Learn about the results of the COFFEE and EDOT research projects, which have explored lithium-ion battery safety, focusing on the early detection of thermal runaway and fire suppression.
Welcome to the joint final webinar for the RISE-coordinated research projects COFFEE (Carbon Dioxide Fire Fighting Experimental Evaluation) and EDOT (Early Detection of Thermal Runaway). During the webinar, the researchers will present findings from laboratory tests, full-scale fire tests, simulations and literature reviews that have advanced our understanding of the early detection of thermal runaway and effective fire suppression in vehicles equipped with lithium-ion batteries.

COFFEE (Carbon Dioxide Fire Fighting Experimental Evaluation) has investigated fire suppression strategies for lithium-ion battery fires in maritime environments, with the aim of improving the safety of battery-powered vehicle transport by sea.
The project combined literature studies, experiments and multi-physics simulations. Funders were the Swedish Transport Agency and the Swedish Maritime Foundation.

EDOT (Early Detection of Thermal Runaway) has explored methods for detecting the early stages of thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries, with a particular focus on gas sensing and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).
The project aims to improve understanding of the indicators that can signal a developing thermal runaway event and support preventive action. The project was financed by UL Research Institutes.
