A battery storage system

Battery storage in future fossil-free preparedness measures

Can a battery storage system, intended for the system service market, be used to power parts of critical infrastructure in an island operation mode? How can renewable electricity production extend resilience? This project will analyze stationary battery storage as a potential emergency preparedness measure.

In an increasingly electricity-dependent society, electrical preparedness is a highly relevant issue. Among other measures, MSB (The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency) has identified island operation as an important measure to enhance preparedness.

The project aims to investigate the possibility of using a battery storage system, which is normally used to participate in Svenska Kraftnät's system service market, also as an emergency preparedness measure. The hypothesis is that during a national power outage, the remaining energy in the battery storage system can be used as backup power. The conditions for island operation using the battery storage system in combination with small-scale renewable electricity production will also be examined.

This project aims to conduct a case study based on this battery storage system to answer questions such as:

  • Can the battery storage system be used as backup power during temporary power outages?
  • What conditions need to be met for it to be feasible?
  • What technical requirements are needed for operating a microgrid?
  • Where in the grid should a battery storage system be placed to be useful as backup power?
  • Is it possible to establish island operation based on battery storage and small-scale renewable electricity production, as well as potentially other types of energy storage, such as hydrogen, nearby?
