How additive manufacturing transformed Nordholms

In the spring of 2023, Nordholms on the Swedish westcoast, hesitantly opened their eyes to the potential benefits of additive manufacturing. A speedy implementation came to completely revolutionize their production. What happened?

Nordholms Industriinstallationer is a comprehensive supplier in the industrial machinery and equipment industry, specializing in welded industrial components and process modules. Over the years, they have delivered customized modules, pipe installations, and pipe details to customers in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food, and nuclear power industries. Additive manufacturing, or 3D printing as it is commonly known, was not on their radar until they one day were invited to participate in the RISE-coordinated project, 3D-Action

"I have to admit that I wasn't very interested when I first heard about the project. However, thanks to the enthusiasm and inspiration from IUC Väst, I was convinced to give it a chance. The project included plans for five training days, the first one being a visit to RISE. There, I saw the potential of 3D printing," says Anders Hygrell, co-owner of the family business Nordholms.

The first encounter with additive manufacturing made a significant impression on Anders Hygrell.

"I was convinced that it was something we needed to incorporate into our business, and ordered our first 3D printer the following day. The decision proved to be a sound investment that since has enabled numerous innovative solutions."

Increased ability to tailor solutions

Nordholms' venture into additive manufacturing stemmed from their need to manufacture prototypes and industrial components in a more flexible and efficient manner. The technology has enabled the creation of smart and innovative product supports and aids that facilitate the manufacturing process. Their enhanced ability to customize solutions has given them a competitive advantage in a rapidly changing manufacturing industry.

"We continue to expand our capacity and have invested in several 3D printers. We constantly strive to explore new materials and techniques to offer our customers even more diverse and tailored solutions," says Anders Hygrell.

He actively encourages the staff to explore and experiment freely, creating a creative and stimulating atmosphere that nurtures new ideas. To Nordholms, the implementation of additive manufacturing has been a success story, and Anders Hygrell sees no reason why other small and medium-sized enterprises should hesitate to embark on the same journey.

"All you need is a CAD program and someone with ideas. Then you should be aware that inaccuracies and less successful prints will occur. By trying different things and learning from your mistakes you get the opportunity to evolve and find the best solutions," he says.

He recons the participation in 3D-Action has been beneficial.

"The collaboration with IUC Väst and RISE has been invaluable to us. It has given us an insight into different technologies and techniques; their advantages and limitations. We have also been able to try different materials and filaments, which has broadened our knowledge and facilitated new innovations."

About 3D-Action

The 3D-Action project (active from 2021 to 2023) was run by RISE in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborgs Tekniska College, IDC West, IUC Sweden, IUC Sjuhärad and IUC Väst. Its primary objective was to raise awareness and knowledge about additive manufacturing and its benefits for small and medium-sized companies in the Västra Götaland region. 3D-Action was funded by the European Regional Development Fund, and the Västra Götaland region (VGR).

Based on the experiences from 3D-Action, RISE and partners launched the project 3D-Action 2.0 in January 2024. Are you looking to expand your knowledge of 3D printing, or in need of assistance transitioning to additive manufacturing? Learn more about the project here.
