Malmö Energy Lab: Collaboration for a More Resilient Energy System

Malmö Energy Lab explores a more resilient energy system by analysing stakeholder collaboration in the future energy system. The project brings together new and existing technologies to examine the potential roles of flexible energy use, smart energy storage, and on-site electricity generation in supporting a reliable and sustainable energy system.

Malmö Energy Lab demonstrates energy storage and flexibility solutions aimed at creating a more resilient energy system. While individual industries have traditionally invested in technical solutions to strengthen their own operations, Malmö Energy Lab takes a broader systems perspective, exploring how these solutions can interact and work together to enhance the resilience of the energy system as a whole.

The purpose of Malmö Energy Lab is to ensure resilient industrial production based on a sustainable energy system in Malmö through collaboration between industry, public organisations, and energy system stakeholders. The project is developing a system demonstrator guided by the mission: “A resilient industry contributing to a sustainable energy system in Malmö.”

The project partners will demonstrate four different technical solutions:

  1. Backup power and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems
  2. Industrial battery storage solutions for resilience and energy system benefits
  3. Increased electricity and district heating generation through a quench boiler
  4. Conversion of waste gases and waste heat into electricity using Stirling engine technology

To better understand the impact of these technical solutions on the energy system, RISE is developing a digital system dynamics model. Using the model, the project will demonstrate how the solutions influence the wider energy system and how they can help mitigate the effects of disruptions, strengthening the resilience of Malmö’s energy system.
