Comparative testing for pulp and paper laboratories

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Comparative testing for pulp and paper laboratories Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Proficiency testing represents a valuable method for assessing and ensuring the quality of laboratory operations. These comparisons can encompass various aspects, including instrument performance and analysis methods.

Purpose/Benefit:

By comparing the results from different laboratories, one can detect any potential differences or deviations and identify areas where improvements can be made.

Such a forum for proficiency testing provides an excellent opportunity for open and constructive discussions within the laboratory community. It allows participants to share experiences, discuss best practices, and collectively work towards enhancing the quality and reliability of laboratory analyses. Additionally, it promotes increased awareness of the crucial role that laboratories play in various industries and society as a whole.

By actively participating in proficiency testing and discussions, laboratory personnel can enhance their competence, improve their skills, and develop a deeper understanding of the methods and techniques used within their field of work. This, in turn, can lead to improved accuracy, precision, and reliability in the analyses performed, benefiting both the laboratory's reputation and its ability to deliver high-quality results to its customers and partners.

RISE offers the following tre different test comparisons; PFI mill, ISO Brightness and emission parameters for forest industrial wastewater.

PFI mill - long fiber and short fiber (in collaboration with PFI Instruments)

By participating and comparing your own values for refining with a reference pulp, you know how well your own refiner is calibrated. The results can also be a complement to traceable calibration before applying for accreditation or certification.

Once a year, RISE sends out reference pulp to the participating laboratories for refinering, handmade sheets and testing. The results are processed and compiled at RISE. Everything is presented in a report where the whole is reported in relation to the respective laboratory's values. Diagrams are obtained for each parameter as well as tables with the other participants' results.

The reference pulp is taken in large quantities at one time. This provides an opportunity for a direct comparison with the previous round and a long-term history.

ISO Brightness

The whole method will be tested and this is a good opportunity to easily compare the results from your own measurement with others' results. We will send out two pulps, a hardwood and a softwood. The results are sent to RISE and for compilation, including our own, and the participants are provided with the measurement results. In the compilation, the samples are deidentified so that each participant only knows his result but can compare himself with the other participants' results.

Emission parameters for forest industrial wastewater

Twice a year, May and November, we will send out frozen samples to you. A written summary is received a few months later where the results are presented anonymously. There are two content levels of each analysis. Report the analyzes that are of interest to you.

If there is a request for test rings, please contact us and we can discuss the possibility of starting them up.

You can also find us at EPTIS.

Microbiological Purity of Products in Food Contact

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Microbiological Purity of Products in Food Contact Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Microorganisms in liquids, paper, and cardboard can cause staining and contamination, impacting both the production process and the final product. In food-related manufacturing, it is particularly important to monitor and control this to ensure high standards of quality and hygiene.

Purpose/Benefit:

In the manufacturing of paper and cardboard intended for food contact, it is crucial to carefully monitor the bacterial content of the final product. High bacterial levels can not only impact food safety but also cause issues in the production process. Bacteria can contribute to operational disruptions by forming biofilms in pipelines and on machine components, leading to production downtime and increased maintenance costs. Moreover, microbial growth can result in discoloration or odors in the finished material, which in turn may lead to customer complaints and quality deviations.

To control bacterial levels, standardized testing methods are used to provide an indication of the microbial load in the paper or packaging. While these methods do not always give a complete picture of the specific microorganisms present, they serve as essential tools for ensuring compliance with hygiene standards. Regular monitoring and proper maintenance of production equipment are also crucial measures to minimize the risk of bacterial contamination and to ensure that paper and cardboard products are safe for food contact.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The method ISO8784-1:2014 do not say everything, we know e.g. not which ones grow, but the method is standardized and works well as a control to use even in mills.

Analyzes of Cellulose for Dissolving Pulp

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Analyzes of Cellulose for Dissolving Pulp Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

By using dissolving pulp as a raw material, textile companies can play an active role in the transition towards a more sustainable and circular economy. By investing in research and development of dissolving fibers and production methods, the industry can contribute to promoting a more sustainable future for textile production and consumption.

Purpose/Benefit:

The quality of dissolving pulp is crucial for the resulting fiber's properties, such as strength, elasticity, and color fastness. Therefore, it is important to carefully characterize and test the pulp before it is used in the production process to ensure that it meets specific requirements and standards for the intended use.

RISE has extensive experience and expertise in the characterization and testing of dissolving pulp and can assist companies in the textile and cellulose industries in evaluating and optimizing their raw materials for the production of high-quality fibres and products.

In the viscose pilot plant, along with the analyses mentioned below, individual pulps, as well as the suitability of various cellulose blends for viscose production, can be evaluated. Screening experiments can be conducted to investigate the influence of different process parameters on various dissolving pulps and to test how well a cellulose performs under given process settings. It is also possible to evaluate different process chemicals, test various additives for fibre properties, and so on.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Common pulp analyses:

  • α-, β- och γ-cellulose – A widely used course measurement of the distribution of the degree of polymerisation (DP) of the pulp. High values of α-cellulose is seen as favourable.
  • Acetone Extract – Low content of material extracted with acetone is favourable, but constant levels can be more preferable to ensure stabile processing. Many surface active additives will show up here.
  • Carbonhydrates –Characterisation of the sugar moieties of which the pulp consists, which provides information about e.g. the hemicellulose content.
  • Ash content – Measurement of the inorganic content in the pulp.
  • Metals (Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, Cu) – Measurement of the metal content in the pulp (specifically those found to have effect on the processability).
  • SiO2 content –Often measured on pulps to ensure levels are below a set threshold, as too much silica can disturb the spinning.
  • Lignin content (Klason or acid soluble) – Measurement of the lignin content of the pulp.
  • Molecule weight distribution

Particle Size Distribution

For viscose manufacturers, undissolved particles in the viscose solution pose a challenge, as they can clog both the viscose solution filters and the spinneret nozzles in the spinning bath.

We have a complete chain of pilot equipment, covering the entire process from wood to finished viscose fibre, and the demand for our services in this area is increasing.

In addition to measuring particles, the instrument can also analyse cells, such as yeast cells.

The Multisizer 4 particle size analyser from Beckman Coulter operates based on the Coulter principle and can detect particles within a size range of 0.4 to 170 µm. However, with additional modifications, it can measure particles up to 1,600 µm.

Molecular Weight Distribution in Cellulose Products

Molecular weight distribution is an important parameter that provides insight into the chemical structure and properties of a given polymer or substance.

RISE analyses molecular weight distribution in materials such as pulp, carboxymethyl cellulose, polyacrylate, starch, biocides, lignin, black liquor, and hemicellulose.

Advanced course in physical measurement uncertainty

mätosäkerhet fördjupning

Measurement uncertainty is a way to be able to make the necessary decisions about the quality of measurements and calibrations. This is an intermediate level course for those who already have basic knowledge of measurement uncertainty and who want to extend their skills further.

When making a measurement uncertainty calculation, there are several common questions that arise, such as calculating sensitivity coefficients, significant differences between measurements, measurement results versus requirement limits, and more.

During these days, we go deeper into uncertainty analysis and statistical aids. We discuss and explain the most common problems and issues encountered in a measurement uncertainty calculation. These include overlaying of different distributions, Monte Carlo simulation, analysis of situations when contributions are correlated and where and how to find information about the different input measurement uncertainty contributions.

The course is given in Swedish, but can be ordered in English as customized course at the clients premises.

Basic Physical Measurement Uncertainty

Uncertainty of measurement

It may sound provoking, but we argue that a measurement result is worth nothing, unless the blurry zone surrounding the measured value is estimated, i.e. the measurement uncertainty. This applies in every measurement, both when used for calibration and in regular use of the instruments.

This one-day course is self-contained but can advantageously be combined with our course b1 Measuring equipment and calibration, which is held the day before

In this course you will get an understanding of the different concepts used. For much of the day, we work with examples, analyze measurement safety components, and apply practical step-by-step checklist.

Target audience

This day is for those who work with measurements, measurement results and measuring instruments. Both in industry and in calibration labs.

The course is held in Swedish on November 11 and in English on December 3.

8.00 Meet up, registration and coffee

8.30 Introduction

  • What is the actual purpose of calculating measurement uncertainty?  Basic concepts such as error, uncertainty, and some statistics (mean, distribution, standard deviation, etc.)
  • Workshop, exercises with applications (integrated with the lecture)
  • Measurement Uncertainty Analysis. Fundamental ideas behind measurement uncertainty analysis according to standards.
How do you estimate different sources of measurement uncertainty?
How do you weigh up and combine these contributions into an uncertainty interval?
How is measurement uncertainty reported in documentation?
    A practical step-by-step checklist.

12.00 Lunch

13.00 Workshop: Exercise Examples of Applications of Measurement Uncertainty
Analyze components of measurement uncertainty in both calibration and measurement scenarios.
Includes calculations and practical use of a checklist.
(Coffee will be served during the exercise)

16.15 - 16.45 Summary

Do you have an interesting measurement scenario where the measurement uncertainty needs to be analyzed? This could involve both calibration and the use of measuring equipment. Feel free to email a few lines about the application to per.olof.hedekvist@ri.se, and we might be able to discuss it during the exercises. You also have the opportunity to specify your preferences regarding the focus of the exercises when registering.
