Kristineberg Innovation Center
The ocean is becoming increasingly important — for climate mitigation, for resilience, and for the future of industry. Global investment in marine and maritime solutions is growing, and Sweden has strong potential to take a leading role in this development.
A platform for sustainable blue growth
Kristineberg Innovation Center is establishing a dedicated innovation environment for the blue economy in West Sweden. It brings together companies, academia and business support organisations within a shared platform where marine solutions are developed, tested and scaled.
The initiative is built around three strategic focus areas: advanced materials, marine robotics and autonomous systems, and seafood. Together, these areas enable sustainable food production from the sea, materials development for demanding marine environments, and advanced technologies for monitoring, operations and maintenance offshore.
For small and medium-sized enterprises
Many SMEs within the marine and maritime sectors lack the in-house resources required for research and development. Kristineberg Innovation Center provides access to test and demonstration environments in relevant marine settings, specialised research expertise and structured collaboration — without requiring companies to build equivalent capabilities themselves.
By integrating infrastructure and expertise, the centre shortens the path from idea to market. Companies are supported in developing, validating and refining their solutions, strengthening their competitiveness both regionally and internationally.
For academia and research organisations
The centre fosters closer alignment between research and industrial needs. Research outcomes can be translated into application more rapidly, new collaborative projects can be initiated, and interdisciplinary partnerships can develop. This enhances both the quality of research and its societal impact.
For business support organisations
Kristineberg provides a coordinated framework where advisory services, business development and innovation support are closely linked to technical development and testing environments. This strengthens alignment and increases the overall impact of support efforts within the blue economy.
A strategic node in Sweden's innovation system
Kristineberg is being developed as a key node within Sweden's innovation system for the blue economy, through collaboration between RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Chalmers University of Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Innovatum Science Park.
The project contributes to the transition towards more sustainable use of marine resources by strengthening innovation capacity, fostering cross-sector collaboration and creating robust conditions for long-term competitiveness within the blue economy.
