RISE Substitution Tool

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Identification of alternatives to unwanted chemicals Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

RISE offers support in the identification of relevant alternatives to substitute unwanted chemicals and substances in products and processes. RISE has developed an efficient internal substitution tool to easily screen a broad database of substances and select the most promising ones to solve complex substitution challenges.

Purpose/Benefit:

Many products and processes use today chemicals that need to be replaced due to their negative environmental impact, toxic properties or upcoming regulations. The substitution of a chemical is a complex process that need to account for the physical and chemical properties of the substance to be replaced as well as other critical parameters such as toxicology, environmental impact, cost or even colour and odour.

RISE has developed a unique internal substitution tool to easily identify potential substitutes to toxic chemicals. The tool capitalizes on the Hansen solubility parameters of substances, which provide an indication on the likeness between different substances with respect to their chemical structure and physical properties. The tool has been extended to include information on toxicity and hazard data, environmental effects, eye irritation, skin permeation, prices and odors. The combination of all these parameters in a single search allows for a facile screening of a broad range of substances.

By using the tool, highly relevant alternatives can easily be identified, which limits the number of trials to be performed and reduces the cost of the substitution process. The risk of performing regrettable substitution is greatly lowered.

The substitution tool has been proven to be very efficient for substitution of solvents but could also be used for the substitution of, for example, plasticizers.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The work always starts with discussion with the client to identify all the parameters that need to be accounted for in the search for alternatives for the specific product or process.  After identification of the most critical parameters to account for, a search is made by RISE in a broad database of substances using the substitution tool to identify promising candidates. The list is further refined according to secondary criteria and a list of potential alternatives is generated.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The client receives a list of potential alternatives to substitute the targeted toxic substance.

Delivery time:

The delivery time depends on the complexity of the challenge to be solved.

Harmonised Standards

Harmonised standards are available for many types of personal protective equipment (PPE). If your product is designed and assessed in accordance with a harmonised standard, you can demonstrate compliance with the applicable requirements of Regulation (EU) 2016/425.

If harmonised standards are not used, RISE can help develop an evaluation plan and verify that the product meets the relevant requirements of the Regulation.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):
  • EU Type Examination (Module B)

You submit an application and the technical documentation to RISE. We review the documentation and assess the product against the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2016/425.

If the product meets the applicable requirements, RISE issues an EU Type Examination Certificate. The certificate is normally valid for five years.

  • Assessment of Finished Products (Module C2)

For Category III personal protective equipment (PPE), ongoing surveillance is required after the EU Type Examination Certificate has been issued. RISE carries out sampling and testing of finished products to verify their continued conformity with the approved type.

The results are documented in an assessment report. When the requirements are met, you may use RISE’s identification number as a Notified Body alongside the CE marking.

  • Quality System Assessment (Module D)

As an alternative to Module C2, you may choose Module D. Under this procedure, RISE assesses your quality management system for production, final inspection, and testing.

Challenge testing with microorganisms - practical product testing

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Challenge testing with microorganisms Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Challenge testing is used for the practical assessment of growth, survival or reduction of relevant, pathogen or spoilage microorganisms when added to the actual product. It is an important tool when developing a new product or changning recipe.

Purpose/Benefit:

Why use a challengetest?
Sometimes it is desirable or necessary to verify a theoretical assessment of growth, survival or inhibition of microorganisms by performing a practical challengetest. The test can be used to assess if the product is safe with regard to inhibition of growth from a pathogen or to the spoilage flora to be able to say if the product has the expected shelf life.

It is possible to evaluate what happens when preservatives are added and/or the product is stored in different temperatures, maybe in combination with a specific packaging technique.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

How the test is done?
Microorganisms are carefully selected having a relevant origin and prehistory for the purpose of test to be done. The preferred pathogen or spoilage bacteria, yeast ond or mould are added to the product and the inoculated samples are stored under well defined temperature conditions before analysed at relevant time intervals. The challengetests are normally performed in the actual product, but sometimes it is more convinient to use a food model instead, mimicking the food composition.

Examples of challenge tests perfomed in our lab:
• Listeria monocytogenes in cold smoked salmon
• Clostridium botulinum in sausage batter after heat treatment
• Debaromyces, Zygosaccharomyces, Penicillium and Aspergillus in cold sauces, beverages
Effect from nitrite, NaCl, pH-value, sorbate, benzoate, lactate, protective cultures and MAP have been tested separately or in combination.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

A challenge test is used to confirm or strengenth the result from a theoretical microbial risk assessment to secure the production of microbiologically shelf stable and safe food.
