Einride gets green light from authorities after RISE review

Swedish start-up Einride wants to capture the potential of autonomous, electrified trucks. Every claim regarding safety, security and control must be verifiable. RISE has supported Einride with safety reviews in several crucial areas.
"Our safety management model combines strong internal controls with independent third-party reviews," says Nourie Boraie, Head of Global Affairs & Safety Oversight at Einride.

The electrification and autonomisation of heavy vehicles addresses two major challenges for the future. Firstly, reducing the climate impact of the transport sector and, secondly, meeting society's need for efficient freight transport.

In addition, discussions are underway regarding whether autonomous trucks can eliminate accidents linked to human error, including in a report published by the World Economic Forum. The same report notes that there is a shortage of drivers at the same time as the e-commerce market is growing rapidly. Here too, automation could be part of the solution.

In short, there is much to suggest that autonomous, electrified lorries have great potential for society. One of the companies seeking to capture this potential is the Swedish company Einride.

Decarbonising global supply chains

The company is perhaps best known for its self-driving, electric trucks without driver cabs, known as "e-bots," which can be monitored remotely by operators. Einride has also developed a digital platform for freight optimisation. Its customers include both logistics giants and well-known brands.

"The focus is on decarbonising global supply chains safely and on a large scale. We want to do this by building trust within institutional frameworks and cross-border regulatory systems. We feel that governments and authorities are positive about working with us because we have this regulatory perspective," says Nourie Boraie.

Often, when it comes to new products and innovative technologies, there are no standards in place yet.

There are many points of contact between Einride and RISE. In 2019, Einride enlisted the help of RISE to review the company's early design. Einride has also had RISE evaluate its software systems based on likely regulatory developments. Maria Sjöström, Head of the Safe Control Systems Unit at RISE, explains:

“Often, when it comes to new products and innovative technologies, there are no standards in place. As an accredited certification body, RISE sits on the committees that develop tomorrow’s standards, so we have insight into what lies ahead and can, to some extent, influence developments. This insight is appreciated by the industry,” says Maria Sjöström.

Security review paved the way for approval

In the spring of 2025, Einride had to submit an independent review to the Swedish Transport Agency in order to obtain approval for trials of the company's autonomous and electric trucks on public roads. RISE carried out the review, which looked at the functional safety of the control system, for example by examining the system's ability to detect obstacles on the road. Cyber security was also reviewed. The work resulted in a report, which in turn generated a green light from the Swedish Transport Agency.

"We collaborate with several independent bodies, but due to our Swedish context and the great respect that authorities in Sweden and abroad have for RISE, we have based most of our safety case on RISE's independent and comprehensive review of our systems. We have built four different national licensing processes based on that review", says Nourie Boraie, continuing:

"Having a partner like RISE, who are willing to sit down with us and come up with a plan to review and validate something that didn't exist yesterday – that has been crucial for us. This is not a partnership where we write our own verdict; the team at RISE has not been afraid to question us. It's challenging in a very rewarding way."

Collaboration that drives innovation

Maria Sjöström explains that Einride and RISE have also conducted joint research projects with the aim of advancing their positions in the field of technology.

“RISE can work with a large part of the so-called TRL scale (Technology Readiness Levels), helping companies to sort out difficult issues in research projects and certify products that are ready to be released on the market. As an independent research institute and certification body, we cannot tell a company how to solve a particular problem, but we can point out the applicable requirements and share our expertise in the field", she says.

At the time of writing, Einride is approaching a significant milestone. In November 2025, the company announced plans for a stock market listing during the first half of 2026.

"We want to establish Einride as a European operator of autonomous vehicles that has earned a place at the global table through an uncompromising commitment to safety and security," says Nourie Boraie, continuing:

"Our security governance model is a system that combines robust internal controls with independent third-party auditing by organisations such as RISE, ensuring that our claims regarding security, safety and governance are verifiable, not visionary."
