Timber construction can be further developed and become more resource-efficient, sustainable and competitive if one utilizes the strength of different frame systems that are joined and optimized when larger and more complex buildings are to be built. It would mean a new toolbox for architects and designers to start from, which provides new opportunities for designing and optimizing the load-bearing frame.

Traditionally, today's hospitals are built in concrete and steel. Using timber in the frame is still a challenge as there is a lack of both familiarity and established guidelines. Demands to change towards more sustainable construction are increasing, but still cannot be justified to use unproven technology in hospital projects.

The project evaluates the requirements that exist for different types of operations in a hospital from a timber construction perspective. Possibilities and challenges for timber construction are mapped in parallel with the cases where it is not possible to use timber. Based on the challenge of building a hospital with a timber frame, a fictitious and limited design exercise is carried out to test the design and construction of a hospital by combining different existing timber building systems.

The title of the application at Vinnova The Optimized Complex Wooden Structures of the Future.  The project working title in progress HiT - Health in Timber.

How additive manufacturing transformed Nordholms

Anders och Simon Hygrell, Nordholms Photo: Camilla Johansson, IUC Väst

In the spring of 2023, Nordholms on the Swedish westcoast, hesitantly opened their eyes to the potential benefits of additive manufacturing. A speedy implementation came to completely revolutionize their production. What happened?

Nordholms Industriinstallationer is a comprehensive supplier in the industrial machinery and equipment industry, specializing in welded industrial components and process modules. Over the years, they have delivered customized modules, pipe installations, and pipe details to customers in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food, and nuclear power industries. Additive manufacturing, or 3D printing as it is commonly known, was not on their radar until they one day were invited to participate in the RISE-coordinated project, 3D-Action.

"I have to admit that I wasn't very interested when I first heard about the project. However, thanks to the enthusiasm and inspiration from IUC Väst, I was convinced to give it a chance. The project included plans for five training days, the first one being a visit to RISE. There, I saw the potential of 3D printing," says Anders Hygrell, co-owner of the family business Nordholms.

The first encounter with additive manufacturing made a significant impression on Anders Hygrell.

"I was convinced that it was something we needed to incorporate into our business, and ordered our first 3D printer the following day. The decision proved to be a sound investment that since has enabled numerous innovative solutions."

Increased ability to tailor solutions

Nordholms' venture into additive manufacturing stemmed from their need to manufacture prototypes and industrial components in a more flexible and efficient manner. The technology has enabled the creation of smart and innovative product supports and aids that facilitate the manufacturing process. Their enhanced ability to customize solutions has given them a competitive advantage in a rapidly changing manufacturing industry.

"We continue to expand our capacity and have invested in several 3D printers. We constantly strive to explore new materials and techniques to offer our customers even more diverse and tailored solutions," says Anders Hygrell.

He actively encourages the staff to explore and experiment freely, creating a creative and stimulating atmosphere that nurtures new ideas. To Nordholms, the implementation of additive manufacturing has been a success story, and Anders Hygrell sees no reason why other small and medium-sized enterprises should hesitate to embark on the same journey.

"All you need is a CAD program and someone with ideas. Then you should be aware that inaccuracies and less successful prints will occur. By trying different things and learning from your mistakes you get the opportunity to evolve and find the best solutions," he says.

He recons the participation in 3D-Action has been beneficial.

"The collaboration with IUC Väst and RISE has been invaluable to us. It has given us an insight into different technologies and techniques; their advantages and limitations. We have also been able to try different materials and filaments, which has broadened our knowledge and facilitated new innovations."

About 3D-Action

The 3D-Action project (active from 2021 to 2023) was run by RISE in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborgs Tekniska College, IDC West, IUC Sweden, IUC Sjuhärad and IUC Väst. Its primary objective was to raise awareness and knowledge about additive manufacturing and its benefits for small and medium-sized companies in the Västra Götaland region. 3D-Action was funded by the European Regional Development Fund, and the Västra Götaland region (VGR).

Based on the experiences from 3D-Action, RISE and partners launched the project 3D-Action 2.0 in January 2024. Are you looking to expand your knowledge of 3D printing, or in need of assistance transitioning to additive manufacturing? Learn more about the project here.

Support for innovative start-ups and scale-ups in ImpactTech

Support for innovative SME

Innovative start-ups and scale-ups with disruptive and scalable solutions play a crucial role in the transition to a sustainable society. Through RISE expertise, infrastructure and networks in the innovation system, we work in close collaboration with these companies and support them in taking their next development step. RISE's offer is of particular interest for DeepTech companies, where our expertise and technical infrastructure are especially valuable.

We find and attract funding together with the company, but also offer unique capacity in the form of expertise and test beds. In this way, we reduce the time to launch, lower the risk and help create competitive companies for an international market.

The offer is particularly strong in climate-tech which includes but is not limited to sustainable energy and energy storage, future food and agriculture, new materials and circular solutions within bioeconomy. We also work closely with the most innovative companies in HealthTech and DeepTech.

Guidance and support through the funding landscape

For innovation within ClimateTech, HealthTech and DeepTech, there is a very extensive financing landscape, which can, however, be difficult for the individual company to orientate within. RISE offers guidance to the right financing tools and acts as an advisor in the preparation of applications for public support, and in some situations can also facilitate guidance to private investors.

The type of soft funding available depends on the stage of maturity.

  • In the very early stages, there are smaller calls (0.3-0.5 MSEK), often with a high level of support (100%)
  • When the company is ready to verify its solution with the customer, there are slightly larger calls (3-5 MSEK), often with a 50% level of support
  • For some types of innovations, such as various industrial solutions, large-scale demonstration is required, which can be very capital-intensive - here it is possible to apply for very large grants, often with a 45% level of support

Leading technical expertise and test beds

RISE's leading expertise facilitates the development journey towards commercialisation and industrialisation. Supported by our infrastructure, our experts complement and fill in capacity gaps in the company that is about to take its next development step. Quite simply, RISE can act as the link between the laboratory and the industrial environment. For many innovative companies, it is critical to leave the lab as quickly as possible, start working on a small industrial scale and test their solution in a real-life environment.

RISE also has a central role in the innovation system with a broad network in academia, industry and society and can therefore provide companies with valuable guidance. With our broad  industry contacts, RISE can be the link between innovative start-ups/scale-ups, industrial players and large companies for the further development of new smart and radical solutions.

"As an early-stage start-up, we could not afford our own infrastructure and therefore access to an experienced technical partner like RISE Processum was highly valuable for initial process development and scale-up activities. This was essential to validate our biorefinery process for customers, partners and investors" - Thomas Baumgarten, CTO & Co-founder, Reselo AB

How does the support process work?

  • Initial counselling meeting with RISE to review the company's innovative solution, how far the company has come from various perspectives and what their next development step looks like
  • Based on this, we identify the most appropriate type or mix of funding, such as various public calls, EU funding or equity capital. We also look at whether development capacity, such as expertise or access to test beds, is lacking to enable the company to take its next development step
  • This is followed by a number of meetings to ensure that the company fulfils the criteria for a specific call and that the activities in the implementation plan are eligible
  • We also connect the company with relevant experts and test beds within RISE, which are needed for further development

Analysis of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances in food contact materials (FCM)

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Analysis of PFAS in food contact materials Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) is a class of chemicals found in, among other things, food contact materials, and they have garnered increasing attention as they are ubuiquitous, persistent and could have adverse effects on human health and the environment.

Purpose/Benefit:

Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) is a class of industrial chemicals which includes more than 4000 different compounds.  PFAS are widely used in food contact materials (FCMs) due to their water-repellent and non-stick properties. PFAS are highly persistent and bioaccumulated. Exposure to PFAS may lead to adverse effects on human health.

Currently there are no European harmonized restrictions for the use of PFAS in FCMs. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has made a new risk assessment related to the exposure of PFAS with focus on four compounds, namely perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS).

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Our laboratory of Product Safety offers testing solution for PFAS at trace level based on LC-MS/MS methods. We can help you to identify and quantify PFAS in final FCM products, semi-finished products, and raw materials. In addition to the four PFAS mentioned above, we have also the possibility to analyze other PFAS that are commonly regulated. The option to analyze particular PFAS can be added upon request from our customers. Please contact our analytical specialist for more detailed information.

Analysis of materials in contact with hygiene products and cosmetics based on guidelines for food contact materials

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Analysis of materials in contact with hygiene products Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Materials in contact with hygiene products and cosmetics are, like foodstuffs, in direct and regular contact with people, thereby necessitating strict control of which substances that can migrate. Many products are also fatty and are kept in packaged form for extended time, further tightening the requirements on the material.

Purpose/Benefit:

We offer analyses on material in contact with hygiene products and cosmetics, which can be expected to have similar, but not more strict, regulations as food contact materials (FCM). Under current legislation for cosmetic products (EC 1223/2009), there are no explicit procedures to determine the migration of forbidden or restricted substances from the packaging material, and the recommendation is to do analyses based on the guidelines for FCM (e.g. EU 10/2011).

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

An analysis package is constructed based on the material composition and intended use, in accordance with recommendations for FCM deemed the most applicable. Our available analyses include, among others, overall migration, specific migration and subsequent analysis with GC-MS or LC-MS/MS, and metal analysis using ICP-MS.

Taste enhancement of plant-based meat analogues using healthy fats

Taste enhancement of PBMA:s with fat
FOMA

Fat is an important carrier of aroma compounds and can thus improve the flavor profile of foods. In this project, RISE, together with AAK AB, NordArom AB and Orkla Foods Sverige, we studied the importance of fat for taste and acceptance of plant-based foods that strive to mimic meat, so-called meat analogs.

Division: Division Bioeconomy

Aim

By measuring sensory, instrumental (e.g. microstructure and texture) and behavioral aspects of meat analogs (prototypes) with varying amounts and types of fat, the project aimed at contributing to increased understanding of how fat can influence acceptance and taste experiences of meat analogs in a positive direction, which is an important step in the development of sustainable and tasty plant-based protein products that can replace meat.

Challanges

The vegetable fats used in many meat analogues today are largely unsaturated fats, compared to the fats in land-based animals. Unsaturated fats generally have health benefits over saturated fats, but also have different sensory properties than saturated fats, as they are usually not solid in warm foods. It is well known that fat can affect the sensory experience of meat. However, less is known about how fat content and fat quality affect the acceptance and sensory experience of meat analogues.

A common method of making liquid vegetable fats more solid is so-called hydrogenation. When hydrogenated, however, the healthy properties of the originally unsaturated vegetable fatty acids disappear, because they are then converted into saturated fatty acids by the addition of hydrogen. An interesting alternative to hydration, to create vegetable fats that are more solid at room temperature, are so-called oleogels. With oleogels, you can create gel-like fats, while maintaining the degree of unsaturation of the vegetable fats.

In the manufacture of certain plant-based meat analogues, the protein undergoes a so-called texturing, for example through extrusion, with the aim of creating a meat-like structure of the plant-based proteins. Usually, the fat in meat analogues is added after this process, i.e. after the protein structure has been formed. This can cause the fat in the final product to leak out during storage and cooking. Possibly this problem can be avoided if the fat is added before texturing, thus becoming more integrated into the product.

Consumers may have different expectations of how a food should behave during cooking, for example how well it retains its color and shape and how it behaves when additional ingredients or flavorings are added. Expectations may affect the overall acceptance of meat analogues. It is therefore relevant to study more closely consumers' experiences of cooking meat analogues, and to understand how these experiences can be improved from a product design perspective.

Solution

In this project we:

  • Studied how different types and levels of vegetable fats affect the sensory profile and acceptability of commercially available plant-based meat analogues.
  • Developed prototypes of meat analogues using different fat sources, including oleogels, where the fat is added before and after texturing.
  • Evaluated the produced prototypes sensory using a trained panel.
  • Measure and study the prototypes' physiochemical properties (e.g. microstructure and texture) instrumentally, which helps to explain the sensory experience and facilitate future product development.
  • Qualitatively evaluated of how well the prototypes work and meet consumer expectations when cooking.
