SkadeScan-damage assessment of surfaces

Can image processing and sensors transform how we assess materials? By combining AI, sensors, and image analysis, we are developing a method for objective surface assessment. The result is a solution that makes it easy to compare surfaces exposed to simulated damage and wear—unlocking faster decisions, new development and quality control.

The project “Skadescan – Damage Assessment of Surfaces Using Scanning” aims to develop equipment that combines multiple sensors to measure and evaluate surface properties exposed to simulated wear or vandalism. The goal is to enable relative comparisons between materials, surface treatments, and different cleaning or repair methods.

To reduce the extraction of natural resources and the amount of waste, the reuse of building structures needs to increase. This extends the lifespan of materials and contributes to long-term carbon storage. At the same time, questions arise regarding the functionality and quality of reused components. Damage not only affects appearance but can also cause problems such as water penetration into underlying layers. Vandalism, such as graffiti, scratches from hard objects, and burn marks, further shortens the aesthetic lifespan.

There is a need for methods and equipment that can evaluate and compare the effectiveness of treatments, as several factors influence the outcome: material type, surface treatment, graffiti protection, aging, and cleaning methods. By testing and comparing different treatments on smaller surfaces under accelerated conditions, the project can provide decision support for procurement and purchasing. These comparisons can also determine when a surface is considered restored and what actions are required to achieve this.
