Testing of microclimate properties using The Sweating Indentor

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Testing of microclimate properties Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Using the equipment The Sweating Indentor, properties related to microclimate can be measured, which is essential for a product’s perceived comfort.

Purpose/Benefit:

For products with close-to-body use, such as clothes, furniture, and mattresses, their microclimate properties are important for them to be perceived as comfortable. Such properties are called “thermophysiological properties” within the comfort area, and are crucial for a product to be perceived as “moderately warm” and not cause discomfort due to sweating. By performing measurements with the sweating impression body, numerical values can be assigned to these material properties, which can be of great help in comparing different products and in product development.

Products for which this measurement method is suitable include: Beds, mattresses, seat cushions, and wound dressings.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The Sweating Indentor is heated to body temperature and contains water which can be released through a perforated surface in the form of water vapor at a rate that roughly corresponds to the moisture release from a human body at rest. The impression body can thus be considered to simulate a human body (which emits heat and moisture). By pressing the impression body against the test object, with a temperature and humidity sensor placed in the contact zone, the resulting temperature and relative humidity can be determined

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

A test assignment results in measurement values for the microclimate that was measured, i.e., the temperature and relative humidity that the test body gave rise to. The test result is documented in a technical report.

Background

We are facing a demographic development with an increasing proportion of elderly people in our society. With challenges in competence provision as a consequence. Society has a limited amount of resources available to create and maintain our welfare.

In care, one measure could be to introduce more digital solutions to use the resources you have in an optimized way. In the long run, the goal is a dignified life and well-being for the elderly, cost-effective solutions for the municipality and a developing and attractive work environment for employees.

About the project

This project mapped, researched, analyzed and summarized the conditions that exist for a property to function as a hub for sharing data, which ultimately creates the conditions for resource optimization and better health.

Within the framework of the project, a digital twin was developed where data can be collected, put together and analyzed. The digital twin served as a test bed for the simulation of events, interventions and the development of new services and functions.

Through, among other things, technology and IoT in the property, data can be collected and then used to create value. The need for data collection comes from stakeholders with different motivations and areas of use. It can be about nursing, healthcare, technology, asset management, resource optimization, service services, business support /work tools, environment/, IoT.

The project's goal was to understand the conditions for data collection and the digital infrastructure. The project explored how data can be made available to different actors and create benefit in a controlled and innovation-promoting way (secure, standardized, efficient).

Lessons learned

The project gave us the knowledge to be able to prepare our properties in terms of construction technology and infrastructure to create increased safety and quality of life and a better working environment for employees. The experience can be used internally within the municipality for future procurement of new housing. As well as being returned to existing accommodation and future suppliers of real estate and technology.

The project's conditions

The project was carried out together with Haparanda, Hudiksvall municipality and Riksbyggen.

The work was carried out within The strategic innovation program IoT Sverige,
a joint venture of Vinnova, Formas and Energimyndigheten.

Audio-visuell perception in particular for sensory deprivation

Auditory and visual perception
Acoustic measurements in an anechoic room

Hearing and vision provide knowledge on the external world. Many persons are hindered to obtain good information about their environment or to utilize ordinary information sources, With modern technology many sensory deprivations can be alleviated.

Image: Konstnär: Kurt Vikman

To understand how a person perceives the world around them, including when using a digital medium, one should include all the senses that are used and that are affected by the human-computer interaction. There are several studies that treats the visual information, as well as several that study the acoustic information that reaches our ears.

In this project we want to investigate how to understand how both hearing and sight interact with digital information. This will be performed on hearing, sighted persons and people with sensory disabilities.

Risk assessment of screening of non-intentionally added substances (NIAS)

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Risk assessment of “NIAS-screening” Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Product safety is an issue of very high concern for all kinds of materials and products. One of RISE´s core activities in this area is analyses of packaging and materials intended for food contact (FCM).

Purpose/Benefit:

Non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) are chemicals that may be present in food contact materials (FCMs) without being intentionally added. NIAS can be divided into three groups: impurities, reaction products and breakdown products. These substances may migrate into food and pose a safety risk to consumers.

To mitigate the risk, NIAS testing and evaluation are needed which together with other analyses like specific and overall migration testing helps ensure that materials are safe.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

We offer screening of volatile and semi-volatile compounds with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis [Screening for migration of substances from food contact material at 10 ppb level | RISE].

Our toxicologists identify the presence of any hazardous substances among the identified compounds based on literature surveys and/or internationally recognised scientific principles on risk assessment (e.g. the TTC approach / Cramer classification). This data combined with exposure assessment from migration studies or literature data is utilized by our regulatory and toxicology experts to make a final risk assessment.

GC-MS screening is the current “state of the art” technique for NIAS screening. It covers a broad range of possible NIAS. However, there is no standardized and approved method for NIAS testing, and all potential substances may not be tested with only one method. If wanted, we can also support you in setting up a test program and suggest other suitable complementing methods to fully evaluate your food contact material or article [Product safety analyses of food contact materials | RISE].

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

We provide a risk assessment report which is based on the 10 ppb-screening report.

DynoMag – a magnetic measuring system for many applications

DynoMag

To be able to reliably characterize nanostructured materials, including magnetic nanoparticles (MNP), is crucial for standardizing MNP systems and the application of specific analysis methods. The DynoMag system, developed at the RISE Magnetic Sensor Systems Lab in Gothenburg, offers a reliable and integrated magnetic measurement system for biodetection using MNPs and rheological measurements.

Highly interesting work and research are currently underway in defining and standardizing various nanostructures. To enable effective research, reliable and standardized measuring instruments and methods are required. At the RISE Magnetic Sensor Systems Lab, we have successfully developed and standardized measurement instruments and methodology for dynamic magnetic measurement and analysis, which are part of standardized measurement systems for MNPs.

Christer Johansson, senior expert at the Sensor Systems unit at RISE, explains that in dynamic magnetic measurements, an alternating (AC) magnetic field with a specific frequency and amplitude is used on the sample. The resulting dynamic magnetic response, also called AC-susceptometry (ACS), is measured contactless through coils and sensitive magnetic measurement technology.

“The DynoMag system, developed and manufactured at the RISE Magnetic Sensor Systems Lab in Gothenburg, has been central in over 160 scientific articles, particularly in the magnetic analysis of MNP systems. The goal has always been to create a sensitive and user-friendly measurement system with integrated electronics and software, along with associated magnetic models for accurate analysis of measurement data”, says Christer.

The development of DynoMag and other similar ACS systems has been conducted in both internal projects and several EU projects, as well as nationally funded projects. Through the EU projects NanoMag and MagNaStand, the DynoMag system and the measurement methodology have been further developed, resulting in an approved ISO standard for ACS measurement methodology for MNPs.

“By sweeping the frequency and measuring the sample response, the DynoMag system, with its magnetic models, can identify magnetic relaxations and determine the particle size distribution for MNP systems in colloidal solution”, Christer continues.

Another application is monitoring the stability of MNP systems over time under external influences, or as a quality assurance method in the manufacturing of MNP systems to maintain optimal properties or develop new applications. The ACS response in the frequency domain varies depending on the MNP configuration and the presence of particle aggregates.

Through ACS measurement technology and optimal MNP systems, rheological properties can be determined for different substances, from simple Newtonian fluids, like water and glycerol solutions, to complex non-Newtonian substances like gelatin and Xanthan solutions used in the food industry. In a successful project funded by Formas, RISE, together with Chalmers University of Technology, utilized ACS measurement methodology and optimal MNP systems to measure viscoelastic properties in food research.

The DynoMag ACS system also enables sensitive detection of biological markers by measuring and analyzing the response from functionalized MNP systems. A successful project in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology, Karolinska Institute, Uppsala University, and Stockholm University, funded by SSF, resulted in an integrated measurement system for influenza.

“In summary, the DynoMag system is a key component for the characterization of magnetic nanostructures, rheological studies, and biomedical research, with its applications spanning across various disciplines and fields”, Christer concludes.

The DynoMag System

The DynoMag system is a portable easy to use AC susceptometer for measuring the dynamic magnetic properties of liquids, powders and solids at room temperature. The excitation frequency range is from 1 Hz up to 500 kHz with a resolution in volume susceptibility 1·10-5 (SI units) at 1 kHz and a excitation field amplitude of 0.5 mT.

Typical application areas:

  • AC susceptibility measurements of solids, powders and liquids
  • Dynamic magnetic analysis in the field of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs)
  • Determine the size distribution of magnetic nanoparticles using an algorithm included in the software of the DynoMag (including both Brownian and Néel relaxation)
  • Study stability and possible particle clustering during for instance bio-functionalizing of MNPs
  • Follow the binding reactions of biomolecules to MNPs
  • Measurement of magnetic properties in geophysics

Measurement of social interventions at city missions

Person waiting for the bus

RISE helped Sveriges Stadsmissioner to develop and implement methods to measure the impacts of social interventions.

Kenneth Humling, quality developer at Östergötlands Stadsmission.

Sveriges Stadsmissioner is the Swedish national organisation that brings together the local city missions around the country. Together, the ten independent city missions have 1,300 employees and many volunteers who work to fight poverty and homelessness. Within the national organisation, the local city missions collaborate on, advocacy work, collection and quality and method development. An important issue is the follow-up of effects. The interventions need to have an effect on the target groups, such as increasing the quality of life or well-being. But it is also important to be able to show funders that the interventions give positive effects and that the money makes a difference.

"It is difficult to measure social work, but we have taken a good step together with RISE. In 2024, we will continue to implement, develop, and spread the message about the importance of measuring impact", says Kenneth Humling, quality developer at Östergötlands Stadsmission.

It is difficult to measure social work, but we have taken a good step together with RISE

Ombudsmanship and work integration

Among other things, the city missions wanted to develop methods to follow up the effects of ombudsmanship and work integration. Ombudsmanship is an intervention where the target group gets help in activities such as contacts with authorities. Work integration is an intervention aimed at getting the target group into employment.

"We chose these interventions because we work with them at all city missions. We wanted to ensure the quality of the measurements, get reliable metrics on the effects in the target group, but also support the implementation of the new methods in the various city missions", says Kenneth Humling.

Category based measurements

RISE has expertise in areas such as implementation research and so-called category-based measurements, which involve going from simple surveys to quality-assured measurements of experiences, feelings, behaviors, and abilities. With quality-assured measurements, it is possible to state how much the feeling of well-being or quality of life has increased, or how much it has increased in compared to other groups or over time.

"For quality-assured measurements, work is needed in several stages. Construction and testing of questions and surveys is an important part. Another important part is the analysis where you use Rasch analysis to obtain reliable measurement values", says Clara Larsson, analyst at RISE, and continues:

"Then there is always a balancing act in dialogue with the partner, how far you want or can go. More accurate measurements require more work and is more complex, but we should not make more accurate measurements than what the partner needs. The most important thing is that the measurements become useful and provide the answers needed for the partner."

Organising for impact

In addition to questionnaires, tests of the measurement tools against the target groups and recommendations regarding measurement and analysis of the measurements, RISE also produced a training material regarding the integration of effect measurement, a material called Organising for impact. RISE also researched digital tools that might be suitable for carrying out and compiling the measurements. It's important to make it easy, filling out a survey often ends up way down the priority list.

"The focus of our activities is to support the participants in the efforts, we need to make it easy for them to answer. We also need to continue developing the questionnaires, for example we have seen that participants often answer that they feel much better than they actually do. Another aspect is that if we help explain the questions to the participant, we influence the result to some extent. There are also challenges with language barriers that we want to continue working on", says Kenneth Humling.
