The Pressure Balance -use, theory, and practice

The Pressure Balance – Application, Theory, and Practice

Pressure Balances are stable and accurate devices used to measure pressure, but how are these measurements performed correctly, and what is to be avoided? During the course, theory is mixed with practice. You will learn what pitfalls to avoid and how to calculate the pressure.

In the course, we will describe the design and functionality of the pressure balance and how to calculate the reference pressure based on information provided from a calibration certificate and the pressure balance equation. We will also go through the handling, operation, cleaning, and maintenance-procedures of the pressure balance. In addition, it includes among other things, the handling of sources of error and estimation of measurement uncertainty. A large part of the course will consist of laboratory sessions and practical parts.

Objectives and purpose

The course aims to give you knowledge about the basics of handling and using a pressure balance. After the course, you should be able to calibrate pressure sensors with the help of a pressure balance and be able to assess the influence of external factors such as local gravity.

Target group

The course targets you who use pressure balances for calibrations in your work or who are responsible for calibration laboratories with pressure balances, and who need to deepen your competence in the field. Also, people who are tasked with estimating measurement uncertainty budgets benefit greatly from this course.

The course is given in Swedish.

Rain resistance of precast concrete sandwich walls with façade details

Rain resistance concrete sandwich walls
Driving rain test of concrete sandwich wall

Inspection results showed that in three-quarters of all measured vertical joints between the concrete elements were often significantly too narrow. Lab results for concrete sandwich walls with façade details indicated inward leakage.

There are problems with water intrusion into new external walls of prefabricated concrete sandwich panels in Sweden to a varying extent.

The aim of this study was to obtain documented knowledge and data on driving rain resistance, to provide a basis for improvements in concrete sandwich walls with façade details.

Inspection results showed that, in all buildings, vertical joints between the concrete elements were often significantly too narrow and, at the same time, adhesion loosening of soft mastic in these joints was common. In general, small openings of tubes for depressurisation, drainage and ventilation were often incorrectly placed or had a bad incline. Cracs in concrete panels are also a problem. Field measurements indicated no pressure equalization which is also confirmed by lab measurements.

Lab results for concrete sandwich walls indicated inward leakage at window-wall interfaces, through openings of tubes and in joint with pre-compressed sealing tape.

To our knowledge, the majority of solutions being used are probably not verified with regard to driving rain which in itself unnecessarily risky.

Lab-scale rod coating for quick screening trials

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Lab-scale rod coating for quick screening trials Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Traditionally, rod coating has been used to test surface adhesives and coatings for spreads on graphic paper. But the method has also proven to be valuable for testing coating of new chemical solutions. The method has therefore had a renaissance and is now used in several new application experiments, including nanocellulose.

Purpose/Benefit:

The effects of coating with viscose, nanocellulose and lye on different test surfaces are some examples of coating solutions that can be used. These solutions are applied to the sample using a rod. Different rods are available, ranging from smooth to grooved for different amounts of toppings and solutions. After coating, the sample is dried with, for example, IR dryer, but several drying methods are available. More layers can be applied or the sample can be tested directly in lab.

Various surface adhesives and creams can be boiled and prepared in jet boilers. Samples in A4 format are usually used for coating, but even smaller formats can be coated. Stick coating is a fast method that does not require large amounts of material. After coating, there are also many different options for testing the coated surface, such as contact angle, surface roughness and friction. A good complement to other analyzes of the surface are Cobb 60 and Cobb Unger. The strength properties of the test as well as air permeability and air permeability are examples of other interesting tests that can be performed.

Analysis of wood chips for pulp & paper production

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Analysis of wood chips for pulp & paper production Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The quality of the wood chips is critical to the production of pulp, and at RISE we offer several different analyses to ensure the quality of the wood chips. By carefully examining and evaluating various properties, we can identify any defects or deviations that may affect the production process and the quality of the resulting pulp.

Purpose/Benefit:

We analyse several key parameters in wood chips, including bark content, moisture content, bulk density and dimensions, to ensure high quality pulp production:

  • Bark content: Affects pulp quality by introducing impurities; measurement indicates how well the chips have been cleaned.
  • Bulk Density: Reflects the packing density of the chips and affects flowability and absorption of cooking chemicals.
  • Size and thickness: Consistent size distribution and optimum thickness are essential for effective impregnation, chemical absorption and uniform cooking quality.

Together, these parameters optimise the process and improve pulp quality and uniformity.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):
  • Dry content SCAN-CM 39:94 Determination of bark content in wood chips for the production of chemical and mechanical pulps. It is applicable for the determination of wood grade chips, preferably in conjunction with the method of chip size distribution described in SCAN-CM 40.
  • Size distribution SCAN-CM 40:01 Classification of wood chips intended for the production of chemical and mechanical pulps and is applicable in determining the quality of wood chips in terms of chip size and fineness.
  • Bark content SCAN-CM 42:06 Determination of bark content in wood chips for the production of chemical and mechanical masses.
Dry-Crude Density or Bulk Density SCAN-CM 46:92 Method for determining the bulk density of wood chips intended for the production of chemical or mechanical pulps. It is also possible to measure the bulk volume of wood chips, i.e. the volume of loosely packed chips.
  • Thickness and thickness distribution SCAN-CM 47:92 The method is applicable in determining the quality of wood chips.
Length and length distribution, width and width distribution SCAN-CM 48:01 Determination of mean length and length distribution of wood chips intended for the production of chemical or mechanical pulps (accepted chips).
  • Wood content in bark fraction SCAN-CM 53:94 Determination of the wood content of the bark fraction from a bark drum or from other debarking machinery. The method is applicable in the determination of wood losses in the debarking process. The total timber loss also includes breakage.
  • Dry-raw density SCAN-CM 43:95 Determination of the basic density of wood chips for production of chemical and mechanical pulps.
