Sound insulation measurement and noise measurements in buildings

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Sound measurements in buildings Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

RISE has extensive experience of sound insulation measurements in buildings in order to ensure the indoor environment. We work widely in all areas with examples such as research, verification and certification. Our customers are in industry and within public sector and we are accredited for the current Swedish and international standards

Purpose/Benefit:

It is important to build according to the regulations that exist today, but sometimes there can be problems anyway. We have a long experience of assessing both that the sound environment is satisfactory in new buildings, for example through our work with P-marking, and investigate why the sound environment is perceived as unsatisfactory in existing buildings. In homes, in different workplaces from office landscapes to hospitals, in schools and in other areas, we have investigated what problems the sound environment poses for the business and what the causes are. Sometimes we have been involved in the process and come up with measures and improvements. Sometimes we have had the role of third-party auditor, where we acted on the basis of RISE status as an independent institute, depending on the needs of the customer. To help us, we have all the resources required to run qualified acoustic assignments in the field.

Fire resistance tests for doors, windows, gates, and shutters

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Fire resistance tests for doors, windows, gates, and shutters Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The products must be able to withstand a fully developed fire and prevent the fire from spreading between, for example, an apartment and a staircase.

Purpose/Benefit:

Testing is performed according to EN 1634-1 which describes a method for determining the fire resistance of doors, openable windows, gates, and shutters which are mounted in vertical constructions. The standard must be read together with EN 1363-1. To get the most out of tests, RISE is happy to help you choose what to test to reach as wide field of application as possible. By studying extended field of application standards such as EN 15269-2 for steel doors and EN 15269-3 for wooden doors, we can cover a range of doors with as few tests as possible.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The test specimen is mounted in a supporting construction which is selected based on the door construction and how the door is to be used in practice. For doors that must meet the requirements for insulation, thermocouples are mounted on the non-fire-exposed side of the door. For doors where the temperature on the non-fire side can exceed 300 °C, the radiation can also be measured.

The door with the supporting construction is placed on a vertical furnace which is then heated according to the standard fire source curve which is described in EN 1363-1. The test then lasts as long as you wish to get it approved for. You can also extend the test time slightly and then get better conditions for subsequent assessments of similar constructions. During testing, the following requirements for the product are investigated:

E = Integrity (tightness) i.e. flames, openings and hot gases

I1 and I2 = Thermal insulation

W = Radiation

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Testing takes place in Borås or Trondheim.

After testing, a test report with the results is delivered in Swedish/Norwegian or English. The report can be used as a basis for a classification according to EN 13501-2, which in turn can be used in declaring fire performance in connection with CE-marking or a Swedish type approval. Read more about CE-marking of doors here.

The classification standard EN 13501-2 defines the classes that can be used in Europe and the classes in the table below can be applied to doors, openable windows, gates, and shutters. National authorities in the member states can choose not to use all classes, which is why it is important to check which classes are of interest before testing.

SP FIRE 105 – Fire test for facade

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): SP FIRE 105 – Fire test for facade Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Meet the fire requirements in the BBR for facade systems in multi-storey buildings through the method SP FIRE 105. A full-scale method where the facade is exposed by an apartment fire that escapes out through a window opening. RISE offers testing at our fire lab in Borås, where our world-leading smoke cleaning system takes care of all emissions.

Purpose/Benefit:

Fire test according to SP FIRE 105 evaluates the fire properties of a facade system regarding flame spread, falling parts, temperature at the eaves and radiation towards the floor above the burning apartment. The general recommendation in National Board of Housing, Building and Planning's building regulations, the BBR, refers directly to the method in the case of external walls in building class BR1 and the requirements are described in the recommendation.

Examples of facade systems that can be tested in this method are wooden facades, rough casted cellular plastic facades, board facades, concrete elements etc.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The facade system is mounted on our rig, either directly against the steel frame or on a cover of lightweight concrete blocks. The rig is 4 meters wide and 6 meters high and contains two fictitious window openings that represent two floors.

The thing to keep in mind is that assembly should be performed as close to reality as possible. Window frames should be used around the fictitious windows and along the lower edge of the system, the edge first exposed by the fire. It is important to determine which substrate(s) the system is usually applied to and how the various components are to be mounted. Any air gaps or similair should be considered.

During testing, the rig is placed over a fire room that will simulate an apartment that is on fire. A fire with 60 liters of Heptane is the source of the fire and creates an flash over ignition of the apartment that pushes flames out of the window opening and the flames expose the surface of the facade. The test lasts around 17 minutes. During this time, falling parts are observed and temperature measurements at the eaves and radiation measurements against the floor above the burning apartment are performed. After the test, the specimen is inspected to determine how far the flame base has reached.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

After testing, a test report is delivered in Swedish or English with the results. The report can be used as a basis for an assessment from RISE or a Swedish type approval that facilitates reaching the market.

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

DSC is mainly used for analysing plastics, polymer fibers and coatings. Determination of melt temperature (Tm), glass transition temperature (Tg), Oxidation Induction Temperature- or Time (OIT) are very common. OIT is an indirect measure of the ability of a material to resist degradation by oxidation in air. Also curing reaction may be analysed.

Purpose/Benefit:

Most polymers have specific melt temperatures, or glass transition temperatures. Therefore DSC is often used to identify plastics and plastic mixtures. For identification of un-known samples DSC-analysis is often  combined with FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) Spectroscopy.

Degree of crystallinity, miscibility of different polymers, curing reactions as well as heat capacity may be analysed. A very common analysis is oxidation stability of polyethylene or polypropylene. A sample is heated in air/oxygen and the time to thermal oxidaton or degradation is measured.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

In DSC thermal properties in an material  are measured as a function temperature. A small test sample, typically 5-10 mg is placed in sample holder and heated at a constant rate or is held at constant tempererature. An empty crucible is placed in the instrument oven together with the test sample. Sample and reference are exposed to the same temperature program and the difference in temperature at thermal transitionis is registered. Melting of the sample needs more energy compared to the reference and causes a temperature difference, which is recorded in a thermogram.

The instrument temperature measure samples from -50°C up to 1100 °C and the heating rate varies between 0,1 till 100°C per minute.

DSC instruments are found at several locations at RISE and we collaborate to give our clients the best service and delivery time. In Mölndal the core comtenece is recycling and material formulation and processing  in Borås our expertise is focused on polymer constructon materials and accelerated ageing , in Göteborg plastic pipes are analysed and in Stockholm/Kista we have competence on polymers used in chemical process industry.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Test results are delivered in a technical report including thermogram, where method used is described and results are explained.

Follow-up and support for Vinnova's program Universal design

Collaboration support Universal design

RISE has been given the task to follow up on Vinnova's program focused on universal design (a governmental assignment from 2017-2020). The aim of the program has been to ensure that organisational development, environments and services are universally designed, so that they become accessible and useful to all people no matter social affiliation.

Universal Design

Universal design ensures that the development of, for example, activities, environments and services, are designed for human diversity and everyone's participation.

Working with universal design strengthens the conditions for a society that is as accessible as possible for everyone, regardless of functional ability, age, gender, ethnicity or other social affiliation.

Vinnova has financed about 30 projects between 2017-2020 within the program initiative Universal design/Accessibility design, of which 20 are in progress and 13 are completed. To understand in what way the projects have contributed to the purpose of the investment and whether the projects have the potential to contribute to a positive impact at a systematic level, an initial follow-up of the program is needed. Previous experience of norm-changing projects, such as projects concerning cities' ability to innovate and adapt, shows that it is also positive to support collaboration and coordination between projects while they are ongoing.

Purpose and goals

The overall purpose of the assignment is to follow up Vinnova's government assignment on universal design / accessibility design for 2017-2020 and to produce a basis for Vinnova's feedback. The goal of the follow-up is that opportunities, obstacles and challenges are made visible and highlighted regionally and nationally and form the basis for policy changes and implementation. The assignment also intends to support the assignment and its projects in general in terms of collaboration both within the projects and between the projects. The collaboration support shall contribute to utilization, dissemination, exchange of experience and learning, as well as innovation-promoting initiatives.

The follow up thus stands on two legs

1. Provide documentation that describes, synthesizes and summarizes knowledge and lessons learned from the projects within the program.

2. Collaborative support that promotes learning and innovation ability but also enhances opportunities, obstacles and challenges visible in the work with universal design from a larger system perspective.

In conclusion, the follow-up will highlight both obstacles and opportunities for universal design, which will act as support for increased accessibility in cities 'and communities', activities, environments and services. Part of the goal is that knowledge and use of universal design as a strategic tool for socially sustainable community building in Swedish planning practice has increased.

3. Good health and well-being
5. Gender equality
10. Reduced inequalities
11. Sustainable cities and communities
16. Peace, justice and strong institutions

P-marking of air filters

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): P-marking of air filters Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The P-mark is a certification for air filters intended for ventilation systems within the classification groups ISO ePM1, ISO ePM2.5 and ISO ePM10. The P-mark is RISE own quality label, which is found on many products and services, of which air filters are one.

Purpose/Benefit:

The P-marking is a way of showing how requirements in Swedish building regulations and in voluntary requirements are fulfilled. P-marking of air filters is a voluntary commitment which means that the quality of the filters is controlled by an independent party, which contributes to increasing customers’ confidence in the product.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The P-marking is based on certification rule CR 055 ”Air filter for ventilation plants”. In order for an air filter to be P-marked, it must first be tested with regard to: initial pressure drop and filter class according to ISO 16890, energy consumption according to Eurovent 4/21 and long-term characteristics that are evaluated over three months with regard to degree of filtration efficiency.

In addition, the manufacturer is required to have a functioning quality system for its production. The manufacturer’s factory production control is monitored; an agreement is signed with RISE on continuous inspections and thereafter RISE performs external inspection every year at the production site, including sampling for test in accordance with ISO 16890.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

If the requirements of the certification rule are fulfilled, a certificate may be issued and the filter could then be marked with the P-mark. Certificates can include a product group, also called a product family, and can thus include more articles than the one being tested. The certificate is valid for five years and can then be renewed for further five-year periods.

Prefabricated wet room modules

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Prefabricated wet room modules Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Today it is common to use prefabricated wet room modules as an alternative to a in site-built bathroom in new building projects. It is then important to set the right requirements for the design and that the entire wet room module is tested and approved according to our Swedish rules.

Purpose/Benefit:

It is of course extremely important that the finished wet room module is waterproof and there is no leakage of water at penetrations, wall and floor angles, floor drain, fixings or linking. It is also important that the different materials are compatible with each other and do not cause corrosion or other damage.

RISE has extensive expertise and services in the prefabricated wet room area, some examples include:

  • Watertight and load tests according to ETAG 022. Water spray of floors, walls, penetrations that is, everything where there is a risk of leakage. Load of pipe penetrations and suspension devices, all to mimic real use.
  • Corrosion resistance and compatibility between different materials
  • Moisture calculations of different design designs
  • Damage investigations

We work with type approval of prefabricated wet room modules. Type approval is a national system for assessing and verifying the conformity of construction products with requirements in Swedish building regulations. This means that the construction product is assessed in the aspects expressly stated in the type-approval, by references to the Planning and Construction Act and sections of  – The Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning's Building Regulations.

A type-approval helps the developer to certify that the construction product meets the requirements of the Swedish building regulations. RISE publishes type approval and the associated document, usually the installation instructions.

The holder may refer to type approval to show that the product is tested and certified by a third party and complies with Swedish building regulations.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

A test method used for function testing of wet room modules is: EAD 030352-00-0503 combination of Annexes A and E (former ETAG 022).

Type approval of wet room modules takes place according to CR 136 Certification rule for type approval of prefabricated wet room modules.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Tests are presented in a test report.  In the case of type-approval, a certificate is issued.
