Today it is common to use prefabricated wet room modules as an alternative to a in site-built bathroom in new building projects. It is then important to set the right requirements for the design and that the entire wet room module is tested and approved according to our Swedish rules.

It is of course extremely important that the finished wet room module is waterproof and there is no leakage of water at penetrations, wall and floor angles, floor drain, fixings or linking. It is also important that the different materials are compatible with each other and do not cause corrosion or other damage.

RISE has extensive expertise and services in the prefabricated wet room area, some examples include:

• Watertight and load tests according to ETAG 022. Water spray of floors, walls, penetrations that is, everything where there is a risk of leakage. Load of pipe penetrations and suspension devices, all to mimic real use.
• Corrosion resistance and compatibility between different materials
• Moisture calculations of different design designs
• Damage investigations

We work with type approval of prefabricated wet room modules. Type approval is a national system for assessing and verifying the conformity of construction products with requirements in Swedish building regulations. This means that the construction product is assessed in the aspects expressly stated in the type-approval, by references to the Planning and Construction Act and sections of  – The Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning's Building Regulations.

A type-approval helps the developer to certify that the construction product meets the requirements of the Swedish building regulations. RISE publishes type approval and the associated document, usually the installation instructions.

The holder may refer to type approval to show that the product is tested and certified by a third party and complies with Swedish building regulations.

A test method used for function testing of wet room modules is: EAD 030352-00-0503 combination of Annexes A and E (former ETAG 022).

Type approval of wet room modules takes place according to CR 136 Certification rule for type approval of prefabricated wet room modules.

As a third party RISE performes inspection of design and manufacturing to verify the quality at factory built wooden houses. For more information regarding Säker Vatten inspection, se below.

The purpose with certification is that through an initial audit and follow-up inspections answer to the inspections that the developer and the inspection manager are responsible of, according to the Planning and Building Act (PBL), chapter 10, 5-8 §§. The certification has its origin in the technical properties in PBL, chapter 8, 4-5 §§ and in 18-21 §§ concerning suitability of building products and releasing of building products to the market.

The certification rule covers wooden houses and wooden house components that are manufactured in the factory.

Inspection plan according to the Plan and Building Act

Did you know that the inspection plan according to PBL must also include what is carried out in the factory? In practice, this can be difficult to solve as the factories already have established routines and quality systems adapted for their particular series production, which they are reluctant to adjust for each house object. As a support for developers and inspectors, and to ensure the quality of design and manufacturing carried out by the house manufacturers themselves, the house manufacturers can certify themselves. Certified companies have the right to label products and documentation with the RISE certification and inspection mark.

The certification process

The process of becoming certified begins with an initial examination of the manufacturer's self-inspection system, routines for design, manufacturing in the factory, storage, etc. The review is performed in relation to the certification rule, PBL, Boverket's regulations and industry rules. After that, an initial visit is made by RISE where it is checked that the above works in practice during design and manufacture. After the initial visit, the manufacturer receives his certificate.

Follow-up inspections

Follow-up inspections are carried out twice a year at the manufacturer by RISE. During these visits, it is checked that the manufacturer follows the routines and systems that have been established and reviewed at the time of certification.

Extended review

In the certification rule, there is also an option to choose design review (step 2). If this is chosen, RISE experts carry out a check of all relevant properties concerning PBL, Chapter 8, 4-5 §§ and 19-21 §§ for the company's standard constructions.

History - A look back

System for verifying the quality of factory-made single-family homes has existed since the late 1970s when there was an approval rule from the then Statens Planverk (now Boverket) with the possibility of type-approving these systems. In 1995, the conditions for type approval of control systems were changed, which is why SP together with the industry developed a certification rule (SPCR 112) to meet the need for verification of the factories' own control, mainly against building boards and the inspection manager. In 2014, the certification rule was revised (to CR 065) to better comply with current legislation.

Tents intended for 150 people and more must be inspected and approved in accordance with the order act for use at public gatherings (e.g. religious practice, theatre, circus) and public events (e.g. sports, dance, carnivals, markets).

RISE performs such inspections as an accredited inspection body. Approved tents receive a certificate of approval that is unique to each holder and tent or tent type.

Fire test

For tents made of type-approved tent cloth, no testing is required during the first five years after manufacture.

For tents that are made of non-approved tent cloth or where the cloth is older than 5 years, fire testing is required.

The inspection is conducted within the framework of Swedac's accreditation and is confirmed by a certificate of approval. The regulations contain requirements on the fire-technical properties of the canvas, evacuation safety, carrying capacity, safety against fire origin and spread and electrical safety.

Each tent for the approved gathering tent shall be marked as follows:

Tents that are inspected and approved receive a certificate of approval. The certificate of approval is valid for 3 years (tents used frequently, e.g. circus tents), for 7 years (tents used only 1 - 2 weeks per year eg meeting tent) or for 5 years (others).

Scaffolds and ladders that are sold and used in Sweden must be type examined and meet the requirements of the Swedish Work Environment Authority's regulations. RISE performs type control for these products in Sweden and now also has the opportunity to issue certificates for products to be sold in Norway in accordance the Produsentforskriften.

We perform analyzes and calculations of all types of building structures, structural details and scaffolding. Some examples of scaffolding that we evaluated with FEM analyzes are scaffolding, pallet racks, temporary grandstands and cable ladders. RISE has extensive experience of evaluations, both against Swedish norms and regulations, as AFS 2023:9, as well as foreign standards.

Scaffolding, scaffolding components and ladders need to be type examined or certified in order for them to be marketed and sold in Sweden and Norway. Examples of products that we can type examine/ certify as an accredited body are:

RISE is accredited to be able to do this both according to the Swedish Work Environment Authority's requirements in Sweden but also according to the corresponding requirements of the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority .

Finite Element calculations

Computer calculations are a powerful tool, not least when used in combination with testing, which are increasingly used in product and system evaluation. Advanced calculations are mainly performed using the Finite Element Method (FEM). Component tests are often used to generate input data for the calculation model and full-scale tests for validation of the calculation model. Finite element calculations in combination with scaffolding testing have become a specialty for RISE.

Evaluation and testing of temporary structures are carried out at our accredited operations in Borås where we have our laboratory. We have accreditation for methods in scaffoldings, ladders, trestles, temporary edge protection systems  and safety nets.

The result of an assignment is usually a calculation or test report in which the product's properties and carrying capacity are reported. If the product is to be type-examined, a type-examination certificate or certificate will be issued in accordance with the Swedish Work Environment Authority's regulations for the Swedish market or the Norwegian Labor Inspection Authority's regulations for the Norwegian market.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) placed on the EU market must comply with the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2016/425 and bear the CE marking. RISE is a Notified Body under the Regulation. We carry out the assessments required to verify that your product complies with the applicable regulatory requirements.

With RISE, you receive an independent and recognized basis for CE marking of personal protective equipment (PPE). We assess both the product and the technical documentation, issue the necessary certificates, and guide you through the entire process.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is equipment designed to be worn or used by an individual to protect against risks to health and safety.

Harmonised Standards

Harmonised standards are available for many types of personal protective equipment (PPE). If your product is designed and assessed in accordance with a harmonised standard, you can demonstrate compliance with the applicable requirements of Regulation (EU) 2016/425.

If harmonised standards are not used, RISE can help develop an evaluation plan and verify that the product meets the relevant requirements of the Regulation.

• EU Type Examination (Module B)

You submit an application and the technical documentation to RISE. We review the documentation and assess the product against the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2016/425.

If the product meets the applicable requirements, RISE issues an EU Type Examination Certificate. The certificate is normally valid for five years.

• Assessment of Finished Products (Module C2)

For Category III personal protective equipment (PPE), ongoing surveillance is required after the EU Type Examination Certificate has been issued. RISE carries out sampling and testing of finished products to verify their continued conformity with the approved type.

The results are documented in an assessment report. When the requirements are met, you may use RISE’s identification number as a Notified Body alongside the CE marking.

• Quality System Assessment (Module D)

As an alternative to Module C2, you may choose Module D. Under this procedure, RISE assesses your quality management system for production, final inspection, and testing.

Following a successful assessment, a Production Quality Assurance Certificate is issued. The certificate entitles you to use RISE’s identification number as a Notified Body alongside the CE marking.

To be successful in the US market, boilers and stoves must be tested and certified in accordance with 40 CFR Part 60 standard of performance, issued by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). RISE is one of th few test labs in Europe that are accredited and approved by EPA to perform these tests and certifications.

Since 2017, RISE has been approved by EPA as an independent test lab and third-party certifier for wood and pellet-burning boilers and stoves for houses (residential heaters) and can help fulfill emission allowances in the USA. The combustion lab in Borås, Sweden, has many years of knowledge and experience with testing of boilers and stoves according to numerous different Swedish, European and US standards. RISE issues certificates with these tests as a foundation. Our long experience combined with our number of facilities and wide spectra of technologies is the reason. In 2020, emission requirements was tightened and reduced to 2.0 g of particles per hour for wood-burning stoves and 0.10 lb/mmBtu for boilers.

The combustion laboratory in Borås,Sweden at RISE is accredited and has many years of experience in testing, evaluation and certification of small-scale combustion equipment. Our long experience together with our broad range of expertise within RISE makes our customers trust us not only as a test supplier and certifier, but also as a business partner and adviser.

RISE offers testing and certification of wood-burning boilers, wood-burning stoves, pellet-burning boilers and pellet-burning stoves according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) regulations NSPS 40 CFR Part 60. This allows our customers to supply their equipment with USEPA certificates to the US market.

The test results are delivered in the form of a report in Swedish or English where all measurement results, manuals, drawings etc. are presented. Certificates are delivered in English for international acceptance.

We offer testing and certification of electricity meters according to Swedish, European and international standards.

Common rules for the entire EU apply to the control and approval of new electricity meter types according to the Measuring Instruments Directive (MID). RISE is a notified body for MID and can therefore issue approvals for the entire EU. All testing is accredited by Swedac, the official accreditation body in Sweden.

Even for electricity meters that are not regulated by the MID, electricity meter manufacturers can benefit greatly from a certificate from a reputable third-party laboratory such as RISE. Each test result is compiled in a report or certificate, which minimizes questions and objections when launching new electricity meters on the market.

We carry out testing according to all or part of the standards, including mechanical tests and EMC evaluation.

We perform accredited testing according to these standards:

• Swedish and European standards for MID: SS EN 50470-1, SS EN 50470-3. The tests according to these standards can then be the basis for approvals according to MID modules B and F from the RISE certification department.
• Swedish and European standards outside MID: SS EN 62052-11, SS EN 62053-21/22/23/24.
• International standards: IEC 62052-11, IEC 62053-21/22/23/24.

We also perform some testing and certification for requirements beyond the above standards:

• SP method 1618, for tests with 12 kV impulse voltage.
