Calibration of squareness standards is performed up to 500 mm. The calibration is performed against a reference standard on a surface plate. Indicating instruments such as universal protractors, protractors, digital protractors and water levels are calibrated using a sine bar and gauge blocks, alternatively with an indexing table.  Accurate inclinometers from 0,001 mm/m are calibrated on a sine bar of diabase with a laser interferometer as reference.

The National Laboratory for Length and Dimensional Metrology calibrates several different types of standards for accurate adjustments of measuring machines. Common standards are for example setting rings (internal diameter), reference gauges (external diameter) and pin gauges, as well as tolerance gauges for control of holes, axles or threads. Additionally, we calibrate customized masters for specific purposes.

Most of these objects are calibrated in a single axis measuring machine with two-point measurement. The contact surfaces of the measurement tips are accurately defined with regards to size and form, which is important for the reproducibility.

We calibrate many different types of length gauges, for example linear gauges, linear potentiometers, indicators, dial test indicators and string potentiometers, where the resolution could be as low as 0,01 µm. The length gauges can be with or without measuring force and showing the result in mm (µm) or voltage (mV). We also perform calibration of gauges with lower measuring accuracy and/or longer measuring range up to 2 meters for example string/wire linear potentiometers.

Laser rangefinders are one-dimensional length measuring instruments with a measuring range ranging from a few centimetres, to several tens of metres. The measurement principle for most laser rangefinders is the time-of-flight method. In short, the time it takes for a pulse of light to return to the rangefinder is used to calculate the distance.

We offer calibration of laser rangefinders with varying resolution and with a range of up to 50 m. If necessary, we can also develop customized solutions to suit your needs.

We perform calibration of most kinds of measuring tapes on the market. Our routine calibration at 20 °C includes ten measuring points evenly distributed over the tape. Off course we can calibrate other points on customer requests. We can calibrate each dm up to 5 m and after that every half meter. We calibrate each meter on dipping tapes and ullage level gauges as standard.

Measuring tapes can be made of different materials for example steel and nylon and with different tension forces, normally 50 N. The graduation can start 100 mm in (Type A), from the start of the hook (Type B) or from the hook (Type C). It’s very important that measuring tape with tension force have the same force at use as during the calibration, otherwise the corrections won’t be correct. If the measuring tape is used at other temperature or measuring force than marked at the tape, the length measurements should be corrected.

PI tapes are calibrated due to a different method and other measuring points than usual measuring tapes. This will be described in the certificate.

Measuring tapes are made in different tolerance classes, mainly due to SS 641112, SS 641113 and STAFS 2016:9.

The tolerance grade specifies the maximum allowed deviation on the specified type of measuring tape, but doesn’t say anything about the individual tape. The only way to find out the deviation on a specific tape is by calibration. The calibration is performed without any consideration regarding tolerance class.

Gauge blocks are the universal standards that makes it possible to transfer the definition of the metre to a solid standard. We offer calibration of gauge blocks from 0,1 mm -1000 mm, made by steel, tungsten carbide or ceramic materials within three different uncertainty levels. Interferometrical calibration of gauge blocks is our most accurate measuring method, and a direct application of the definition of the central length of a gauge block. The gauge block is wrung to the plane surface of an auxiliary plate and the central length is defined as the perpendicular distance between the surface of the platen and the middle point of the gauge block's top surface. To determine this distance we are using several, different wave lengths of light.

Interferometrical measurements (method “A”) are used when the best accuracy is needed. One typical application is gauge blocks used as standards for mechanical calibration of other gauge blocks. Interferometrical calibration requires very high-quality gauge blocks. The gauge blocks should fulfil grade K according to EN ISO 3650 and have burr free measuring faces.

When the accuracy needed is slightly lower, the gauge block can be measured by mechanical comparison. This method is based on comparison between a standard gauge block and a customer gauge block. We offer two accuracy levels, methods B and C. We are able to calibrate the central length and the length at the four corners for all metric standard lengths from 0,1- 500 mm. That makes it possible to determine the variation in length. For gauge blocks above 500 mm to 1000 mm only the central length is measured.

Method B is intended mainly for gauge blocks used in a laboratory, where high accuracy is needed. Mostly gauge blocks that fulfil Grade 0 or 1, according to EN ISO 3650.  

Method C is mostly used for gauge blocks used in an industrial environment, for example to calibrate handheld measuring tools. Mostly gauge blocks that fulfil Grade 1 or 2, according to EN ISO 3650.

We have a unique equipment for calibrating IR pyrometers in the range -20 ° C to 1600 ° C, with measurement uncertainties better than 0.5 ° C.

Measurements in Black Body Radiators

The calibrations are performed by measurements in black-body radiators of the type heat-pipe with water, cesium and respectively. sodium or in commercial black body radiators. The black body jets are designed as a conical bottom cylinder or as a sphere, giving emissivities very close to the ideal black body = 1. The pyrometer to be calibrated is directed towards the black body radiator and the pyrometer indication is noted. The temperature in black-body radiators of the heat-pipe type is determined by a resistance thermometer or thermocouple, while the temperature in other black bodies is obtained from one or more of RISE's pyrometer norms.

Heat Pipe

The heat pipe consists of a closed, double-walled tube filled with a substance that evaporates in the heat pipe's working area. The pipe whose one end is terminated with a cone (120 °) is placed in a horizontal tube furnace with temperature control. When the furnace has heated the heat pipe to the desired temperature, the temperature gradients are equalized by the heat transport of the steam. In the hot portions the filling is evaporated whereby heat is bonded and in the colder portions the steam is condensed into liquid which is transported back by capillary action in an inlaid 'wick'.

Calibration by comparison

Industrial IR pyrometers and two-color pyrometers are calibrated by comparison in our black body radiators with our pyrometer norms.

Comparative calibration of liquid-in-glass thermometers, resistance thermometers, thermocouples and digital temperature gauges. In comparative calibration, liquid baths and ovens are used to provide a stable measurement environment.

We compare calibration to most types of thermometers including digital thermometers and liquid-in-glass thermometers. We have different types of thermostated calibration baths that cover the area
-100 ° C to 550 ° C. Thermocouples are also calibrated in electric tubes up to 1200 ° C.

At present, RISE can realize the following eleven fixed points

• The triple points for water, argon and mercury
• The freezing points for indium, tin, zinc, aluminum, silver, gold and copper
• The melting point for gallium.

This means that RISE has the opportunity to directly reproduce the temperature scale according to ITS-90 in the entire range -189.3442 ° C to 2600 ° C.

Cell type fixing points

All fixing points are of cell type, ie a metal crucible, where the thermometer is inserted into a protective tube surrounded by the pure metal.

The thread method provides calibration up to 1600 ° C

We calibrate platinum-based thermocouples in both fixed-point cells and according to the so-called wire method. In the wire method, gold and palladium wires are melted in a tube furnace so that certain plateaus in the thermo-voltage curve are created, which allows calibration up to 1600 ° C.
