Failure investigations of pipes and fittings of plastics and metal

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Failure investigations of pipes Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Take advantage of experience of failures in your pipe system. Gain knowledge so that you do not repeat old mistakes and use bad design solutions. In addition, you need to know the status of your pipe system, so you can assess when different parts need to be replaced.

Purpose/Benefit:

Gain knowledge about the causes of failures in your pipe system. The knowledge is useful to improve the pipe system, find out the status of your pipe system or determine which party caused the failure. A failure investigation is about finding out if the cause is due to poor design solutions, defective components, installation errors, external damage, or age. Failures in pipe systems are often related to joints between pipes and pipe parts but can also be due to that the pipes are worn out. Cast iron pipes are exposed to corrosion and after many years of operation, the material thickness can become very thin locally. Polymers in plastic pipes also age and can degrade after long-term usage.

Knowledge gives you the opportunity to improve your pipe system, by being able to make better choices when parts are to be replaced or the system is to be expanded. By gaining knowledge about the status of the pipe system, you can better plan your maintenance and replace components in time. Often the purpose of a failure investigation can be to clarify the issue of liability. RISE performs independent failure investigations of pipes and fittings made of plastics and metal.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Initially, we compile the information about the failure that the customer has. This concerns how the component had been installed in the pipe system, position of leakage, make, operating conditions, age and any protocols kept during installation. After that an ocular inspection follows and possibly a pressure test if we need to determine the position of the leakage.

Then a specific investigation is initiated related to the type of component and failure. Is there a standard that the component should have met upon delivery? We assess whether the component met current requirements and specifications upon delivery. This often means that we measure the component geometrically and take out test specimens to do destructive testing. When welded joints are investigated, it is often also a question of destructive testing, but analysis of fracture surfaces with a microscope can also be considered.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Conditions and conclusions of our investigation are compiled in a written report.

Multifunctional urban climate adaptation in collaboration

MuKliS
Rain garden

The project creates conditions for implementing efficient and sustainable climate adaptation of the built urban environment. The focus is on reducing vulnerability in case of cloudburst and heat waves with measures that also create other social, economic and environmental benefits.

Coordinator

Climate adaptation

Approx. 10 mSEK
Division: Do not use - Division Built Environment

Heavy rains and heat waves are extraordinary events that are expected to become more common as the climate changes. Particularly vulnerable is the built environment with very hard surfaces and heat-reflecting buildings. Climate adaptation measures are costly, but by creating multifunctional facilities that generate many benefits, great values can be added to the urban environment.

In a number of case studies in Stockholm and Västerås, various existing methods are tested to evaluate and prioritize measures. An evaluation is made to provide concrete recommendations on how solutions can interact for the best multifunctional benefit and cost efficiency. This enables socio-economically motivated priorities so that cities can to a greater extent achieve resilience in the urban development process. In order to bridge deadlocks and increase transparency, decision support models are developed for, among other things, cross-sectoral collaboration, cost distribution and citizen involvement.

Measurement of trichloramine

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Air quality in indoor pools - air sampling for trichloramine Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

As an independent partner, RISE conduct air quality measurements of trichloramine in indoor swimming pool facilities according to the recommendations from Folkhälsomyndigheten.

Purpose/Benefit:

The characteristic scent of indoor swimming pool is trichloramine. Thichloramine is formed when nitrogen containing contaminations from e.g. urine and sweat reacts with chlorine used for cleaning of the water. Trichloramine is volatile and evaporates from the water into the air where it can cause health issues as irritated respiratory tract and eyes. Asthma can worsen from exposure to trichloramine.

According to Folkhälsomyndigheten the indoor swimming pool practice needs to have routines to control the indoor air quality at indications or risk for elevated levels of thichloramine.

 https://www.folkhalsomyndigheten.se/publicerat-material/publikationsark…

https://www.folkhalsomyndigheten.se/publikationer-och-material/publikationsarkiv/f/folkhalsomyndighetens-allmanna-rad-hslf-fs-2021-11/

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Thichloramine is measured from air pumped through a quartz filter.

Folkhälsomyndigheten recommends measurements above the water surface. If the facility uses recycled air, also the maximum recycled air need to be measured.

In addition, RISE suggests measurements next to the pool to better reflect levels for personnel.

RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB, Chemistry and Applied Mechanics is accredited as a testing laboratory according to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (Accreditation certificate nr 1002).

Fire resistance tests for non-load-bearing walls and fixed windows

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Fire resistance tests for non-load-bearing walls and fixed windows Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The construction must be able to withstand a fully developed fire and prevent the fire from spreading between, for example, two apartments.

Purpose/Benefit:

Testing is performed according to EN 1364-1 which describes a method for determining the fire resistance of non-load-bearing walls . The standard must be read together with EN 1363-1. To get the most out of tests, RISE is happy to help you choose what to test to reach as wide field of application as possible.

The method can be applied to non-load-bearing inner walls with or without glazing, walls consisting mostly of glass and other inner or outer walls with or without glazing. The method is also applicable to fixed windows.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The test specimen is mounted in a supporting construction, usually a standard frame with an opening of 3 meters x 3 meters, with a vertical side free and the remaining three sides attached to the supporting construction. If any of the dimensions, length or width of the test object is in practice less than 3 meters, this dimension shall be tested in full scale.

The test specimen must be constructed as in practice. According to the standard, different design solutions may not be mixed in a test, such as different types of glass, if it does not conform to the design solution used in practice.

For walls and windows that must meet the requirements for insulation, thermocouples are mounted on the non-fire-exposed side of the wall. For constructins where the temperature on the non-fire side can exceed 300 °C, the radiation can also be measured. During the test the deformation shall be measured for later use as basis for assessments.

The test specimen with the supporting construction is placed on a vertical furnace which is then heated according to the standard fire source curve which is described in EN 1363-1. The test lasts as long as you wish to get it approved for. You can also extend the test time slightly and then get better conditions for subsequent assessments of similar constructions. During testing, the following requirements for the product are investigated:

E = Integrity (tightness) i.e. flames, openings and hot gases

I = Thermal insulation

W = Radiation

For certain walls, mechanical action is required and then the impact test according to EN 1363-2 must be used. Impact tests are performed using a 200 kg heavy bag that is swung towards the wall at the end of the test, see photo below. After passing the impact test, index M is given to the classification.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Testing takes place in Borås or Trondheim.

After testing, a test report with the results is delivered in Swedish/Norwegian or English. The report can be used as a basis for a classification according to EN 13501-2, which in turn can be used in declaring fire performance in connection with CE-marking or a Swedish type approval. Read more about CE-marking of doors here.

The classification standard EN 13501-2 defines the classes that can be used in Europe and the classes in the table below can be applied to non-load-bearing walls and fixed windows. National authorities in the member states can choose not to use all classes, which is why it is important to check which classes are of interest before testing.
