MIMER: Sweden’s AI Factory Powers Up – Supercomputing Race to Tomorrow’s AI Solutions

09 April 2025, 15:42

Sweden is entering the fast lane of European AI innovation. MIMER, one of the 13 AI Factories funded by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, is preparing for launch. Hosted by Linköping University and RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, MIMER aims to provide Swedish AI businesses with access to world-class computing infrastructure, AI expertise, and business support – free of charge for startups and SMEs.

This initiative is central to the EU’s effort to build a robust, interconnected AI ecosystem that fosters innovation on European terms. The EU aims to secure digital sovereignty and ensure AI development aligns with shared values and legal frameworks.

The European AI ecosystem includes several key initiatives: European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs) help companies test and adopt AI locally; Testing and Experimentation Facilities (TEFs) offer large-scale environments for AI trials in sectors like healthcare, manufacturing, and agri-food; and the AI-on-Demand Platform connects developers with tools, data, and expertise. AI Factories like MIMER provide the infrastructure, compute power, and talent to scale innovation and turn ideas into impactful solutions.

“It can feel daunting with all the emerging regulations on data and AI, but the AI Factories, together with the TEFs, are here to help companies to be compliant which in turn ensures scalable ethical and trustworthy AI innovation.”

Responsible AI right from the start

The 13 AI Factories across Europe form a distributed network of innovation hubs—designed to collaborate, share knowledge, and accelerate progress through co-learning, co-creation, and shared access to computing power, data, and AI expertise. Sweden was among the first seven countries to secure EU funding for its AI Factory, and MIMER is in a prime position as it gears up for takeoff this spring.

MIMER builds on existing national expertise through Linköping University’s National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS), and benefits from RISE’s deep connections to Swedish industry. While Linköping leads the research side, RISE plays a key role in engaging small and medium-sized enterprises and the public sector. The response has already been strong, with several companies lined up.

”It’s fortunate that we already have the ENCCS project where we can bring the early bird customers while we wait to launch MIMER”, says Petra Dalunde.

The AI Factory MIMER will focus on four key domains where Sweden holds strength and growth potential: Gaming, Autonomous Systems, Life Sciences, and Material Sciences., Together, these initiatives ensure that AI innovation in Europe is inclusive, scalable, and responsibly developed—guiding startups and SMEs every step of the way, from idea to deployment.

"The four selected areas are where EU will assess whether access to MIMER has advanced the field and/or contributed positively to development, but we welcome stakeholders from all areas and do not regard them as limitations," says Petra Dalunde.

MIMER a One-Stop-Shop for AI Development

MIMER is designed to be a one-stop-shop for AI innovation. It is built on three integrated pillars: Develop – Test – Deploy. That means you can get help with every step, from getting assistance to ensuring that the data meets the necessary quality standards, all the way through test to deployment and launch, at all times.

Startups and SMEs will gain access to:

  • High-performance computing resources to train and scale their AI models
  • AI expertise, including hands-on support from top researchers and engineers
  • Datasets, tools, and collaborative environments
  • Workshops, bootcamps, and training to build internal capacity
  • Business development support to help bring innovations to market

While startups and SMEs are the primary target, large enterprises, public sector actors, and researchers can also participate (at cost).

MIMER: A well of knowledge

The name MIMER comes from Nordic mythology – Mímir was the guardian of the well of wisdom beneath the world tree Yggdrasil. According to legend, drinking from Mímir’s well granted knowledge of the past, present, and future.

We find it a fitting metaphor—it resonates with what the AI Factory aims to be for Sweden’s AI community: a source of deep insight, foresight, and capability for those shaping tomorrow’s AI-solutions.
