at varying wavelengths from a monochromator in comparison with a reference detector. The calibration can span responsivities from 250 nm to 1600 nm. Typical test objects include silicon, germanium and InGaAs detectors.

Absolute responsivity is calibrationed with laser light at certain wavelengths e.g. 514 nm, 633 nm or 1550 nm. Either a reference detector or a reference radiometer is used as a reference. Radiometers are typically calibrated at 200 µW up to 10 mW. Laser power meters can be calibrated up to around 800 mW.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The calibration results are reported in a digital calibration certificate in Swedish or English which states that the calibration was performed at a national laboratory.

The National Laboratory for Length and Dimensional Metrology offers calibration of HeNe-Laser sources at 633 nm.

Purpose/Benefit:

The national laboratories are responsible for maintaining the national reference standards for each measurement quantity and spreading metrological competence and traceability to industry and society at large. The national reference standards are the highest level of traceability in Sweden.

A calibration performed at a national laboratory fulfils all typical traceability and accreditation requirements that commonly exist in industry and society at large.

Calibration of luminance meter at The National Laboratory

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Calibration of luminance meter at The National Laboratory Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The National Laboratory for Photometry and Radiometry offers calibration of any type of luminance meter or photometer.

The calibration is performed according to existing international standards and recommendations.

The calibration is performed against luminance source with CIE Standard Illuminant A (2856K) and can be performed at any luminance level from 0,01 cd/m2 to 500000 cd/m2. Instruments that measure luminance in foot-lamberts can also be calibrated. The standard service has a measurement uncertainty of 3% as a base but the measurement uncertainty can increase depending on the properties of the device under test as well as for luminance levels above 200000 cd/m2. If a lower measurement uncertainty is required then that can be discussed as a speciality service.

The calibration takes place at the laboratory for photometry and radiometry in Borås.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The calibration results are reported in a digital calibration certificate in Swedish or English which states that the calibration was performed at a national laboratory.

Calibration of time and frequency via GNSS at The National Laboratory

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Calibration of time and frequency via GNSS at The National Laboratory Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The National Laboratory for time and frequency offers calibration of time and frequence via GNSS.

Purpose/Benefit:

The National Laboratories have the task to maintain the national references standards for each measurement quantity and to spread metrological competens and traceability to industry and society at large. The national reference standards are the highest level of traceability in Sweden.

A calibration performed at a National Laboratory fullfils all typical traceability and accreditation requirements that commonly exist in industry and society at large.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

For calibration of more accurate time and frequency standards, we offer on-site calibration using global navigation satellite systems, GNSS (e.g. GPS and Galileo) as an intermediate reference. This requires installation of equipment for reception and storage of data from the GNSS.

The method, known as GNSS Common View, is similar to that used by RISE to provide international traceability.

We can also verify and calibrate the time synchronising and positioning performance of different types of GNSS receivers.

The method involves calibrating a frequency standard, clock or time scale (DUT) relative to UTC(SP) by means of simultaneous measurements of GPS satellite signals performed by both the customer and by RISE.  The use of common satellites eliminates many of the common measurement errors.  In addition, the changes that are observed in the time intervals [UTC(SP) – DUT] provide an estimate of the DUT frequency relative to UTC(SP).

All instrumentation needed (GNSS receiver, time interval counter, software, etc.) can be supplied and installed by RISE. For continuous monitoring over a longer period of time, equipment can be rented from RISE.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

For continuous monitoring, the measured values registered by the customer are transferred automatically to RISE.  The calculation of the results are performed automatically by RISE with the results being sent to the customer by (for example) e-mail.  The results can also be provided through a webpage. How often this is done is agreed with the customer, but can in principle be done on a daily basis.  The accuracy of frequency measurement, averaged over a day, is better than ±1E-13, but does depend on the quality of the DUT.
